Hypothryoidism TOO!-New member SAHM-I HAVe Lost over 70#'s

I am 34 years old and have had a thyroid problem for 9 years! I am currently taking meds-Levoxyl 137mcg daily. I had my right side of my thyroid removed in December 2003. I joined a local WW group in March of 2003 and have been able to lose over 70 pounds. It is a daily struggle to maintain current weight through exercising, making better food choices, and to be a Mom! I would love to buddy up with anyone who needs support. Thryoid disorders do make it harder to lose & maintain our weight but as a support group we CAN DO IT TOGETHER! : :dizzy:

HIGHEST WEIGHT-193
LOWEST WEIGHT-113 just before my surgery!
CURRENT WEIGHT-125- I have gained back MORE MUSCLE-alot healthier and stronger NOW!!!

Welcome KelliM!
I would love a buddy to lose weight with.I am on my way to being Hypo...was Hyper but had the Radioactive Iodine treatment almost a month ago...just waiting for that Tyroid gland to die already! I am worried about becoming hypo...I have been trying to lose weight since giving birth to my son 10 months ago. Ive gone from 229 (at delivery) down to about 170 now. Have 30 pounds more to go. I am starting South Beach today...we'll see how that goes!

I think the new WW No Count plan will be great for thyroid. I lost 200 pounds basically eating like that.

I had one side of the thyroid gland removed when I was 12 years old, and the second lobe when I was 23 (had growths on them). I'm now 51 and have lost 75 lbs. in the past 1.75 years with the help of Weight Watchers. It's pretty slow going given my age, but I'm sticking with it.

It's interesting to note that the older I got the less thyroid medication I'm taking. Also, for you younger women, please talk to your doctors about bone loss. I believe there is a correlation between bone loss and too much thyroid medication. My sister also takes thyroid medication and her doctor recently lowered the dosage because of the bone loss problem. Although I have no risk factors for it (plus I take calcium) and certainly wasn't expecting it, my bone scan showed loss in the spine. Since I still want to lose 20+ pounds, I'm waiting to see my doctor about lowering the levoxyl dosage to protect my bones.

Susan...Weight Watchers has a no count plan? Do you know much about it? Is this different from the flex points? I did weight watchers about 3 years ago and was successful on the points program (the one right before flex points). I've thought about rejoining...

Sheila...thanks for the info on bone loss. I am not currently on any medications but I know my endo will be writing me a script on Sept. 9th when I go back for a recheck blood test.

congrats to you both on the weight loss!
Heidi

The No Count, or I guess the real name is Core Plan, just started this week. Basically there is a huge list of core foods you can eat until you are satisfied, a couple with limits of once a day (cereal must be with milk), and potato/rice/pasta and you have 35 flex points to use for things that aren't on core - like eating out. It's pretty much on track with my nutritionist recommendations for me and I feel like areal person without having to figure points. There's a lot of info on prevention.com and weightwatchers.com. Be careful of the bootlegg food lists because they have a lot of inaccuracies in them.
