hi niki,
I also tend to suffer from IBS on and off. What I found helpful was to keep a food diary of what I ate, when and how I felt (as nerves, stress etc can trigger the IBS) This was a bit tedious at first but after a couple of weeks it was possible to establish a pattern of what type of food triggered the IBS.

I have also found Dr Weil's community message boards very helpful www.drweil.com (excellent advice)

All the best in your quest to find the solution.

Wink Hi Niki

I have suffered from IBS for many years. Some of the foods that I noticed cause a flare up are dairy products, corn, rice, and very spicy foods and sauces. But I think it varies with each individual. When I feel the pain coming on, like I did this morning, I take 3 extra strength tylenol and also use an enema (sorry to be graphic here!) for the constipation that precedes an attack. It has helped me to do this for years. Before I used to end up sitting in emergency rooms for hours and then they would find nothing and give me something like tylenol anyway. I went to a doctor about it once and he gave me an antispasmotic prescription. I am looking for a new doctor to go to for this reason and several others but haven't had luck getting in to one recently.

I think it's a good idea to see an MD about it, too.

Dear Nikki - I had IBS that was terribly exacerbated by radiation and chemo 3 years ago. I take a Colpermin capsule 1/2 to 1 hour before breakfast. It is mint and is available here in Mexico and in Europe, I believe, but not in the U.S. At night before I go to bed I take Nature's Life Peppermint Z Intestinal Aid. This is available in the States from health food stores or internet sites. These capsules sooth the digestive lining. You may need to start by taking one capsule before each meal. It's necessary to experiment.

It all works so well that I actually can drink 1-2 cups of coffee in the morning! I add something called Coffee Tamer to the coffee which dissipates the coffee acids. It is available on-line from Tamer.com

I wish you well. It's hard enough to lose weight without all the food restrictions. Unfortunately, the foods that are good for a diet such as fiber, whole wheat, uncooked vegetables, etc. are hard to digest so I must limit my eating of them.

Angry It's tough!

Hi Niki,

I also have IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) and am fighting weight loss. I went through every test before I was diagnosed with IBS. I finally saw a Naturopathic Doctor and she helped me get my life back. My IBS was a result of having Candida (it's like excess yeast in the bowels which in turns affects it functioning ability). This was my reason at least. I now have a normal life and can eat pretty much anything I want. Every once in a while it may creep back but I get back on track and watch what I eat (sugar, yeast, etc) , and it clears up quite quickly. When I was first treating it, it took a while to clear up. I have been on Weight Watchers forever and am on it for life. It really is a lifestyle change, not a diet. I have 10-15 more lbs to lose before I hit goal, and I fight it everyday, well, almost!
Don't lose hope! You are not alone!

Good luck with everything,

In For Life
