Paleolithic diet

  • I was wondering if anyone knew anything about the paleolithic diet,or caveman diet?
I really need to lose weight, but becasue i have SLE i can have a flareup from reactions to chemicals in my food or even because of gluten or dairy. Therefore i cant eat chemicly engineered low-fat and low-cal foods without risking a flareup.

After much research,i came across the paleo-diet,which incorporates lots of fatty fish, for the anti-inflammatory omega acids, berries, nuts, veggies and wild game. The wild game is reccomended unless you can get fresh beef, turkey, etc. from a local farmer that hasnt stuffed hormones into his/her cows.
you also cant eat things that have to processed to be eaten, for example if you went out and picked a cashew and ate it,youd get really sick or die, theyre poisonous.

While this diet sounds really good for trying to keep someone with Lupus off of steroids, does anyone know if it would help in weight loss?

here are some recipes if anyone is interested

  • basically, any diet where you are eating foods high in fiber, low in calories and fat will let you lose weight.

i remember reading about this diet in a magazine, and i think they gave it a good score. i honestly don't see how it could really hurt you if you are getting enough calories in to power your body.

if you have lots of food allergies and such, there are lots of cookbooks around for specific problems, so you might be able to find good recipes for yummy foods. health food stores like whole foods are also nice.

you might also want to consider working with a nutritionist; a few of my friends have gone that route and really enjoyed the help.
  • Zao,

You might also look into a local health food store to see if they carry organic meats and such. Some of their products can be a bit expensive, but they usually carry certified organic products which should not have those offensive chemicals and hormones usually added to foods.

It sounds as though this diet might be a version of a low carb diet. If so, ther is a low carb forum at this site you might like to check out.

Good luck. Sounds as though you have a really difficult problem to struggle with. I hope your struggle is successful.

I also am on a diet to help control an autoimmune disorder. I am using the Eat Right 4 Your Type diet but it is very similar to the diet you described. I have lost 50 pounds since starting the diet in Dec. I don't count calories, pts or anything. I just eat the foods recommended for my Blood Type (A) which is primarily vegetarian. I also eat a lot of salmon. It is also a gluten free diet.
Since starting the diet I have lowered my blood sugar to normal, my cholesterol to normal and avoided having to use prednisone for my autoimmune disorder (ITP).
