Default Improved My A1C

I just got my newest labwork back since it was done a year ago. At that time my fast blood glucose was 84 which was fine, but my A1C was 5.9% which was not fine. I was just retested and my blood glucose was 79 and my A1C was 5.44%. My triglycerides had been OK at 104 before, but are now 69.

I had already lost almost 50 pounds at that time and was exercising. Since then I bought a meter and started testing my blood sugar after eating. If something spiked me above 140 I wouldn't eat it again or would modify it so it didn't go so high (eat a smaller portion, change some of the ingredients). There were some foods I just eliminated entirely. When a Cinnamon Crunch bagel spiked me to about 170, I haven't had one since.

Other foods, I could maybe eat if it was the only carbs at the meal or if I ate a smaller portion or changed it slightly.

Overall, I found that I could usually eat a 1/2 serving of brown rice, or a whole wheat tortilla (small). But, even whole wheat pasta tended to be problematical. I had a frozen dinner the other day with whole wheat pasta and only about 35g of carbs but it spiked my blood sugar really high. There are other meals with higher carbs that don't bother me.

I don't try to stick to any particular carb level in a day, but average about 100g (net carbs are about 70g). For me, it is more a matter of what carbs I eat and how much.

I am still insulin resistant. Certain foods will still spike my blood sugar. It is just that through testing what I eat I know what foods will do that and just don't eat them or modify how I eat them so it isn't a problem.

Congratulations Koshka! You have done a great job, not only with weight loss, but with blood sugar control also. You are a good example that this can be done with healthy eating, not some fad diet. I took a look at your blog and intend to go back and read more. It inspires me!
