I have settled in with the new med. With my eating plan, which is between 1000-1200 calories per day, my numbers are forming a pattern. They are still too high (fbs 142) but way lower than the 200s I'd been having. I think weight loss will bring it down lower and eventually I can stop taking it. That is my plan. I exercised gently yesterday for 25 min and did not experience a dangerous drop. I exercise about an hour after I eat. Long enough not to get indigestion, but short enough that my BS is rising from my meal, to avoid a low. Shannon - You are getting the hang of it. Luckily you are Prediabetic and small changes will really help in the long run. We want to continue to get this type of good news from you! I wish I had been given the opportunity to do this before I became full blown diatetic. Trish - According to Fitday, I am consuming about 30 gm carb per day. It's actually hidden carb because I am still not eating any bread, pasta, rice, potatoes or sweets. Except the night before last I ate lasagne. It was planned. My husband wanted it for dinner and I wanted to see how this new med would react with a carby meal. But I was able to go right back to low carb and not binge. I have not lost anymore weight after that 6 lb drop, but I have also not gained. My fiber has dropped considerably and I am seeing signs of that. I have cut out my high fiber crackers because of the carbs, and I have not had any beans all week. I use canned beans. I rinse and drain them then refrigerate, but they seem to go bad before I can eat them all. I'm thinking of freezing them in 1/2 cup portions because they will defrost quickly when I want them. It is normal to be craving carbs. Your body is used to having them and needs to adjust. In a few more days, the cravings will subside. I get them a bit after I finish a meal. It's as if my body feels that it needs that slice of bread. After a while it goes away. Here's hoping we all reach goal before long. I intend to reach goal, but I haven't decided what "goal" is. I'll know it when I get there. |
Happy April Fool's Day! We told my daughter there was snow on the ground and that her hair had turned green, lol!
Yes, I hope to keep having good news!! I thought I would share the breakfast that has been helping me start off my day.....boil in the bag omelettes! I have been making these daily for about a week. I like variety at dinner but do better with routine the rest of the day. Ok, so this does take extra time in waiting but I use that time to clean up my kitchen or empty the dishwasher or whatever (I stay at home with my daughter). Boil a large pot of water (fill about halfway). Lightly beat 2-3 eggs, mix in a small amount of whatever you want in it (shredded cheese, cooked sausage or bacon, diced ham, veggies), I like to add a dallop of sour cream or milk, add your preferred seaonings (I like salt, pepper and garlic powder). Mix well and add mixture to a quart size freezer bag. Seal and put into boiling water (if multiple bags, use sharpie to put initials/names on baggies). Boil 13 min. Remove baggie, open and omelette will slide out onto plate. Enjoy! |
I got this from Prevention.com and thought I would share it. I thought it was good to know this because people still think low carb is bad for you.
Study Shows: Atkins Diet Lowers Risk Of Heart Disease The Atkins and other low-carb diets have been the subject of various studies and considerable ongoing research. Johns Hopkins researchers have found that overweight and obese people who go on the Atkins Diet reduced inflammation throughout their body. This inflammation is a trigger for heart disease so its reduction also diminishes the risk for the disease. Study results have been presented to the American Heart Association. The Atkins diet has actually been around for some time. The nutritionist Robert Atkins who launched this weight loss plan actually began adhering to the diet himself as far back as 1965. His diet was published in Vogue in 1970 and began to grow in popularity from there. What followed were best-selling books and, today, even grocery store items. Of course, controversy has also accompanied the diet. Many have claimed that it is not a healthy diet in spite of its ability to achieve significant weight loss. Since the controversy, however, many studies have been conducted in order to determine if there are truly benefits associated with the Atkins Diet. While the Johns Hopkins study made headlines, there have been others. An earlier study published by theNew England Journal of Medicine found that following the Atkins diet during a two-year period led to a greater reduction in triglycerides and bad cholesterol levels than other diets such as the Mediterranean diet. Participants also experienced lower blood pressure and, of course, lost weight. In fact, the Atkins is regarded as one of the better plans for losing abdominal weight. Losing waist circumference is a major facet of the Atkins plan. Waist that is larger than 35 inches around can easily be associated with a greater risk for heart disease. A diet like Atkins which is known for reducing waist size can reduce these risks. Obesity itself is a factor linked to heart disease as well as other conditions like diabetes and stroke. The Atkins Diet is regarded as a viable way to effectively manage weight and enhance one’s health. While many people have heard of this popular diet, not everyone may be familiar with its basic tenets. The Atkins Diet calls for a reduction of carbohydrates. In fact, many of today’s popular low-carb diets have been influenced by the success of the Atkins Diet. Though dieters will significantly limit their carbohydrates, they will increase their protein intake. This protein-rich plan is particularly strict during the initial phase of the diet. Early on, carb intake is essentially associated with a salad and some low-starch vegetables. The diet calls for a stop on processed foods containing carbs and refined sugars. Anyone contemplating beginning the Atkins diet should understand that there are four phases associated with this weight loss plan. The first introductory phase, according to most participants, is regarded as the most difficult as the reduction of carbs tend to be a major departure from the way most people eat. The second phase involves ongoing weight loss, while the third phase is known as pre-maintenance, and the last phase is simply maintenance. Is the Atkins Diet right for everyone? If one goes by the studies, anyone who is obese, overweight, and has a large waistline can benefit by the weight loss associated with strict adherence to the Atkins Diet. By reducing weight, dieters also reduce their risk factors for heart disease and other serious health conditions like diabetes. Losing abdominal weight can be difficult for many dieters, too, but the Atkins plan is known for its ability to shrink waistlines. Dieters contemplating changing their lifestyle and diet should discuss their plans with their healthcare provider. Once you are sure about beginning this diet, it’s a good idea to find out more about it in detail. Books about the Atkins Diet are available and there is also a website to find out more information about eating. Get to understand what foods are off limits and what foods are alright to eat in great quantity. Dieters may have to revamp their pantries and learn new ways of cooking healthy using Atkins-friendly ingredients. Those serious about following the plan have weight loss to look forward to and, if these studies are correct, some health benefits too! |
Rennie Thanks for starting our April Chat. I used to exercise when I first got up, but since my recumbent bike is in the bedroom and DH is a day sleeper, I can't do it early like that any more. I can't move it into the living room because he has his regular stationary bike in here so not room for both. I actually starting riding mine after lunch because I read in the Reverse Diabetes book (not Prevention) that it was better for diabetics to exercise after we eat. Of course, he didn't say how long we should wait. DH thinks I should exercise before I eat. I read somewhere else that you should wait 2 hrs after, so I may try Carol Sue's waiting an hour and exercise and see how I do with that. However, I don't plan to do any exercise today other than regular moving around.
Shannon You are doing so good and just think of what a good example you are to your precious little one. I'm 70 yrs old and I often feel that I owe it to my grown children a good example of eating right. As I learn new healthy eating ways, I share it with them hoping they can see that the fact I never gave up will be encouraging to them. You can be so proud of yourself. :) Carol Sue I rejoined Prevention.com website. So glad you reminded me of that when you shared from it. They are so good and helpful. I read on there today about indigestion and some of the foods it say eat seem to be my problem right now, but I know they are things I will add back into my diet as I progress. I was so ill during the night. I was feeling pretty good and as soon as I laid down, it hit me. I had to come and sit almost upright in my recliner to let my tummy get settled. The problem with that is that my DH comes alive about midnight and here I'm not feeling well and he want to talk to me. I was reading on-line and in some of his medical books to see what to do. He has an emergency diagnosis book and he was questioning me "do you feel this" "No. "What about this"? I really don't think it is gerd as I don't have all the symptoms. I ate 6 small meals yesterday, but I just made myself eat them to reach the calories etc. I honestly felt like I had overloaded my stomach. Today I read on Prevention.com that protein makes you feel full longer because it takes it longer to digest... even up to 24 hrs. So I am even more convinced that is what I did. I overloaded. So I am going to continue the Atkins Induction, but I am going to eat ONLY WHEN I AM HUNGRY and eat only as much as I need to be satisfied. I am not going to worry too much about calories, because I know that I would not go over 1600 calories in a day if I do that. I will keep a count of the carbs to keep them down around 20 g for a while and then after a week or two I will start adding carbs 5 g a week to see how many I can eat and still lose weight. I am not going to even worry about the fiber as I think that by choosing the right carbs that will also take care of itself. I think left to the combination of Atkins and Intuitive Eating that the weight and the digestive problems will take care of themselves. So far today, I had the 1/2 avocado and 1 egg cooked in my Stove Wave in the microwave. Thanks Carol Sue for sharing that with me. My plan is to have that steak for lunch that I didn't eat yesterday and then take the rest of the day as it comes and decide what I'll eat when I get hungry. If I eat 6 small meals, but it may just be 3 or 4 small ones. No real rules at this time except the Intuitive Rules of when I'm hungry, eat what I really want and eat only as much as it takes to satisfy my hunger and no more. I might check out Fitday. I notice a lot of 3fchickies use it. I almost decided to go ahead and just eat fiber and not worry about Atkins, but then 2 things happened. My weight was up again 1 lb so I had gained a lb on high fiber and I gained a lb switching to Atkins. That didn't bother since I do that when switching diets. But I was thrilled to see my FBS at 121 today the lowest it has been in 6 or 7 yrs. It got that low only one time before when I was doing Atkins. Then I read the article I posted on here from Prevention about Atkins. That sold me. It shows me what works and that it is safe and that I had just overloaded my stomach yesterday trying to reach a minimum of 1200 calories when I wasn't hungry. Personally I stay up and get up too late to eat so many small meals. So I now know how I have to eat to control the fbs so I'm going with it. Sorry this so long. I'm still not up to par so may have repeated myself. If so, I do apologize. I believe we are all going to find our way and make it to our goals. Like Carol Sue, I'm not sure what my final goal will be. I have people even DH say I would look good at 150 so I made that my goal, but will decide when I get there what I want to do from there. Have nice day Chickies. |
Carol Sue I am so not looking forward to that. I listen to the boys that wear men size clothes tell me about what they WANT on a regular basis. It's interesting to hear them say when I get a job I'm gonna buy this this and this. Well little do they know and their older sister can tell them money flows through your pockets/fingers quickly if you are not careful and you will have nothing to get you through the week before you blink. Good for you on your fbs being in the 140's :high: and eating no pasta, potatoes, bread or sweets will definitely help you cut weight. That's how I lost the 10lbs in January but February and March weren't that easy. I think my body adjusted ;) I haven't decided what "goal" is. I'll know it when I get there. <--- this is me, I have numbers set in place but I do suspect I will know truly when I get there :)
Shannon, I like the idea of boil in a bag. I tried the microwave omelet and it makes it taste and look fake. I may give that a shot, I don't buy freezer bags so I'll have to get those also :) Trish great job on your fbs being in the 120's :high: We didn't make it to the gym today not sure why but ok. :) My husband was making pancakes for himself which is what he typically does before the gym since they are so heavy. They smelled so good so I decided I would look up protein pancakes. I used bits and pieces from 7 different recipes according to what I had in here and came up with this ... Makes 3 -- 4.5 inch pancakes Calories 99, carbs 8, protein 12, sodium 204, fiber 1 <- in each one, I didn't think that was too bad other than the sodium 1 tbsp WildRoots flaxseed meal 1/8 cup Betty Crocker rice flour blend 1 egg 1 scoop vanilla protein powder ¼ tsp cinnamon 1/8 tsp baking powder <-- probably didn't need since I had the rice flour ½ cup of water I only ate one with sohgave low glycemic syrup which is 60 calories |
Rennie, definitely get the freezer ones, they are thicker and can withstand the heat. Here is a pancake recipe I've had success with (low carb, not high protein, might not fit what you are looking for)
http://alldayidreamaboutfood.com/201...uten-free.html |
Shannon sounds good and looks good also. There are 6 grams of protein in a serving of her pancakes. Thank you for sharing this site with me :) I like a few of the recipes on that site. How much does coconut flour and almond flour cost? I priced one of them made by Bob's Red Mill and it was almost $10 so I left it at the store.
I'm having a snacky evening, not good at all :( |
Shannon Thanks for the boil in bag omelet recipe and the low carb recipe site. I've never seen coconut flour, but will have to check it out when I can add it back into my plan.
Rennie Thanks for your recipe too. I am reading The New Atkins for a New You book again. Haven't gotten very far because I am mostly relaxing and taking it easy today giving my tummy time to heal. I was pleased to see in the new book that they recommend 4 or 5 small meals, but they also have a few rules that sound more like Intuitive Eating because they suggest eating only when you are hungry and eat as much as it takes to satisfy you. However, they do recommend that you not go more than 5 or 6 hrs without eating something. This is good for me because when I did IE there were days that I could eat as soon as I got up and maybe eat up to 5 meals, however, there were a lot of times that I just didn't get hungry. It will be nice to be on a plan that allows me to go longer without food. I really believe when my tummy is better that I'm going to really enjoy doing this. |
I saved both of these pancake recipes but I don't know if I'll ever actually make them. I don't usually buy unusual ingredients such as Flaxseed meal or Rice Flour. Also, I have erased the thought of carby foods from my mind for the moment and don't want to temp fate by trying even low carb versions. I'm afraid it will just make me crave the real thing. You know what they say, "If it's not broke, don't fix it." I am absolutely amazed that I have done this for this long. It is so not me, but long overdue.
I feel absolutely wonderful today. I have been very sniffly with seasonal allergies so I took a Benadryl at bedtime and I slept like a dead man. I had so much energy today! I think it's a combination of my glucose dropping and the low carb diet. I exercised for 35 min at a higher intensity than usual, and I did intervals. I sure hope this continues. I feel like I'm 40! I exercise while I'm watching my soaps, so that's after lunch, which is usually light. Today I had kale and spinach with sauteed mushrooms, onions and garlic. Topped with some feta cheese and black beans. Yummy Yummy! Before dinner my bs was 132, but I just checked it and it's at 99. So the exercise has helped bring it down. Rennie, although I would like to be slim and svelt, my weight loss goals have more to do with health than looks. That ship has sailed! LOL If I could comfortably fit into my clothes that are too tight I will be more than happy. My goal is to be at whatever weight allows me to have good BP and BG without meds. I wouldn't care if I had to continue to use Metformin because I have no side effects from it, and it is known to have health benefits. Trish - I sure hope your tummy settles down soon. Is it pain, or just an upset stomach? I agree that you should not try to reach 1200 calories if it makes you feel stuffed. Many people on low carb are eating lower calories than normal because the protein makes you feel full longer. And right now I wouldn't worry about fiber until you are feeling better. I think low carb is going to work well for you when you finally get your stomach issues taken care of. Worry about that first. When I first started this my calories were around 1000 but recently they have gone up into the 1200 range. I don't know if that's why I haven't lost any more or not, but I will be patient. If I don't lose more by the end of the week I will look into cutting back. I am only eating eggs, fish, meat, and veggies for the most part, but maybe I'm eating too many protein calories. That's the only place it could be because there's not many calories in veggies. My husband makes himself 2 pieces of french toast for breakfast. It sure looks good! Then he scrambles the leftover eggs for me. If I make my own breakfast I use egg substitute. I think that's funny that you and DH use different bikes. My husband uses my treadmill and weights but won't use the elliptical. My 5 year old grandson loves the elliptical. He looks so cute using it. Last time he fell off, but I'll bet he gets right back on it again. Shannon, I think I'm too cheap to buy freezer bags. LOL Social Security doesn't allow much money for fancy extras. |
Trish I am good for eating one meal a day maybe two. When I did the Jorge Cruise diet that's when I started eating more on a regular basis, not I think I do more IE and have been for some time. I just didn't know what it was called :)
Carol Sue, I'm not wanting to be slim or svelte either :). Just comfortable in my own skin and healthy (I still have school aged children to raise) and getting off of diabetic meds is definitely a plus. I started buying flaxseed meal a few years back. I was buying Bob's Red Mill but it's grainy so the WildRoots brand is much more like flour and I can deal with the texture better. I was looking into gluten free that's how I ended up with the rice flour blend. It's been in the pantry for a good while now. I buy things and then forget about them, bad habit I have :) |
Rennie When I was growing up I only ate breakfast on special occasions or when traveling. I only ate lunch and dinner. Once in a while when dating, I would have a cold drink. I hated going out to eat on a date because I wasn't hungry and would actually get sick to my stomach sometimes when I went out to eat on a date. I never had a weight problem until I was made to believe that I HAD TO eat 3 meals a day. I always say I had to learn to gain weight by eating the way people told me WAS HEALTHIER for me. Then I had to hear them fuss because I gained weight and they were always looking for a diet for me to eat less so I could lose weight. DH #2's grandmother was always sending me ads about a NEW diet she saw. Before I married DH #2, I lived alone and was losing weight like crazy because I only ate 1 meal a day and then once in a great while I would have a small snack which usually meant a bite of something... not really even big enough to actually qualify as a snack.

Today I was at a playdate and another mom offered me a twizzler and I ate it before I even thought about what it was....oops! In the South we often do things to be pleasant (like accepting a gift of food) just out of habit so I'm not beating myself up. I'm one of those people who can completely give up on a diet (or other habit change) just because I had one bad day....I often expect perfection and if I don't achieve it, just give up to avoid disappointment. I'm trying to change that mentality and see these changes as long term vs "need to lose weight right now" and give myself more grace when I slip up so I don't fall into giving up. I'm also really happy my cravings for junk food (chips, ice cream, candy) seem to have gone into hiding. Since I have binge eating disorder I can't imagine they will stay in hiding for too long but it's been nice. Tomorrow I am heading out of town after lunch to take my daughter to visit my mom. This will be a real test of my self control. My mom and I disagree quite significantly on diet. We are polar opposites particularly in regards to meat/fat. That would be fine except my mom cannot have a conversation without bringing up the topic of food and how her way of eating is "right" and anyone else's is wrong. This happens no matter the subject of conversation but we will eat several times while I'm there so it's inevitable that this will occur. Usually when this happens it burns me up so bad I turn to food out of frustration. I'd like to not go off plan even if I turn to food so I will pack several snacks, lol. I love my mom but I dread spending time with her bc we always end up in some irritating discussion about diet. This has gone on my entire life. She did recently lose about 30 lbs (she was just barely on the high end to start with) so it has been worse lately. |
Shannon you are good, I am not good at prepping food, plus there are so many of us there is definitely no need to separate anything. I shop at Aldi also :) Love that store :)

I just couldn't wait to share with y'all my results of just 2 days on Atkins Induction. I have a new low weight of 225.4 and a new low fbs of 113 mg. I am so very excited about how this is working. :carrot:
I know this is probably water weight, but I didn't do this good with fluid pills. And one of the reasons that I never stayed with Atkins in the past is that it ha never worked this good for me in the past. I will continue what I am doing the rest of the week and I just might do the second to see how good I can do in the two weeks. This has become an exciting challenge for me which is just the motivation that I needed. They say you can (not will) lose 15 lbs in the 2 week Induction. I don't really care whether I lose the 15 lb, I'm just curious as to how good this will work if I do it "by the book". :) And my tummy is almot back to normal. Carol Sue You are doing good. I heard of someone who eats this way and allows themselves what they now call "cheat" days. We can really do this. He chickies we all have found what works for us and we can and will do this. Rennie, Shannon, Ruthie and Fatmad and lurkers  |
Great job Trish!!
|
Trish that's great :yay: for you ... Keep up the good work :high:
Shannon  I had another up of .4 to 163.6 ... my fault for sure just water (sodium from eating bacon last night :D). Got to the gym though did 3.81 miles and burned 473 calories feeling good :) |
Approximately 3 hrs after I ate, I checked bs and it was 110 mg. Atkins is definitely the way to eat for me. This is absolutely fantastic. Doc had told me that when I got the fbs #s right then we would work on the post meal readings. With Atkins way of eating, I won't have to worry about that as it will automatically be correcte.
I had 2 eggs this morning with 1/2 avocado and 3 grape tomatoes and 2 sl bacon. Lunch was 1 cod fish fillet, a small salad with mayo and 1/2 c asparagus. Not sure what I will have later as tonight is Bible study at 7 pm so may just have a couple slices of deli turkey breast and a sl of cheese. I tear the cheese in half and wrap a slice of turkey breast around each half. Have to go by Walmart a few blocks up from the church before coming home so I may have 2 eggs scrambled in coconut oil when I get home. However, I am allowed some Atkins food on Induction and may pick something up. An Atkins shake sure sounds good for something quick without a lot of fuss. Any way just wanted to share how good this is working for me. Carol Sue How are you doing today? Rennie .4 up isn't too bad. Water should help get rid of it really quick. Shannon I am so proud of you for doing this at your age. You are so smart. OK, I got to go get dressed. Catch y'all later. |
Trish I am so glad your tummy is starting to feel better, and I'm excited about your loss and FBG! I think most diets will give you fluid loss first, but a loss is a loss in my book. You are doing great!
I heard the when you're trying to correct your blood sugar, FBG is the last to go down to normal. So if you are having good FBG then your post-prandial reading will automatically be good, too. Don't take that as gospel. It's just something I heard. Back when my A1c was in the 6 range my FBG was still not good. It was in the 120s. But overall, my average was good enough to give me a good A1c. My doc is pleased as long as I stay under 7. I was up 1 lb this morning. The only thing I can say is that I didn't get weighed until after breakfast because I forgot. I did eat more than usual yesterday, but it was not carb. I roasted a chicken, and it was so good I did eat a lot. I don't believe in cheat days because I don't consider anything a cheat. This is just my new way of eating. I follow low carb but that doesn't mean I will never eat a carb. They say you are doing good if you follow your eating plan 90 % of the time. I know I cannot go the rest of my life never eating a carb again, but it will be controlled eating, not a binge, and I will go right back to plan. This morning my FBG was 139. Not perfect, but so much better than the 200's I was having. I am still testing out this new med. This morning, I did not take it. I wanted to see how my glucose would be without it. I ate chicken salad for breadfast, (leftover from that delicious roast chicken), a salad with some tuna fish in it for lunch. I tested 3 times thoughout the day and I did not go over 170, even after eating. I thought that was pretty good for not taking the pill. I did take it before dinner though because it's a bigger meal. DH wanted spaghetti. I think it was another of his attempts at sabotage. I made the spaghetti and I ate 6 meatballs with some sauce and some sugar snap peas. There was a lot of pasta left over so it went down the disposal. He didn't mention that I didn't eat it. After 33 years of marriage I got DH to eat spinach today. LOL He will never eat it cooked because he said it looks like seaweed, but he has never eaten the raw leaf spinach either. Today when I was making my salad I was mixing the spinach leaves with iceberg lettuce. I asked him if he wanted a salad and he did, so I just gave him some of the greens from my bowl, spinach and all. He knew it was in there. He said it just tastes like lettuce. He had to live to 71 before eating it. LOL I had another good workout today. 35 minutes. I warmed up and cooled down on the treadmill and did intervals on the elliptical. Doing this, I'm getting my heart rate up higher than I usually do. I get a little scared because I can feel my heart beating harder, but the cardiologist wants me to exercise and he never told me to take it easy. I think if there were any problems I would get shortness of breath, and I'm not getting any. I feel great. I had so much energy I came up and cleaned the dining room and kitchen. Everything is gleaming! Shannon - It's very possible that your cravings will stay gone, even though you have a tendancy to binge. I am, or should I saw, was the same way. In the past when I made pasta I would always cook too much and I would keep eating til it was gone. It was the same with bread. We like to buy Italian or French bread and I would start eating it with tons of butter, and not stop til it was gone. I have not had bread since I got my high A1c results, about 2 weeks ago. I am not craving it at all, but the best thing I can do is stay away from it. I know the day is going to come when a sandwich will be sitting in front of me. I just pray that by that time I will be able to eat it and stop. If you do eat some of your trigger foods, stop after a couple bites. Don't let it turn into a binge. You will be so pleased with yourself! Rennie - Do you get your calories burned from the read-out on the treadmill? Mine has that but I don't pay attention to it. |
Carol Sue Great job ditching the left over pasta down the disposal. I don't like throwing food out but I have done that myself to keep myself from caving. I also like your idea of not having cheat days and the 90% on plan.
I still like Dana Carpendar's idea of once in a while you can have a planned carby meal. I mainly want to use Atkins to get my cravings under control and to get into the habit of eat 90% low carb meals and snacks. I just have to get it working for me 100% of the time however I have to even if it is 90% low carb with leeway to eat something I really want. Tonight at church there is a lady who makes sweets for us to snack on. I have made it a habit to not eat anything. Only because I'm afraid of getting in the habit. I would love to get to the place that I am eating low carb so well, that if I want to taste something I can do it without it derailing me. However, I know that I have a long way to go to get that place. I went over on my carbs today to 26 g instead of 20 g, but from what I read on Atkins.com, I think that is okay if you average out to 20g a day during a one week period. I added a little more veggies today and ate too many tomatoes. I forgot they have more carbs, but I had already eat them. I did eat an Atkins snack bar when I got home. I am curious to see how it affects the fbs. And I will check my bs before I go to bed to see if it raised it. I had 1207 calories, 26 g carbs and 15 g fiber. Sodium is a little high, but hopefully the water will wash it out. Water and tea have become my drink these days. Seem to have lost my desire for coffee. :?: IDK why. Catch y'all tomorrow |
For those of you interested in LC/moderate protein PANCAKES without buying lots of special ingredients...
Look for Maple Grove Farms Sugar Free Pancake mix (near Bob's and GF products in my market) be sure to get SF (inexpensive at $3.99 a box.) I just use the 1/4 cup mix and water (I omit oil and egg without a problem). 80 cals, 5 net carbs/11 g protein. Sometimes I add flaxseed for a little extra. I use Walden Farms syrups (maple or blueberry) which are 0 fat/0 carb/0 sugar products. Makes a GREAT easy low carb, low cal, low fat, moderate protein breakfast item! |
Trish, the first 12-14lbs is supposed to be water but like Carol Sue said a loss is a loss and it does show and make a difference, if for nothing else moral :) It make the heart and mind happy and gives the incentive push to keep on pushing on. You are doing great and keep posting the meals. I copied yesterdays since I need to go grocery shopping :) How do you prepare your asparagus? Trish it's sad, I drink enough water some days to float away others I just get my 4 bottles in which is 67.6 ozs and I still have issues. My wedding ring will slide off my finger if I'm not careful and the scale/water weight still don't cooperate :)
Carol Sue, I like the sound of this --> I heard the when you're trying to correct your blood sugar, FBG is the last to go down to normal. So if you are having good FBG then your post-prandial reading will automatically be good, too. I just have to keep my FBS in check ;) Carol Sue, :high: on not eating the pasta :yay: YOU :) LOL on the spinach and your husband. My husband just ate pumpkin pie this year for the first time. I have made it forever. He said he didn't like it but had never ever tried it. He will now get upset if the kids eat most of it and he has only had one slice so I make two or three so my daughter can take one home :) My son won't eat cooked spinach but he will put a ton of it raw into his smoothies :) Great job on the treadmill :) My heart rate got up to 156 yesterday on the treadmill. I didn't feel bad so I keep going. The higher the incline the higher the heart rate for me. Good for you on the bread. I'm a bread and butter person also. No I get my calories burned from Nike+. There is a censor in my shoe that connects wirelessly to my phone so when I start the treadmill I activate the censor. It took me a while to calibrate it but it's done now so my pace/distance are monitored. Thanks Laurie, I've bought the pancake mix before but was afraid to try the syrup. Is it good? I didn't like the WF salad dressings or the bbq sauce because it had a vinegary taste to me. So just wondering about the syrup. I do like the agave maple syrup though, but it's hard to find. |

When I was younger, I used to get my heart rate into the 140's. I'm almost embarassed to say what it is now, but then I'm a 68 year old heart patient. My resting heart rate is low, around 55, because of my heart meds. I used to exercise with my heart rate in the 80's, but now with the intervals it goes into the 90's. Probably not a lot of calorie burn, but good health benefits, just the same. I still have 2 leaky heart valves but the doc said unless I get shortness of breath, they are ok. I have heard the FBG rule several times, and I think it applies to type2 only. I have been checking my BG 5 times a day for the past 4 days. I have a chart that shows how avg bg compares to A1c. My avg for 4 days is 156. 154 equals an A1c of 7. My average for yesterday was 142, so my avg bg IS going down, slowly. When I had my bloodwork, A1c was 9.7, so I'd say I've made a big improvement and I'm happy with that. I still didn't lose the 1 lb I gained, but I am going to cut back a little on my eating. I think I have been eating more to make sure I don't get a low. I was afraid this new med was going to make me do that, even unconciously. This morning my FBG was 185, up considerably from yesterdays 139. But at bedtime I ate a few of my high fiber crackers to try to get in some fiber and I think that was a mistake. Maybe I should eat them earlier in the day with some other food. The fiber helped in other ways, but I don't think bedtime is the time to eat it. I think the idea of a bedtime snack may be beneficial for others, but not for me. It has never seemed to help anything. Trish, I agree that you should get your low carb diet firmly in place before you start adding a carby meal here and there. As you continue to eat low carb, you might get to the point that those sweets at church really don't interest you. I remember as a kid I loved sweets. It was as an adult that they started to taste sickeningly sweet to me. Sometimes I get the chills just looking at donuts my husband buys. I can handle a bite now and then, especially if I'm baking cookies and want to see how they turned out. But I would never binge on sweets. I have never lost my taste for chocolate though, but I still can't eat a lot of it. I quit keeping it in the house. Occasionally I will buy a single bar at the checkout, but mostly I avoid it. I would like to cut my carbs back little more, but I eat so many veggies. According to Fitday, other things have small amounts of carbs, too, things you wouldn't expect. I average around 30-35 gm per day. I will have to look over the past couple days and see where I can cut about 5 of them. JLUS I might look into the Maple Grove Pancake mix once I feel I can eat a little more carb without any damage. It will be easier for me than buying a lot of different ingredients to make them from scratch. I wonder if you could make waffles from it, too? If so, I could add a little vanilla whey protein to it for more protein. See how easily my mind can be swayed in the direction of carbs? LOL Ruthie? How ya doing? Mad? Where are you hiding? Shannon? Still doing good? Lurkers? Join in! The more the merrier! |
Shannon I just re-read your post from the first or just read it I guess :dizzy: I must have missed it some how. First off glad you didn't let the twizzler through you off. I thing didn't lead to another, great NSV :high: Good for you on the junk food cravings :) On the subject of Mom's. My Mom gave me major praise the last time she was here. Even went a little overboard in my opinion but that what she does about everything. She is super thin and I mean super thin and always has been. She has talked about my weight for years, even laughed at me when she saw me getting dressed once. I was supposed to go up to VA a week ago but changed my mind. She told me I had planned for us to go to Red Lobster for dinner and then to Ihop for breakfast ... I told her you are trying to make me gain every pound I loss back in two days, she just laughed. I don't talk about food or diet with her or health for that matter. She doesn't have a positive attitude about those subjects in my opinion. Hope your visit went well and sorry I missed your post earlier.
Carol Sue, I've had the shoes for 3 years actually bought them because they were the last pair on sale. Last year I was reading something and was saying I needed to get that device since it goes in your sneaker, no thoughts. My son picked up the shoe and said Mom you already have the shoes, so I went to the Apple store and bought the thing to put in the hole that's under the insole of the shoe. Funny huh :) Nike has every type of fitness thing you can think of and it all cost more than I am willing to pay. I even looked on ebay for a new pair of sneakers and I think the least expensive was $90. I'm not paying $90 for a sneaker. So the ones I have are fine :) What kind of high fiber crackers do you have? And good job on your A1c coming down, that's great :) I think a protein or a piece of dark chocolate is good for a quick bedtime snack, only my opinion though. I have had a cheese stick or laughing cow or a dove chocolate in the evening when I just want something :) Laurie, I actually have a box of the pancake mix in the pantry, didn't realize it until I started preparing the grocery list :) and Carol Sue it says Pancake & Waffle mix so yes you can make your waffles :) |
Good Morning Ladies,
My weight and my fbs stayed the same today. So the Atkins bar I ate last night didn't hurt either one. In fact, I checked my bs last night before I went to bed and it was 109 3 hrs after eating it. The bars will be put in my purse for emergencies only. Funny thing is that I could have eaten just a few bites of it and been perfectly satisfied. I did got 1 pkg of 4 Atkins shakes to drink on Sunday morning before I go to church since we always come home an eat breakfast after. I made DH and my fish meal yesterday and just made the statement in passing that "this is a low carb/Atkins meal". While at the store last night, I asked him what he wanted to eat differently today. He wanted shrimp scampi. I make mine with just butter, garlic, onion and parsley flakes. I was excited that he picked something we both could have low carb. Oh BTW his fbs is down to 122 the lat 2 times he checked it. He isn't good at doing everyday checks. I think he sees that I'm really working at it and the results we are getting. His first wife died from loads of complications because of diabetes. He always felt she didin't work hard enough to lose weight and get it under control. One of my promises I made to him before we married was I would work at getting it under control. However, we have learned a lot since she died and one thing we've learned is that the diet they gave her back then causes you to gain weight and doesn't lower bs. Also she had some sort of pancreas disease and we've decided that she may not have been able to do any better than she did. She was the only one of the 3 kids in her family to have the weight problems she had all of her life. It does help to have Tony doing this with me. He didn't ever understand the way I eat on Atkins/low carbing, but now he says major results with the bs and as my doc always says 'the numbers don't lie". Rennie Because my plans change on my food plan during the day because I do this Intuitively, I like to have an idea of what I'm going to eat, but I try to satisfy my hunger and not have to stick to a plan. So let me give you an idea of how I plan my meals. Breakfast - I always have eggs with either bacon or sausage and a slice of cheese &/or some avocado. When my stomach gets back to normal, I will probably use canned tomato and avocado to make sort of a guacamole to make the avocado go farther and just put that on top of my cooked eggs. Lunches - is protein (meat, fist etc), a small salad (about 1.5 to 2 c). I either use mayo with 0 sugar/carbs and a low carb veggie like broccoli, greens of some kind or cabbage or cauliflower. I don't usually eat cauliflower because DH eats a whole package once a day. But doing Atkins, I decided I could make a mock potato salad with it mashed and put in fridge to eat off of during the day and be OP. Dinner - is light because being retired and home all day, our main meal as at lunch. So I have some sort of protein with a low carb veggie. Later at night for snacks I usually eat a lowcarb deli sandwich meat or sausage (I found a Turkey bites in the jerky part of the store and tried them last night. They were good but pricey.) I will look for them at Aldi's next time I go as they would be good for a go bag or to eat on trips when traveling. Sometimes I scramble a couple of eggs for a snack. Just anything that is easy and quick. Sometimes I add what I call a finger salad like radishes, cherry/grape tomatoes, celery or whatever with it. I hope this helps. Carol Sue So glad you are doing good with the meds and experimenting to see how it works for you. I do know that some of this is water, but since I've been losing for 3 months, I don't expect a lot of water loss. I am just thankful that it is going down. I grabbed a couple slices of the turkey meat and a sl of swiss cheese last night before we went to church and I think I can't eat swiss cheese. I felt so bad at church and I was so miserable. I went because a friend was supposed to go who hadn't been to our church but once before and I didn't want her to feel lost. She didn't show up because we don't have a nursery for small groups and she had her grandson. I think I would have stayed home if I had known ahead of time. Once the class was over and I got up and walked around and could belch good, I was fine. So we went to Walmart real quick to get the few things we needed and came home. My craving for sweets, junk has left me. One of the things that I love about low carbing and my ankles were not swollen this morning. Like you Shannon I'm going to enjoy no cravings as long as I can and I hope we can do without them for quite a while. :) Well, I haven't eat breakfast yet and I'm getting hungry so I will go for now and catch you ladies later. Have blessed day. |
Trish what brand of mayonnaise do you buy? That mock potato salad is delicious. I put green pepper, onion, celery, and relish in it. I guess I could boil some eggs and put the egg white in it also. I love egg salad with just the yolks :) Thanks it does. I wrote it down :) Which Atkins bars did you buy? I the peanut butter granola bar, not grainy to me so I can eat it. And the triple chocolate bar pretty good. I signed up for the Atkins something and they sent those to me free to try along with another one but I don't remember the name.

I surely do hope so. I checked my bs 2 hrs after breakfast and it was 119. This is wonderful. I'm wanting to ride the bike but read you shouldn't exercise during the 2 week Induction. I'm thinking as tired as I feel that maybe I shouldn't until my body settles into the new way of burning fat. One of those times I think following the book is probably wise. Thanks for telling me about your mock potato salad with cauliflower. Do you use mustard in yours? That's the way my Mama made regular potato salad. I thought I would try the mock with a mixture of mayo/mustard. Mustard is soooo good for you. |
I went for a haircut this morning and she didn't cut it short enough. I go through that with her all the time. I even went to someone else once and they didn't cut it short enough either. This time I even took a picture with me. I don't know how to get it across to her that I want it short. I think she wants me to come back sooner so she leaves it longer. Grrrrrr
One time some Atkins bars came in the mail addressed to DH. I have no idea why. I know HE never ordered anything Atkins. LOL I didn't like them. I didn't realize that mayo had 0 carbs. I looked at my jar of Hellmans and sure enough! I only use it occasionally. It usually goes bad before we finish it. DH has been eating tuna salad for lunch lately and I've been putting some of it in my tossed salad, but he puts too much mayo in it for me. I make potato salad only about 3 times a year, but for my family, it has to be real potato salad. I tried Aldi's mayo once but we didn't like it. I didn't take my pill again this morning. I told you my FBS was 190. I skip breakfast sometimes if I'm not hungry, like this morning, and when I do eat it, it's usually very small. I don't want to eat a bigger breakfast just to accomodate the meds. After my haircut I came home and made my salad and my BG was down to 131. I put a hard boiled egg in it and some of the tuna salad so I had some protein with it. I will take the pill before dinner though, because that meal is normally enough to handle the pill without giving me a low. Last night 3 hrs after dinner I was at 119, Then I blew it with the crackers. Rennie, I buy Wheat Thins Fiber Select. They are not actually HIGH fiber, but higher than some others. I also have some of those Wasa Light Rye Crisp. The best I can describe them is they are like a styrofoam plate. LOL But for some reason I like them. I spread a very thin film of peanut butter on them. Crackers, including saltines, have always been a downfall for me, similar to bread, and I try to fool myself into thinking I'm eating healthy ones. I saw a recipe that called for those Wasa Rye Crisp but now I forget what the recipe was. Trish, I love to eat deli turkey rolled up with a slice of cheese, but we rarely buy deli meat. My husband took sandwiches for his lunch for 40 years so now he's not much of a sandwich eater. That's another thing I could eat endlessly. I have a lot of trigger foods. I have been sticking to foods that I will eat til satisfied and then stop. I eat mostly eggs, veggies, meat and fish. Tonight we will be going out to eat and I will be ordering talapia. It is baked with crushed pecans. It comes with a glaze but I order it without the glaze. I will have a tossed salad and broccoli. I will test before bedtime and won't eat a snack unless it's really low. I want to see if that helps my FBS. I believe I get the Dawn Phenomenon and a snack is supposed to help, but I still get a higher FBS. I've tried cheese, yogurt, fruit, just a protein, protein and carb...didn't change anything, just adds more calories. They say if you go too long without eating (like from dinner to breakfast) that your body thinks your starving and dumps glucose. My body seems to dump glucose even with a snack. Even with a good A1c I never had a good FBG. If I can get back to a good A1c I won't worry if my FBG is a little high. |

CARB WISE ... for having a bread-like item, it is ONLY 5 carbs, so I feel it is well worth spending some of my limited carbs on one serving worth (1/4 cup mix and water us all I use... Though I add egg whites when making the waffles.) FYI on the Agave... From what I understand, Agave is still a sugar and really is no better for us than any other sugar as the body reacts to it just the same as other sugars. For a diabetic, the result will be the same no matter which sugar you have, so be careful! |
There's no place like home, there's no place like home, there's no place like home. 24 hours and a click of the heels = I am back home, thank God! I like seeing family but there is always alot of eating out at places because my mom really doesn't cook or keep food in the house since she only eats like one meal a day. I always overate when we would eat out before and felt bad but it was worse this time since I am now trying to lower my carbs and the choices are just not real conducive to low carb so I am feeling extra icky. There is also no internet at my mom's and I get the shakes without the internet....just kidding....sort of, lol! So, I'm home!!
The good news is there was no world war III this time. My mom made gobs of comments but she never directed them at me or about me specifically so I was able to hit the ignore button and not respond. Rennie she did suggest to my daughter tonight where we should eat even though I said last night it was the only place I really didn't want to go so of course that is where she started chanting we must go tonight. Oh well, next time I will be stronger or order something else (it's a pizza buffet) off the menu. It was the first super carby meal I've eaten in about a week and so odd, no matter how much I ate I felt hungry, like it wasn't making a dent, so I kept eating and now, hours later I still have horrible indigestion. Oh well, lesson learned. |
Last night I was chopping vegetables with a brand new knife and slit the top of my thumb. Maybe I should have gone for stitches but I didn't. But it's extremely hard to type with this huge bandage on my thumb. I keep adding extra letters where they shouldn't be and leaving out letters that should. Hopefully by tomorrow I can go to a smaller bandage and type more!
I'm off to try to shower and wash my hair. Looking for a rubber glove to put over my hand. |

Carol Sue So sorry you cut your thumb. I hope it is better today.
Stomach is doing fine this morning. I was thinking about going on and upping my carbs to 25 g or 30 g, but won't do that until Monday. I'm not getting even 10 g fiber most of the time. I was going to eat brussel sprouts yesterday and it was too many carbs so I couldn't have them. I'll have to see. I think I forgot to check what the net carb was. Not doing the bike this week, but I am going to start riding it next week regardless of whether I do another week of Induction or start adding carbs. The reason I said go to 30 is because I seem to be getting more like 23 to 25 g now so I just may go ahead and go to 25 or 30. My weight has been 225.4 for 3 days in a row now which is a big change for me. And my fbs this morning was 93. BS after dinner last night was 102. So I am still motivated. Since I've been faithfully dieting since the day after Christmas, I really didn't expect a big water weight loss because I was handling water weight with my diuretic, but now I'm controlling it with the low carb way of eating. I am very happy with the way things are going. The Atkins bar will definitely be an emergency thing (maybe). I say maybe because I didn't really enjoy it and last night I decided to eat just 1/4 of one and it just doesn't do anything for me. I think because the only time I crave sweets when my blood sugar is running high close to 200. Now that it is down, sweets are not a problem for me. I wasn't one of those kids who ate a lot of sweets mainly because my Mama loved sweets and we had them all the time. I never ate it very often. When my Daddy wasn't home at night, she always made homemade fudge. She and my sisters would eat it, but I didn't want any of it. Now I did have a problem with salty things like chips, but now that the new Atkins plan says low carbers need to eat salt to keep from having leg cramps, I can have salt on my food which I like mostly on meat, I don't even have a cravings for that either. I find that I am able to get by on 3 meals and a snack because the cravings are gone. I would say to anyone who is looking for a way of eating that is healthy for them is this, keep looking until you find what works for you. I know I probably drove people crazy trying to find a way of eating that I could live with. I am happy to say that I've finally found mine. Have great weekend. |
This is the first time I've admitted this to anyone but God. When I was a kid I stole money from my mother's purse DAILY to buy chocolate candy. I was so hooked. Never got caught, either. I could eat a whole bag of Hershey's Kisses in one sitting. But it has to be plain chocolate. No nuts, caramel, or anything else.
|
Just checking in to report that I am slowly dropping pounds on a low carb plan and my FBGL has been great. Next week I start back at the gym and WILL get my HA1C done soon. I've not been around much as I've been up to my butt in tax stuff and dental stuff but WELCOME to the new folks.
