Trish, I can't believe you mentioned the doctor who had his patients eat low carb 6 days and eat carbs on the 7th day. This morning I was just reading about it. It is in a book called Carb Nite Solution. I will not buy the book because the cheapest I can find it is $25 plus shipping and I don't want to spend that much. I was reading another low carb forum and this one woman stated that she was getting a red rash on her torso. Someone came back and said that is a condition caused by extreme low carb diets. She said she started adding a little more carb in the form of beans and the rash went away. Someone else suggested the Carb Nite Solution diet. In reading about it I saw that it is mostly promoted for weight loss....it tricks your hormones by eating those carbs that one day, but I am interested in it because of the rash. I was diagnosed with psoriasis years ago. It was mild. Over the years I have had much more of it, mainly on my torso, and it looked different from my other psoriasis. Now I'm thinking that it might have to do with low carb. After I had my second bowel surgery my doctor put me on a diet of soft foods, lots of pasta etc. After that my "psoriasis" cleared up completely, and I didn't know why. Psoriasis is considered permanent and there is no cure. Now that I have been on this strict low carb program for about a month, the rash is coming back bad on my torso. Both sides going down under my arm and on my upper thighs. It has me wondering. I don't want to add carbs since this is doing so good with my blood sugar, but I'm wondering what would happen if I did one carb day a week and then got right back on low carb. 1) Could I do it without causing a week long binge? 2) Would 1 bad spike a week totally wreck my glucose readings? I think I might try this one week and see if I can get right back on low carb the next day. I'm afraid, but if it gets rid of this rash, it might be worth it. I really enjoyed being rash free all last summer.

People reviewing the book said that it contains a lot of low carb menus, but I don't really need that. I just want to know how to do the diet. From what I read, you do low carb 6 days a week, like 30 carb gms per day, then on the 7th day you can eat high carbs over an 8 hour period. The next day you will have a slight upswing of weight and bloating, but in the days following when you go back to low carb you will experience more fat loss. The hardest part for me would be making the carb day the same day every week. I think I would make it mid week and would make spaghetti or lasagne that day, and eat toast with my breakfast, and a sandwich for lunch. I will NOT include unhealthy foods, like sweets, chips, ice cream etc. Just starchy carbs that I have been avoiding. And I will make sure to exercise good that day to help my blood sugar as much as I can.

I have tried so many crazy diet plans, what's one more? Right? LOL My main concern is my blood sugar. But I've proven that I can get it down, so I can do it again if need be.

pattygirl63 04-18-2014 01:34 PM

Hey Carol Sue, I was thinking about trying this too, but I can't always do it the same day either. We usually eat out during the week when one or both of us go to the doctor's office. So I think I will low carb everyday except for those days. Then on the weeks that we don't go out to eat, I'll pick a day during that week to do a carb day. We will probably go out Monday so if we go out I will make that my carby day. It will be interesting to see how well it works. I think eating 30 g carbs will be easier than 20 g too. Good luck on or new journey.

I hope that it will be fun to know that one day a week I can have a carb day. Like you I don't want junky carbs just some of those carbs I miss while low carbing.

Interesting about the rash from the low carb diet. I also get a rash sometimes. I usually get it from too much white carbs, but I noticed this time that I also had a rash with the low carb eating.

kris2008 04-18-2014 02:51 PM

Eating low carb for about 5 weeks, my FBS is 90 to 128 averaging 115. My last A1C was equivalent to 134 average. And I was eating lots of junk the few months before that reading! I need to be consistent with cardio exercise - every single morning and every single evening. I've lost about 7 pounds, need to get back on that track also.

My pickles are never sweet, always salty. My new kick is pickles dipped in peanut butter. Not going to lose weight that way! I'm still eating fruit - have berries in a morning smoothee (w/plain yogurt, flaxseed, spinach) and an orange or apple after my soup at lunch. Just really need to get control in evening. Carbs good, calories not! Will try cardio and some yoga as soon as I get home from work, before eating. Maybe that will calm my need to stuff myself.

Shannonsnail 04-18-2014 03:15 PM

Made sure to have my coffee today (set it up last night) and feeling better :-) it's funny bc two years ago I maybe had one cup a week, lol. I only drink a half cup per day but it's my only caffeine for the day too.

I'm watching my neighbor's daughter today so I'll be back later tonight to chat.

Wannabehealthy 04-18-2014 04:57 PM

Kris, you could have the pickles dipped in peanut butter as long as you allowed for it. Just check for carbs in each one. That actually sounds good even though I don't usually eat pickles. Sure you're not pregnant? LOL Just kidding!! According to my chart, an A1c equal to 134 is in the 6 range and I and my doctor would be happy with that, even though I know below 6 is better.

Trish, I do pretty good with low carb when I eat out because I usually order fish, with a hot veggie and a tossed salad. Or I get the salad bar and skip the carby stuff. I do make spaghetti or lasagne a couple times a month. I have eaten each of them once since I started this low carb and although I got a spike, it went right back down the next day. I think it's when you do carb on consecutive days that it goes up and stays up. I think I will make Wednesday my carb day, but the minute I have a problem with my blood sugar or my weight I will stop immediately. I don't want to screw up what I've worked so hard to do.

pattygirl63 04-18-2014 08:09 PM

I didn't make it with the 20 to 30g of low carb today. I think it is the fat. I'm not sure. I made stir-fry veggies with shrimp cooked in butter and added Alfredo sauce. The fat got to my stomach so bad that I had to eat some crackers to soak up the oil.

I'll try again tomorrow.

Shannonsnail 04-18-2014 08:37 PM

Carol Sue, re: psoriasis....it is an autoimmune condition so supposedly inflammatory foods make it worse. I think sugars and wheat are at the top of the list but I've also seen some say that dairy and eggs/meat from grain fed animals are as well.

Shannonsnail 04-18-2014 11:07 PM

It was a long day taking care of two 3.5 yr olds and I mowed the yard after dinner. I am going to sleep good tonight (hope the munchkin cooperates with that plan). I have taken almost two full days off from testing. Last tested yesterday morning. I will start back tomorrow morning, just needed a break.

Meant to tell ya'll that I made the cauliflower mash again and hubby ate it again and commented "who knew you could do that with cauliflower?!" LOL! I also made "cabbage steaks" or "cabbage wheels" and my hubby who said "I hate cabbage" was upset I didn't make a larger batch! Of course tonight I baked a wheat free sugar free chocolate chip walnut cookie batch and he said "these are a good substitute if you are dying" dying? Lol! I think they taste really good but he says that is bc I am not eating sugar. I really do think they are just as good as the regular cookies I used to bake. They have a different texture/consistency but taste-wise I really think they are just as good. Oh well, I'll take what I can get from him!

Wannabehealthy 04-19-2014 08:52 AM

Shannon, I was never officially diagnosed with psoriasis. I first started getting it around my ears and hairline and the doc looked at it and said that's psoriasis and prescribed a cream. Down the line I started getting it on the sides of my torso and some on my legs but it looked different. It was red dots rather than scaly patches. He said "guttae psoriasis." Never did a biopsy or any other tests. He referred me to a derm whom I didn't like at all. The options they gave me sounded horrible and dangerous. The drugs are expensive, and only work for a while, so not worth it for me. The light box has a risk of skin cancer. So does a tanning bed, so I chose the tanning bed. More in my price range. I have read so much about it, and have found that it is an autoimmune disease but people have different triggers. Mine never went into remission until I was put on that diet with lots of carbs, so that throws the wheat theory out the window. I have heard coffee and tea and right now I'm drinking a LOT of coffee. But when I quit the coffee that year, I still had it. I think it might be one of those things that just appears when it wants to with no rhyme or reason. I am willing to try this Carb Nite thing to see if there's anything to it. As I said before, if I see it messing up everything I've worked toward with my blood sugar I will stop. The psoriasis is not life threatening and not high on my priority list. Blood sugar is. Recently they said that psoriasis is tied to heart disease, which I do have. But psoriasis going away isn't going to make the heart disease go away.

Wannabehealthy 04-19-2014 09:01 AM

Shannon, I love cabbage and I eat a lot of it, but I chop it and put it in a pan with onions and butter and put a lid on it until it's tender. I googled the cabbage steaks and they look interesting to me, too. DH would not eat it. The only way he eats cabbage is when it's wrapped around a hunk of ground beef in a stuffed cabbage roll. LOL All the recipes I see have the same basic ingredients....olive oil, salt, pepper. Maybe I will make some today. I am going to be roasting a turkey breast so they can just go in the oven with that. Thanks for mentioning it!

When my husband wants a cookie he wants it to be a real cookie, with all the sugar and fat it's supposed to have. I wouldn't even consider offering him anything else. I rarely eat sweets, but if I were going to, it would be Haystacks made with Fiber One cereal, melted chocolate chips and peanut butter. At least I would feel healthy with the Fiber One cereal. LOL

Wannabehealthy 04-19-2014 09:16 AM

Here's another book we might be interested in. I got an advertisement from Prevention for the book "Beat Diabetis Naturally." They want $31.95 plus shipping! That's not going to happen! I check online and our library has it so I'm going to go get it. The ad mentions vinegar, cinnamon, and says burn belly fat 7 X faster. I'm curious. Maybe I'll stop there today.

pattygirl63 04-19-2014 09:36 AM

A quick flyby as I should be walking out the door right now to go to beauty shop.

I sure did want that 1 sl of toast this morning, but low carb won out. I passed it up and I'm going to the store after I get out of beauty shop. Going to get some more meat that I really like that I think will help me stay on plan. My main problem is what to eat when I cook dinner for just me. I'll also get some salad fixings too.

kris2008 04-19-2014 10:14 AM

I am so excited to be halfway to weight loss goal today!!!! I have not been below 160 pounds in 20 years!

Shannon - Can't wait to hear your new official blood numbers.

Carol Sue - Thanks for A1C info. You're right, I was in the higher 6's than before. Trouble is I've been "borderline" for about 10 years and never did anything about it. (And now I know that borderline isn't great for the body either.) Now that I am officially not borderline but over the line, I had to take control. And of course I am hoping that I won't have to take medication.

Trisha - It's just me for dinner most of the time. My best dinners are big vegetable salads with chicken or a boiled egg with dressing I make. Olive oil, rice vinegar, lemon juice, herbs and garlic. Greens, tomatoes, a carrot, onions, celery, roasted vegetables like brussel sprouts or broccoli, some apple. I'm full, really had a lot of carbs but also fiber and fat and protein. Fiber fat and protein at every meal! And the scale and sugar numbers usually look good the next morning.

kris2008 04-19-2014 10:48 AM

Here's what Bernstein says about eating too much at one time:

"The upper part of the small intestine contains cells that release hormones into the bloodstream when they are stretched, as after a meal. These hormones signal the pancreas to produce some insulin to prevent the blood sugar rise that might otherwise follow the digestion of a meal. Large meals will cause greater stretching of the intestinal cells, which in turn will secrete proportionately larger amounts of these 'incretin' hormones. Since a very small amount of insulin released by the pancreas can cause a large drop in blood sugar, the pancreas simultaneously produces the less potent hormone glucagon to offset the potential excess effect of the insulin. If you're diabetic and deficient in producing insulin, you might not be able to release insulin, but you will still release glucagon, which will ... raise your blood sugar. Thus, if you eat enough to feel stuffed, your blood sugar can go up by a large amount, even if you eat something indigestible, like sawdust."

He's mainly talking about Type 1, but this will happen to Type 2's to a lesser degree. So this is one reason that eating too much of even the "right" foods is not good for us.

Wannabehealthy 04-19-2014 04:08 PM

Kris, I do notice that sometimes I get a higher blood sugar than expected even though I've stayed low carb and that is probably because of portion size. That's what got me to 217 lbs in the first place....I do have a great appetite! That's the main thing I have to work on. Thanks for posting the info. I forgot to look it up.

You made me want to go make a big salad! LOL I didn't eat many salads over winter because it was so cold I wanted hot food. Now it's salad weather.

Good for you getting halfway! I would be ecstatic to get to 160. My BP and BG would be in a much better range and I would fit in my clothes I grew out of but kept, just in case. Right now I'm happy for each pound I lose, and every day that I don't gain.

Best to stay off meds if you can, but if you go on Metformin, it will help with weight loss and most people don't get side effects as long as you start out with a low dose.

I went to the library and got the book Beat Diabetes Naturally and also The Best Life Guide to Managing Diabetes and Pre-Diabetes. Bob Greene wrote the second one, along with an endocrinologist and nutritionist. I'm interested in seeing what they have to say. Getting the book from the library is much better that putting out the money and then no liking the book. Even if I don't learn anything new it will keep me in the healthy eating mode.

I cooked a turkey breast today. That was my original plan for the family dinner for Easter, to make the turkey for our dinner today and then serve leftover turkey with the ham on Easter. I'm still going to cook a half ham tomorrow even though the family isn't coming because DH said he wants some ham. I want him to eat whatever he will eat as he hasn't been eating much. I don't know who's going to eat all this food, but at least I will have protein for next week and won't have to cook any more.

pattygirl63 04-19-2014 08:03 PM

I went to the store and got salad stuff, a small ham and brisket. Came home and put the ham in the oven. I put some of it in the freezer and some in the fridge. I made a nice big salad with a little over 4 oz ham in it. I counted it on MFP as 6 because I had a small piece for taste when I took it out of the oven and then a couple of bites when I cut it up. Any way, I figure DH and I can have our main meal and then I can eat a nice chef type salad for dinner. This way I can see to it that I get my veggies in. I don't think I will have to track my food on MFP if I eat this way because there is no way I'm going to eat the 1640 calories they say I am allowed. I eat my eggs and bacon in the morning and a salad, protein and another veggie like broccoli, cabbage or brussel sprouts, etc each day. I just might add one or true fruits into the plan... 1 at breakfast and 1 at lunch, because I find it very difficult to even get up to 1200 calories eating this way. Maybe the few days we eat out will make up the difference in the low calorie days.

Kris I had already made my salad and I chuckled when I read you post. I'm like Carol Sue I love salads when the weather this time of the year. I found it difficult to eat them during the cold weather. Congratulations on being half way to your goal.

Carol Sue I haven't had a library card in years. I think I should get one. I used to love to go to the library when my kids and grandkids were growing up. I homeschooled the grandkids and made them learn to read books and do research using the library. I was going to get one when we first moved here and the they were closed down remodeling the library at the time and I never bothered to go back. That is bad, isn't it.

Shannon I used to babysit for a living so I know keeping up with two 3.5 yr olds can be fun and trying. However, you do a great job. Yey :carrot: with DH liking 2 out of 3 new foods. Not bad. Mine probably wouldn't eat a cabbage any other way but boiled with butter. I try to make what he likes or will eat at our one together meal each day. Then I eat what I want for breakfast and dinner.

Since I'm bored with tired of food right now and learned from Atkins that it doesn't hurt to wait up to 6 hrs between meals, I am only eating 3 meals, but they aren't huge meals. I didn't put anything out for lunch before I left today so I went by Zaxby's and got DH chicken zingers and got me one of their sensational salads. Well it was not sensational to me. I don't know the seasoning they used but I hated it. I ate about 1/3 of it and threw it out. For one thing, I thought it was grilled chicken and it was fried so I couldn't eat much of it and it must have been a ceaser type salad because it didn't have anything but greens in it. It tasted a sickening sweet and tangy flavor that almost made me sick. I'm not sure how much of that may be the fact that I've been having problems with my stomach. I've pretty much decided that I just can't eat a lot of fat or protein either. So I'm trying to keep the fat and protein kind of low as well as the carbs.

Y'all have a really nice Easter.

Shannonsnail 04-19-2014 08:38 PM

Today was a weird eating day. Woke later than usual, ended up eating strawberries with my coffee instead of eggs, it was so close to lunch. Went to a community day at the church where my daughter attends preschool and it was a BBQ lunch - ate a little bbq (it was spicier than I like), slaw and beans (resisted bread, chips, cookies and lemonade, lol). Had a cheeseburger (no bun) with guacamole for dinner. Then I wanted to make resurrection rolls with my daughter. Ended up eating one mostly bc I just did not eat enough today and my will power was crumbling. They weren't that great so I don't know why I caved really. Ate a handful of nuts to counteract some of the sugar. I just got my daughter bathed and in bed and I'm still hungry.

Hello Everyone, Just wanted to wish you all a Blessed and Happy Easter :)

I've been reading as usual but IMO this thread needs to be printed. There is always a wealth of information here. I have my good days and my not so good days. I have decided that starting on Monday I will go back to the way I was eating in January. That is the only way I am going to be able to get to the next decade. I am going to go on MFP and look up my menus from then and right down the ones that I really liked.

I wasn't active here in January, how were you eating then?

:egg::easter3:CHICKIES!!! HAVE A BLESSED!!!

Shannonsnail 04-21-2014 08:50 AM

Hope everyone had a good Easter! My weight is still down 196.2 today, a total loss of 14.6 lbs. I was anticipating seeing 196 today but it was close. My eating was not "bad" yesterday but I did eat more carbs than usual. My daughter has speech this morning and we are running behind so I will check in later today.

Ruthxxx 04-21-2014 09:48 AM

Bless me sisters for I have sinned.

I went off my low carb plan for several days (since Wednesday) and have managed to get back up to 196 this morning. A lot of it is from carbs and I'm sure some of it was from eating ham every day. Lots of water going down the hatch today. No. I've not tested my FBGL lately - I need new strips and there is no drugstore nearby that is open today.

On a brighter note, we are definitely in Spring and I'm hoping to get some in my steps!

I shall now go and sin no more!

lotsakids 04-21-2014 09:48 AM

Made it through Easter!! Did not eat the potato salad, had my hamburger sans the bun and stayed out of the Easter candy whoot!!

Ruthxxx 04-21-2014 09:49 AM

But I did manage to avoid Easter candy. (A maple syrup pie isn't candy, is it? ) ;)

Wannabehealthy 04-21-2014 10:20 AM

Good Morning! Beautiful day out there so far. Hope it stays that way. DH has been sitting on the back porch for about 30 min a day and I think that's helping his recovery. It's slow, but he says he's starting to feel a little better. If we have rain, he will not be able to sit out.

Trish, I decided that yesterday was my carb day for this week. I had my eggs for breakfast. After I put my ham in the oven I made a small portion of potato salad, just enough for DH and I. It turned out to be about a cereal bowl full....just enough. DH didn't eat any, so his is still left. But I did eat some and I had a ham sandwich with my 35 cal multi-grain bread. Honestly, I felt awful the rest of the day. I used to eat like this all the time, but forgot how I used to feel. Stuffed, bloated. The only veggies I had all day were the beets that were in the Beet Horseradish I made and some asparagus. DH wanted asparagus, and right now I'm making anything he asks for because I want him to eat...especially veggies. So now I am back to low carb until next week, when I will try to do a carb day on Tuesday or Wednesday. I am up one lb which I suspect is fluid, but that's how they said it works. You go up, but then after going back to low carb you go down. It better work that way after how terrible I felt yesterday. I took a glimiperide yesterday to counteract the carbs and my BS came down nicely. Yesterday, I filled my pill box for the week and saw that out of 14 doses of glimiperide last week I only took 4. I'm glad I have it when I need it but glad I don't need it on a regular basis. I don't know if that's good or bad. They always tell you to take your meds the way it's prescribed, but I compare this to injecting insulin. You wouldn't inject insulin of your glucose was already low.

Trish, when I was a kid I went to the library in our hometown. After I moved out on my own, that town became a bad area so I wouldn't go there anymore. When I married and moved to this town I joined their library, but it was in the downtown area and only had on-street parking with meters. It was hard to get a parking place and you couldn't stay long because you were putting money in the meter. I was concerned about walking to my car alone so I didn't go for quite a few years. Now they built a new library away from the downtown area with a big parking lot, so I went back and got a card. I don't get my fiction novels from there because I get so many paperbacks given to me by my friend. We trade off and sometimes buy used at flea markets. But when there is a book mentioned that seems interesting to me I look on the library's website and see if they have it. I can put a hold on it, or just go down and get it.

I finally read through the Beat Diabetes Naturally, and although the information was good, it was mostly what I already knew. They were pushing supplements, and you know I am not in favor of supplements. I want to do this naturally. They are calling supplements "natural" as opposed to pharmaceuticals. But when you research online you see all these side effects from supplements that they don't tell you about. On the website for ordering the book from Prevention they were offering a little booklet as a free gift and I think that's where the info was I was looking for. You don't get that with the book from the library. It was about foods to help when you have diabetes and was advertised as having info on the cinnamon and vinegar. I wanted to read that because although I have tried both I don't see much improvement from either and wanted to see what it had to say about it. I have read about it online and it all says it is supposed to work, but I thought maybe I'm doing something wrong. All in all, I'm glad I read the book, but really glad I didn't put out the money to buy it.

The other book was not interesting to me. It was more basic information for someone new to Diabetes. It involved foods that I don't usually eat. I am very happy with my high vegetable plan and wish to continue with that. :broc:

Shannon, I am wondering if there's something you can make ahead and have handy to grab in the morning when you are short on time. Maybe the low carb muffins I posted a while back. I don't know how well they keep. They were mexican flavor, but could probably be adjusted to any flavor you like. It's really hard with little kids. My DIl deals with my 5 year old grandson, the way you do with your daughter. Their needs come first and you have to fit your needs to their schedule.

Rennie, it's good to see you back here. I know you have done well since January because I remember when you started posting here your numbers were closer to mine and you left me in the dust, so to speak! You have done a great job, and I have no doubt that you will get back on track with it. You always gave me incentive to try harder and take things more seriously.

Mad, Ruthie, Kris, Donna and lurkers, come out, come out, where ever you are!

We're back and today is clean the house day so I'll be keeping busy. My house is so bad they might come condemn it! Not really but it's way past my breaking point for sure.

Carol Sue last week I made some egg based muffins the night before I knew we'd have a busy morning but they overcooked so the texture was a little off. I need a grab and go option for busy mornings but haven't found the right one yet. Today we left with me not eating anything and I made my regular breakfast when I got home but I'm sure my BS was rising the whole time so that is not the best.....will have to think about it some more.

I was planning a pot roast for tonight but realized I was missing an important ingredient (have I mentioned I am a horrible meal planner?) so I think it will be tacos instead. They are always my back up plan. I will make a salad with mine.

For those who like Starbucks, I made this copycat yesterday and it was really good! http://www.joyinourjourney.com/1/pos...pp-recipe.html

I thought I'd share this pic here....one of my goals is to be able to get my engagement ring back on. I took it off while pregnant in April 2010 and have not been able to get it back on or get my wedding band off since...4 years. I'm not there yet but I think you can tell from this that I'm a tiny bit less puffy. Pardon the dry skin.

love2b150 04-21-2014 03:17 PM

Trish love the Happy Easter banner

Shannon in January I gave up bread, pasta, rice, potatoes and sweets/snacks. I loss 10.2lbs. I need to get back to that way of eating because I have obviously loss control so it's time to detox again :) Shannon 14.6lbs is great :carrot: Is that since you've been on 3FC? You're doing great :high: and yes you can see a difference, :woohoo: for being able to wear your engagement ring soon :)

Hi Ruth glad the ice is melting and spring is on the horizon for you :) Maple syrup pie sounds interesting :)

Donna good for you on the Easter candy :)

Thanks Carol Sue, your numbers are better than mine now though :) I'm still trying to get there. I would love to see double digit numbers :) It's funny how we get the different books and read through them only to read what we already knew in the first place :)

Well weight was up some more as suspected 163.8 but that's ok. I will see a better number tomorrow because today is Positively On Point ... so far ;) FBS was better than it has been in a week or so, 117 so that made me smile.

kris2008 04-21-2014 08:00 PM

Shannon - Your hands look great! I find that even grabbing a hard-boiled egg or a hunk of cheese and maybe an apple will keep me going several hours in the morning.

I am concentrating on always having fat and protein at every meal. Have you noticed how hard it is to find full fat yogurt? Nearly impossible! I was eating Stonyfield but couldn't find any with fat, so I tried the Brown Cow. Really like it!

I received no education with my diagnosis. Did you? I was given a meter though. And what is with the American Diabetes Association guidelines? Really - 45-60 carbs a meal? I sure hope I am remembering that wrong. I have too many friends with dire consequences because they didn't get their Type 2 under control. One did not get any education on diet etc, and thought taking the pills would be enough. He is almost blind in one eye and problems with the other now, on insulin and sugar still out of control. I know we are not all the same but it seems to me that we need to do a better job of education.

Okay rant over.

A quick flyby to say I'm still here. We have a couple of busy days today and tomorrow. DGS came by after church yesterday and he has decided to go home in June instead of July. He has an opportunity to go to DC with his college class if he can pay for it so he has changed when he is going. This works out better for me because I want to be home in TX to celebrate my Daddy's 91st birthday. I was disappointed when I had to change my plans to go in July and miss it, but now my sister and I can plan a celebration so I can be there. Have to get car serviced etc to get ready.

Carol Sue today was my carby day. We ate out today and I had fish sandwich (didn't eat all the bread and about 5 onion rings. I always drink water. Came home and had snack foods. I really missed my veggies today. I too hope this works, because I too am uncomfortable after eating foods I haven't been eating in a while. Maybe we will find out that we really love eating low carb. :dizzy: That would be a change wouldn't it.

We are taking the car to get new tires, have front end aligned and brakes checked. Haven't had to do that since we bought the car so really need to. So will be eating at a cafeteria close by while waiting. I sure hope I can stay on plan. Haven't eaten there in a while. It is locally owned and last time we ate there it was kind of greasy. So will do my best to stay OP. Surely they will have at least baked fish or chicken and I should be able to have a salad and greens or green beans. So I have my plan.

Shannon Great on on the new low. You are doing really well.

Ruthie We all have those times when we just have to eat off. You will get back OP I'm sure. Glad you are going to be able to get out. I know you are ready.

Donna Great job staying away from the Easter candy. I wanted some jelly beans soooo bad, but I just walked right by them and wouldn't even look at any Easter candy at all. Didn't even go down the isle cause I knew it would call my name.

Rennie Glad you are back and on track again. You'll do good.

Kris I have looked for full fat yogurt here in town and can't find even low fat. Everything even Greek is nonfat.

I'll catch y'all tomorrow.

Shannonsnail 04-21-2014 09:02 PM

The only place I can find full fat yogurt is Trader Joes. Whole Foods probably has it too. Not sure what you have to choose from down there in New Orleans Kris

Ok, Rennie so that is what I have been doing also. I was 210.8 the day after Christmas and 208 on March 25 so most of what I've lost has been since the 25th. I got active on 3FC around that same time.

Wannabehealthy 04-22-2014 08:20 AM

Shanon, I can really see the difference in your hands. I don't think I will ever be able to wear my wedding ring again, but I got new ones and I like them better because they are white gold and the old ones are yellow gold.

Kris, when I was diagnosed, I was in the hospital after my open heart surgery. The nurses didn't even know I hadn't been diabetic before the surgery. They gave me a meter and told me to check my sugar and record it in a little book. They didn't tell me what to do with the information! Then a dietician came and talked to me, but I didn't absorb much of what she said. They DO say to eat 45 gm of carb at each meal and 15 gm of carb with each of 2 daily snacks. I would be shooting up the insulin for sure! LOL

First day home I had a home nurse come in and she showed me how to test. I was so scared, dealing with heart surgery AND diabetes. I learned what I know from posting on forums and asking lots of question, and reading about it.

Rennie, I still get higher numbers sometimes, like this morning at 131, but after the 200's and 300's that is still an improvement. I don't know what I did that caused that. I had some leftover turkey with mushroom soup and the soup probably had too many carbs. Since I ate that, I didn't eat all my veggies I usually eat.

Trish, I think my body is well adjusted to low carb. I really felt terrible when I ate that sandwich and potato salad. That is now definately off my menu! I have really missed my veggies the past few days and can't wait to get back to eating them. They fill me up without the bloat. I still have an occasional piece of toast with my eggs in the morning, usually when I don't have any veggies to mix in with them.

Donna, good job on staying away from the candy and potato salad. I read somewhere that if potatoes are cooked and then refrigerated and served cold (as in potato salad) they lose a lot of their starchy properties. I don't remember exactly where I read it, but it was when I was researching resistant starch. Since anyone can say anything on the internet, I didn't take it to heart and will still be very cautious with potato salad.

Ruthie! Everybody has little slip ups around the holidays. You are no exception. Go, and sin no more!

Wannabehealthy 04-22-2014 08:43 AM

Here is an article about Resistant Starch. I don't think it's the same article I read previously, but it says basically the same thing. I bought the Bob's Red Mill potato starch and tried it dissolved in water. It has relatively no taste, but it made me really burpy so I quit drinking it. I have used it as a thickening agent in things like chili and tomato sauce, but I don't know if it has the same effect that way. I might try drinking it again. I wonder if I could mix it in with my vinegar/lemon water?

Carol Sue - Weight and fbs up some this morning after yesterdays carby eating. Although it wasn't all that high. Up almost 2 lbs and fbs was 123, that isn't too bad. I think it will have to work rrrreeeaaalllyy good for me to do that once a week. I'll see. Sure don't like the way I felt. I started low carb again this morning. I think I like just having an off meal or off snack once in a while better. But I will give this a chance. I have blood work the 28th of this month and doctor's appt the 1st week of June when they will weigh me and do the A1c. Sure don't want to screw that up.

Rennie I like your eating in January. No bread, pasta, sugar, rice or potatoes. That is a really good way to eat.

Shannon You have really worked hard work and hope you get to see good results that show it.

Don't know if we are going to Taco Bell or the cafeteria just hope I can be strong and stay oP.

Ruthie Hope you had a good day yesterday and all is going good today.

Fatmad Where are you? Hope you are ok and just busy. Miss you loads.

BBL

Shannonsnail 04-22-2014 02:35 PM

Woohoo! My FBS was 101 (been over 7 yrs since I've had a fasting that low at the dr) and my A1c was 6% (down from 6.2% in Dec). The doctor noticed my weight loss as well. Usually I have to return every 4 mths but she is letting me go 6 mths this time before recheck (and complete physical). Success! As a side note, my meter read about 15 pts higher immediately before the draw so maybe the "prime" does run higher than the "micro" (Relion brand meters). I did get the control material and my new strips are within range with the "prime" so the meter is not defective. It's reassuring to know the higher values I have seen on there might have actually been closer to normal if I had been tested in a lab at the same time. My weight was higher at the dr than at home, of course, but it was below 200!

Thanks Trish, this thread is just so busy, I just read :)

Kris the only time I was given nutrition classes was in 1997 I forget what insurance I had but I was pregnant with my son and they put me on a diet to control gestational diabetes. Each time afterwards and with different insurance I was told to keep an eye on my sugar intake, don't eat a lot of breads and sweets. That's it. Twice put on insulin and in 2011 out on metformin. But still no classes unless I pay for them myself and they weren't cheap up north and you had to do a series of them.

Shannon it's amazing how cutting those things out does a body good. And once you get them out you don't miss them but if I slip up then it is on :) :yay: Shannon you are doing very well. I'm happy for you

Carol Sue it was definitely the soup. I like cream of chicken soup and it does that to me each time along with the sodium bloat :) I saw an all time low for this year 108. I was shocked but my carbs were super low for the day. I think it I ate all meat and eggs for a day the numbers would be where they should be but eggs make me gag after two days. Not sure why but I just don't like them the way I use to. I don't care how they are made. Potato salad I can eat only with green beans, greens or peas now. I can't eat it alone and I can only eat a spoon of it (not the huge serving spoon) the spoon we refer to as a tablespoon with the silverware :) Radiojane on another thread was experimenting/using the potato starch she said it made her burpy also. I forget the reason for trying it. I don't need anything else to gas me up. It seems that is all I have since starting this journey this time. Everything I mean everything gives me gas. I haven't drank the vinegar water in awhile. I need to get back to it. The plain lemon water bloats my stomach really bad, but the cucumber, lemon/lime water doesn't.

well I loss .8 of the birthday water/junk but I am bloated from the sodium filled things I've had today. My rings are not tight but they usually twirl around my finger and drive me nuts so I take them off. FBS was great at 108 but like I said I had a great day yesterday. Hope it all continues :D

Congrats Shannon! Great news!

pattygirl63 04-22-2014 09:16 PM

Well, got new tires, front end aligned and they said brakes were fine. Said the brake pads looked new. Only thing left to do before trip in June is to get oil changed. Not really time to have it done, but with the miles we will put on the car, we will do it before we leave.

Ate at the cafeteria and food was not all that great. I got the meatloaf which was fair and the salad with ranch dressing was good (I always like salad). But the greens were a real disappointment. With what the greens cost, I tried to eat them, but there was no way. I honestly believe they had sugar of some sort in them and sweetened greens taste awful. My Mama used to put sweet pickle juice in spinach, but this was not pickle juice. The only good thing is that except for the little bit of greens I did eat, I was pretty much low carb. I came home and checked my bs before I ate dinner and it was 115. I think that is good since the fbs was 123 this morning.

Carol Sue How are you doing on the low carb today? I am starting to crave veggies after my one high carby day. If that makes me eat healthier 6 days after the high carb day, that could be helpful. Did you download the info from the first link you shared? I'm kind of skeptical about adding starches of any kind. What did you think about it? I didn't really have time to do much with it, but will read it tomorrow.

Shannon Great doctor's visit. I am thrilled for your accomplishment.
