May Chat
Happy month of May! Please pop in and let us know how you are doing.
Finally I saw 191 on the scale yesterday and my BGL is in good range. Now to keep it up. Unfortunately I seem to deviate too much from my planned menus and need to remember to have dairy and more vegetables. I just can't get enthused about veggies. How is the world treating you? |
We had a busy week with lot of :sunny: and cool temps; and this weekend we had some :rain: until this afternoon when Mr. Sunshine came back out and the temps rose to 75+F ... that's quite warm for this time of year here. Eating has been OK, but could do a bit better I think; not horrible but like you I get tired of the salads each day. Have to go shopping for some more fruits and veggies real soon ...
Hope you all are having a lovely weekend ... Rosebud :flow1: |
happy may
Friday was absolutely glorious. Warm and sunny all day and went for dog walks and enjoyed supper on the deck even. I worked most of the night tho, so the rain on Saturday was fine, since I slept through most of it. It is still warm tho, but cloudy now and we are expecting thunder storms later.
My sugars are ok, but had quite a few carbs yesterday. Will be at a conference for the next few days, I hope I can eat ok there. May have to order special stuff there so I can stick to plan. This group often has afternoon snacks of tea/coffee and cookies. Any suggestions on getting through that temptation? I am thinking of heading outside for walks. Its also near a casino, I though I don't have a gambling addiction (yet) I have to stay clear of that place, I get addicted to computer games so I am sure I would just keep going through $ too. Cassandra: what do you think your next step is going to be? Just reducing portion sizes and do more walking? I think cravings are going to be part of any changes in the way of eating, and we have to deal and get through them Hopefully good diet keeps them to a minimum if we are not actually hungry and we can keep to plan. have a good week everyone, I will try to keep in touch! |
I am still on track. My blood sugar this morning was 154! Lowest yet this year after only 11 days calorie counting and trying to keep carbs under 50% of my food for the day.
|
Good going, May! Limiting carbs is the trick for you. I have to remember to eat mine at supper or I have really bad lows in the morning.
|
I'm so frustrated. I went to part one of a two-part diabetes class at my doc's. Didn't really learn anything new (I'm a crazy Google-hound, and have been really studiously educating myself on pre-D and D). And both the Diabetes Educator and the Nutritionist made it very clear that cutting down on carbs was not an option, so don't even think about it.
So much for me asking low-carb questions. /sigh I mean, I understand that if you're on various medicines that impact your insulin and such, you need to be very careful about making sure they have enough glucose in your system for them to work on. But what about those of us who are trying to do this with diet and exercise first? From using my meter and monitoring my pp bg, I KNOW that if I eat their recommended 45-60 grams of carbs per meal I'll spike. I know I can eat one, maybe two servings (15-30 grams) for lunch or dinner, but not at breakfast. I guess I'm just frustrated that they didn't even allow for questions or discussion. Just "dont' do it", and left it at that. The section on portion control was very handy, I will admit. She handed around rubber replicas of what a "serving" was. So it wasn't a total loss. |
I feel your frustration but the diet "educators" have to follow the guidelines of the ADA or the CDA. I just do my own thing. (In private, my nurse and doctor agree that carb control is the key for me and that everyone is different.)
|
 We've had a mixed bag of weather lately; :sunny: and :rain: and had a big thunderstorm with lightening this afternoon so had to shut down my PC to protect it from damage. It finally rolled through to the east and we are back again. We went shopping today as I was really getting low on veggies and fruit and some other basics, so I got lots of walking in. We had BBQ spit chicken lunch, so we had a light dinner tonight.
:welcome: to SYNGER and TEXASMARY (again) ~ yes some people can go lower carb or low carb, but I have to eat some grain or starch carbs a day or I get too hungry; my sugars go down too low on me, esp at night (2-3 am). Each of us is a bit different, I think. There are some people who believer low carb diets set you up for unbalanced sugar issues down the line and that it isn't sustainable. I was doing a pre-made calorie/portion plan; and now just trying to eat as healthy as I can so I can be as healthy as I can. Hope you all are having a great start to this new week; take good care ... Rosebud :flow1: |
hello
Hello, :)
It's been a long time since I came here. I'm trying to get back into the the grove and move this bulk. :o I'm a stress eater. :dizzy: Things are better this spring and I hope to be able to do a lot more exercising and finding the new me. :carrot:My new knees replacements are working great!:goodvibes I hope to keep my insulin use lower which will help too. I am so much better b/c of the insulin. My A1C went from 9.7 to 5.8 in a year. I check my sugar, then look at the carbs I will have in my meal, then figure my insulin. It works for me. It may not work for someone else. Everyone's different. Doc told me I was a brittle type 2. I think I was messing up more than anything. :oI take 40 of Lantes, twice a day as it didn't seem to carry over the 24hrs. I take Humolog before meals and snacks. I also take Januvia. And pills for other things! My weight is back up to ugly. I only weigh when my ankles are skinny as my legs swell easy. On to the new me! Woo Hoo! :dizzy::o:lol: |
Yes! I am certainly doing more walking, when this rain lifts up! For now, I'm stuck at home with a poorly ankle, but getting really better with my blood sugars. I have been consistently under 13 for the whole week so far! ^___^
I am fitting a lot more fruit and veg into my diet, trying to get at least one portion of steamed veggies in everyday. Yesterday I had the most delicious chunky leek and potato soup with a cheese sandwich on whole-wheat bread for lunch and I was FLOORED at how good it all was for less than 600 calories! Today for breakfast I had to have a bowl of Lucky Charms. DH is a fan of not letting food go to waste, so I have to help him finish his boxes of American cereal before they go off! lol I had a 99cal packet of special K mini breaks (little crisps made of special K cereal) for my mid-morning snack. Lunch I am having left over hamburger helper with broccoli & peas baked in with it. Dinner tonight is going to be tough because I am making DH's favourite...homemade...from scratch...Chicken parmesan. I even do the breadcrumbs myself! He is having his annual review at work on Tuesday next week, and we're hoping for a raise! lol This is my moral booster dinner for the weekend! I use wheat pasta for myself, but DH has to have the normal stuff. I also swapped out plain "gravy" and made up some chunky veggie varieties. I am going to be frying my chicken with a lo/no calorie cookie spray (sunflower oil) and I have to deep fry DH's. Blech. :) Feeling great and healthy recently :) <3 Lotsa love! |
:welcome: back, oldwriter. Don't be a stranger. ;)
Casandra, you are cooking up a storm and it's working for you. Will you have recipes to share? BGL is a bit high this morning but weight is steady. I did indulge in a piece of my rum cake at a meeting last night. Back to squeaky clean eating today though. Fibre 1, yogurt and strawberries coming up! |
Of course! lol
Preheat your oven to 350-375 F For my pasta sauce, I basically just purree tomatoes with steamed spinach/broccoli/celery/carrots etc, and splash in some oregano, garlic and a small amount of basil! (I just fill the blender to suit the amount needed!) I drizzle around half a cup to a cup of sauce in a baking pan and set it aside. The breadcrumbs are easy to make before hand. You take around 10 slices of your favourite bread (white or wheat works best for this recipe, though you can also make croutons this way! I sprinkle ranch dressing powder over them after putting olive oil over the bread before they go in the oven. Perfect salad accompaniment!) and bake them on a baking tray in the oven for 30 minutes or until golden brown at 250 degrees F. After they come out, you need to either "mash" the bread into tinsy bits or just run it through the food processor. I use a tupperware container that is about 2-4 inches deep to store them in. I add in a cup of parmesan cheese (grated fine) to the breadcrumbs and mix it up Then add a heaping tsp or two each of oregano, basil, and garlic salt. Mix it all together. Make it as fragrant as you can stand it!! :) Scramble up an egg in a bowl and set it beside the tub of crumbs. Pound out your chicken breasts to 1/2" thickness. (I like to "butterfly" my chicken breasts and then slice them all the way into two halves, making it easier and quicker to fry.) Dip them in the egg and then coat in the breadcrumb mixture I brown them in a frying pan (1tbsp butter and 1tbsp oil) for around 5 minutes per side, then drain them on a paper towel and transfer them into the baking pan on top of the pasta sauce. I sprinkle grated (or layer sliced) mozzerella cheese on top of the chicken breasts, sprinkle a bit of sauce on top to hold the cheese in place, then top it off with another sprinkle of parmesan. They they go in the oven (350 F) for 25-30 minutes or until cooked through. Gives you enough time to cook your pasta perfectly and heat up the rest of your sauce! lol :) Not 100% diabetic friendly, but not too bad! We all have to treat ourselves once in awhile. lol The breadcrumbs work great for making chicken strips or chicken nuggets with a bit more flavour too! |
Didn't do much today but did a better job of staying out of the kitchen to keep the munchies under control.
|
Casandra, your chicken recipe sounds delish! I'd substitute almond meal for the breadcrumbs to cut back on the carbs, but it would work very similarly.
My husband went to the Dutch (mennonite) market last night to do our weekly meat/cheese shopping. They have very fresh food. He also brought back two of my favorite treats -- a big soft pretzel, and some "cookies" that are made by spreading a sweetened cheese (like cannoli filling) on bread, rolling it up, dipping it in butter then cinnamon/sugar, and baking. /sigh Well, I did eat the pretzel, with cheese, for dinner, which is more carbs than I'm used to. But my pp numbers weren't too very high, though I saw it in my fbg this morning (108, rather than the high-90s I've been seeing lately). But I did NOT eat the bread cookies! |
CASANDRA ~ I agree that your CHICKEN PARMESAN sounds great; I would make the same only omit the bread crumbs. You could use a little wheat flour or oat bran instead of them but add the seasoning: that's what I do; much less carbs that way too. I also like to add veggies into my tomato sauce like grated zucchini and minced spinach (to fool DH). I freeze bags of baby spinach and cut them up using scissors; this is great for sauces, soups, and stews.
:welcome: TO ALL OUR NEWBIES and RETURNEES too ~ nice to have you all here in our thread; the more the merrier, I say. Have been busy lately; went up to out lots two times and got lots of landscaping stuff done before the onslaught of mega-buggies. Then would you believe it ***** again yesterday and last night; was :sunny: today, but they are predicting cooler weather again for tomorrow. Just had a quiet day today; went for a lovely drive to a lake this aft and saw some lovely loons pairing up; and then came home and made pizza at home tonight as our Friday fun night meal. Time for some tea and do some more crocheting before bed. Take good care and have a wonderful weekend too ... Rosebud :flow1: |
hello again
back from a week away, first my conference, then a weekend visiting with friends. I managed to (mostly) stick to eating plan, sugars have been great, and I didn't gain any weight. Haven't been exercising much at all, so that is something I have to get to work on this week.
My conference went well, I had to speak a couple of times and run a couple of seminars, and did ok with that. Met some awesome women too. For any hockey fans, I got to see the STANLEY CUP and get my photo taken with it. That was a real highlight of the week. Also spent an evening with my father, so overall everything was good. This is Mother's Day, and it sucks not to have my mother here for this anymore, so I mostly have ignored the day as much as possible. I'm feeling pretty blue now, but that isn't the mood I've been in most of the week. SO I am feeling pretty good, and getting by most days ok. Hope things go ok for everyone here. The spring weather is coming back with the sunshine, and that should help. |
I am always looking for ways to improve my recipes! I have tried making it with crushed up cereal, but it just didn't work out that well!
Almonds and oat flour next time, methinks! I love the flavour of baked almonds! I had a super low (for me) last night. 2.8 X_____x I gorged myself on gummy bears, I just couldn't stop until I felt better...It was so weird! I woke up with a high in the middle of the night, no ketones and its going down, its almost 11am now and I'm normal. I'll be able to have lunch! lol I have a few essays to work on, I was very ill for a few months in the school year so I will get an extention to finish them. :( I really don't feel like writing about Prohibition right now though! :) |
Good morning all.
Another week to work on our personal renovation plans. I sure need to step it up as my weight is up a tad from a week of poorly planned food. When I'm really busy, I'm inclined to grab and go which is silly! Last night it was ribs(bad) from the freezer with quinoa (good) but no veggie. (bad) so BGL was 6.2 this morning, a tad high for me. Isn't it great that we get a brand new day every 24 hours? |
YES, RUTH ~ I agree, I felt very hungry today and may have eaten a bit more than I needed, me thinks, but tomorrow I will try to reign that in. It is great that we get another chance every 24 hours ... indeed! Yet, I did well on the weekend, so that was a victory really.
CASANDRA ~ I am always tweaking my recipes too; and looking for ways to improve them. I have also heard of using dry pancake powder mix with some seasonings, although I usually use flour (now whole wheat flour) but you can definitely use oat flour or what we call oat bran too or almond flour or meal. I love to use "oat bran" now as a thickener instead of flour; it works great for that as well! MADALEINE ~ to you during this time; that first year or so is so tough with all the holidays and birthdays and things that bring back memories. It's true that grieving and healing does take some time ... Hope you all have a wondeful week coming up ... Rosebud :flow2: Oh and btw, my tulips are now getting ready to bloom (one yellow is out), even with all these low temps (below freezing) and ***** ... amazing!!! |
Went to the second of Kaiser's Diabetes basic classes. This three-hour session dealt with medicines -- what they are, what they do, what to know about them (can you drink, do they interact with other drugs, what their side effects are, etc.) -- then monitoring. We learned what high and low numbers look like, what are some symptoms, what to be aiming for (which depended on whether you were on meds or not), and what influences the numbers.
Talked about how to self-monitor, and that it's all about patterns -- taking your post-prandial numbers all the time isn't all that useful unless you take your before-meal number too, so you can see what the difference is, for instance. Interestingly, she suggested we (no meds, or just Metformin) take pre-and post- prandials for one meal one day, then another a few days later, to see what's going on when we eat. For those who are on other meds that affect pancreas and insulin, they should do pre-prandials primarily, to see what their baseline glucose is. Then we got our meters out and she went through how to use them in more detail. All in all, it was a very informative class. And the section on meds made me doubly glad that I'm not on any yet, and even more determined to push off the need for meds as long as humanly possible! |
Lost Another Marble, Not Many Left :)
Howdy, everyone.
I went for my longest jog this morning (5 miles). After the third mile, my pace dropped down dramatically. My personal trainer was keeping pace with me and she was doing a fast walk. Doh! :o For the last mile, I really dug down and found the energy to up my pace and finish strong. After some stretching and ab exercises, I went home to shower and see my doctor for a physical. So I walk in, check in, write a check for my co-pay, and wait while the receptionist gets done with her call. She greets me and comments that I'm early. I'm thinking to myself, "well, yeah, my appointment is at 11 and it's 10:45." She then says, "I hope you brought a book, your appointment is at 2." :?: Dang, I was hoping to postpone senility until later in life. Oh, well, at least I get to take my dad out to lunch today and then I'll go back in for my physical. :D |
I have no idea what happened to me last night. My BSL was 6.7 when I went to sleep around 11pm. I woke up at quarter to 3 in the morning and felt ill. My blood sugar was 6.4 and was physically sick but only a very small amount.
My BSL was 17.2 when I woke up at 7:30 this morning. :( No breakfast until it goes right down! Scrambled eggs for breakfast/brunch/lunch methinks! |

Mine was too high this am too, 179. Ahh!
Was good most of yesterday. Think I'll get some diabetic bars for night. |
Snowy Wonderland In May
Started fasting last night at 8 in preparation for a blood test this morning. Woke up to a snow covered world this morning. I'm glad I put off planting the garden until June. I have 2 new peach trees that I moved into the garage last night. Still need to get them planted. Went to the lab first thing this morning and gave them blood and urine. I didn't realize that my doctor's appointment yesterday was for a diabetes check-up. I was suppose to get both tests done yesterday, but I had just eaten lunch and I didn't have the urge to pee. Hope everyone is having a warmer day than me. ;) This morning's FBG was 89.

cassandra, I wonder if you might be getting sick, infections will up your glucose too.
Stuck to my woe today, in spite of working half the night. Am making a healthy supper now, and baking another dish to have for snacks, or tomorrow's breakfast etc. just in case. Trying to do better with having food ready to go so I can stick to plan. fasting 4.8, post meals 5.8 and 6.2 today. |

My doc discouraged metformin as she felt it might impede weight loss, but agreed to give a trial for next 3 months. I am still losing weight, slowly, but it took 4 months to lose 11 pounds before, so I am not expecting anything really fast, and I did regain a bit in early April after my mother died and I was able to lose that 3 pounds just fine. So I can't say its affecting weight loss so far, and I haven't had a high sugar since I started it, even when I have had a few extra carbs, though I haven't exactly challenged myself. So, I don't want to discourage your excellent lifestyle changes so far, but to let you know that for some of us, the metformin is a good tool to add to those lifestyle changes to ensure we stay of track. I am really proud of you and what you have accomplished so far, and hope that you have great success. Its wonderful that your classes have been helpful to you as well. |
Went to bed last night with a 6.4 and woke up with a 4.3 ^___^
Pretty happy with that! I am going to go to my favourite cafe (I call it "The Orange Place" because they have these lovely orange curtains!) today for lunch. I am praying that today is Leek & Potato soup day! lol They make the most scrummy leek and potato soup! ^___^ I usually have a ham and cheese sandwich on brown bread alongside it :) |
hooray
Its weigh in morning, and I am happy to report that I have accomplished my first mini-goal, I weigh in at 173. This is the weight I was at a little over 18 years ago when I gave birth to daughter number 2. Until a couple of years ago, that was my all time high, and it was painful to me to go above that. So I have removed enough of my excess weight to be back to 173. Of course, I won't get the added bonus of pushing a lot of it out and giving it a name!
I got back down to 140 in 2 months after that birth, but I expect that to take a lest 6 months, although given how slow my weight loss has been so far, it may bo more like a year. Its taken 5 months to do this much. Yes, I had a setback when Mum died, but difficult times and set backs are just part of life and will be likely to happen again. Anyhow, thats that advantage of slower weight loss and taking time to lose it, we learn how to eat right even when life hits us, right? Have definitely been noticing some clothes feeling a bit looser. Hmm, how to celebrate? I think its time for a new bra! The girls deserve it. Yes, my bras have been getting looser, I am now on the smallest set of hooks, so that is 1 inch around my chest gone without a cup size change! wahoo:carrot: |
Congratulations, Mad! That's terrific. I can't imagine a loose bra but I guess it will happen.
Rather stressed these days for many reasons, none of them under my control, but BGL has been stable and so has the weight. :( I'm still not eating enough veggies. I need a "mother" to insist I eat them. Busy day ahead so I need to get breakfast into me and crank up my energy. |
Congrats, Fatmad. :bravo: You deserve to celebrate.
Today's FBG was 109. WTF?! :?: I had turkey meatball wraps last night for dinner with zero calorie sugar-free Sobe. I may have to experiment with the Sobe drink and see if I'm sensitive to the sugar substitute. The low carb tortillas I used are something I have used in the past without adverse spikes. Oh well, learn something new everyday. It's Chilly Willy outside today. Got below freezing last night and it's maybe 30 F outside right now. |
MR. Z ~ WOW, we had warmer weather than you today -- in the 70's F with a little breeze and some clouds moved in over the day (good thing or it would have been in the 80's I think). Now it looks like :rain: is on the way ... Did the meatballs have bread crumbs in them or sugar in the sauce?
RUTH ~ :drill: Eat your veggies! And that's an order ...:drill: It's not mom, but close ... How 'bout a good bowl of veggie soup for lunch or a small glass of V-8 when in a pinch? CASANDRA ~ I agree with SYNGER; I know that you have a different kind of diabetes than us, but I really think those high morning numbers are a sign that you need to have an evening snack. That very thing used to happen to me, so now I make sure to have a small evening snack to get me through the night ... MADELEINE ~ congrats on your mini-goal and a change in size in anything is another NSV worth celebrating; I have gone down in my bra sizes too -- sadly, both back and cup ... booohooo!!! :( But I won't be sad for but a moment, becuz I am just glad the scale is going down and loose clothes is a victory to me: meaning, I am toning down and getting smaller -- and that calls for a ... :carrot: YAAAHOOO! :carrot: We have been having lovely :sunny: for the last 3+ days and enjoyed that. Today, I did my floors, dust mopping, and vacuuming with my new cleaner. I found a great way to clean the sponge filter: I use my mini-electrolux and that works perfectly. Now I don't have to worry about having only one and how to clean it when I need it to do the rugs and floors. Problem solved by creativity ... ;) Did very well eating today and made a nice homemade turkey, veggie & rice soup ... yummy! Had fish, baked sweet potato fries, tomato, and coleslaw for dinner tonight. Doing better in this half of the week (since Tuesday). Hope you all have a FABULOUS FRIDAY tomorrow ... Rosebud :flow1: |
I usually have a bedtime snack (gummy bears) depending on what my blood sugar is. I am still working with my Diabetes team to try to adjust my insulin doses.
|
Today's FBG = 99. Hmmm, a little higher than normal, but I'll take it. Yesterday warmed up to the mid 50's F. I walked to the rec center for my neighborhood organization meeting. I had planned on taking a nice evening stroll after the meeting, but we did not end until 9:20 PM. Needless to say, I just went home, ate a quick chicken dinner, and hit the sack.
Rosebud - Now that I think about it, the turkey meatballs most likely had some bread crumbs in them. I didn't pour any sauce on my wraps. Just melted some cheese on them and threw in a bunch of fresh veggies. I'm going to kick myself out of the house today and make up for not taking my evening walk yesterday. When I get back, I've got to cut the grass and do some other chores. Have a great weekend everyone. |

the girls are happy
Yes, the new Bras fit nicely and feel great. I have been wearing one all day and so far very comfy.
Cassandra, why just gummy bears for a snack, what about a peanut butter sandwich on whole grain bread? (or half of one, with some milk or soymilk?) Something with protein fat and some carbs so it will burn slowly through the night and work well for you? can you fit something like that into your calorie allotment? That's what my neighbour is doing and he is doing quite well since then. I am enjoying my stable sugars and weight loss, but struggling a bit with some constipation. And yes, the metformin is making me gassy, but no extra BMs as a side effect. (sorry TMI alert) Lots of sun today, but wind too, which is making my allergies go a bit nuts. A friend wants to go for mexican food tonight, so I have to figure how to do atkins there....hmmm happy friday everyone |
:coffee2: Good morning. FBG = 93. I didn't get to cut the grass yesterday because it started to rain after I got home from my walk. I have to get it done today before it grows too much. I met my fellow team members for the marathon relay I'm in tomorrow. They're all really nice ladies. My leg of the race is the end (anchor man). I'm really nervous and a bit scared. This is the first ever race for me and I don't want to let my team down. You'd think that being the only fatty on the team, I'd get the shortest distance to run, but nooooo. Instead, I get the most visible and important part. I'm the one with the timing chip. If I don't carry it across the finish line, my team's times/distances won't count. The race starts at 6 AM and I plan on being at my starting point at 9 AM. Wish me luck, I'm gonna need it. :crossed:
