Default Different Forms Of Metformin

Hi Everyone

I was wondering if anyone knew the difference between the different forms of Metformin. I just got a new script and I noticed that this one says Meftormin HCL ER. i know the ER stands for extended release, my old script says XR which is the same as ER. What does the HCL mean. Is it any different will it do the same thing?

Thanks for any help
