Only for help sleeping - I use melatonin when I need help calming down at bedtime. I take a prescription for my fibromyalgia and anxiety symptoms, but the drugs for insomnia all caused weird reactions in me. Melatonin works directly and fast because it is a natural substance your body uses to induce sleep anyway. It won't knock you out or anything, but it does help yuo relax.

For issues like major depression and severe anxiety disorders, medication is usually advised in addition to therapy. But, it depends on person to person and case by case.
And I'm not quite sure about what you mean.........natural alternatives to what??? Depression? Mild? Moderate? Major? Suicidal? Psychotic? Disthymia? Others? It so depends.

Andrea, I've had huge problems with medications, have taken everything from paxil to lexapro. At the least 5 different meds. I just can not get through the two weeks it usually takes to get use to the stuff. I think I am "chemical challenged". Anyway after much research on the net found this natural anti- anxiety/ anti stress supplement called Anxietol 7. Been taking it for 2 months and going to order my next two months. It really has seemed to help me and the reviews on line for it are encourging as well. It does take a couple of weeks to start to feel the effect, but at least I didn't feel all loopy on the stuff and could focus at work, unlike the other meds. My doctor has even shared it with others who have had propblems with meds, (she's good about recommending natural alternatives). Might want to check it out. There are reviews for it on Amazon and the Bod e store. Hope all have had a good week...

If you are considering natural alternatives you need to talk to a professional in that field not just the guy down the street at the health food store. You can probably go online and find someone in your area who can help you. Also if you are considering natural alternatives you want to find someone who encapsulates (makes their own caps) with fresh herbs and not something that has been sitting on a shelf. Also if you have any other kind of health problems you need to let the herbologist know and keep your doctor informed of any herbs you may be taking since some can interfere with perscription meds. Your doctor wont be overly excited to hear your trying a natural alternative but if perscription meds arent working it cant hurt to try. What did people do before perscription meds? As a society in whole we are doing more harm to our bodies by wanting fast fixes and enjoying overly processed foods etc. Remember on a natural remedy it will not work as fast as a perscription so you must give it time. Alot of people are not keen on natural remedies but you do whats best for you. Good luck. Kimberly
