Depression

I've been steadily gaining weight over the past year and I've noticed that I've been so much more sad lately that I used to be. I'm dealing with terrible self-esteem issues and have a crying fit at least every other day- sometimes multiple times a day, depending on what I'm doing (like trying to find SOMETHING that still fits and failing or having to see awful pictures I was tagged in). So, I'm trying to be a better me and hoping it makes a happier me.

masterptr 10-02-2012 06:12 PM

walking works for me too!
I can walk many many miles except today I only did 3.5 miles because of PMS...
I felt sooooo tired ...
:)
tomorrow looks brighter already.

Depressed and powerless

I've never joined a support group, but then again I've never lost my weight. I feel like it defines me. Because I believe that I know the way to solve the problem and more or less choose not to. My age- the menapause etc.. Has made it harder than ever. The effort I spend on my face, concerning age doesn't parallel any effort towards making my body healthy and I notice that men are not as concerned about some laugh lines as they are about rolls of fat and lack of muscle tone. My marriage takes a hit in the bedroom my depression rules the day and I've just washed down my pepperidge farm raspberry turnover with ice cream and a Vicodin and a melatonin so I can sleep.
At some point today I was sure that I was going to get up at 6am and go try body pump at the gym, now I know it will be 9 and ill be drinking coffee and trying to convince myself to get out of bed.
My marriage needs help but I've lost my power, if I can't regain my health and get to a reasonable body weight, I don't think I can do anything.
I'm not 100lbs overweight but I'm 50lbs for a lot of years. Lot-
Why am I powerless. Why do I feel so exhausted at the mention of fitness.
Help

meandu 11-17-2012 09:57 AM

I don't know how much fun this is but I use a peddler which I purchased for under $36.00. It is good because I can use it anytime I feel the need of a bit of exercise. I also try to get outside for a walk at least 2 a week.(weather permitting in winter). As for diet pills, well, I don't know about putting chemicals into my body that are going to cause more harm than good.

shanaqua24 12-05-2012 09:40 AM

I know how you all feel.

I'm tired of being fat, sad, and lonely. I'm a real person... I'm tired of hearing how I have a pretty face... What about the rest of me? Sorry, guys needed to say it out loud or write it. For the past 4 years my life has not been where I wanted it to be, and today I'm taking control. I've always been a positive person on the outside, but inside I'm sad, lonely, scared and I feel like ****...

Through many sleepless nights I searched for natural supplements to help with my mood and energy level, and I've found 2 natural supplements, Spirulina and 5-HTP. I started taking Spirulina a week ago, and it is working for me. I'm not drowsy any more at work or before the gym. I take one with ever meal along with my KLBs. 5-Htp is a mood enhancer and you take it before bed, and you sleep the depression away, you wake up the next morning with a positive outlook. Google 5-HTP for more information. I bought my Spirulina and 5-HTP at Whole Foods on Lavista Rd in Decatur GA.

I hope this help someone with their depression and energy.

Is anyone here on Zoloft (or Sertraline, the generic)? I just started taking it again after a hiatus. I lost weight when I was on it the first time, but I don't think it was related to the medicine. I think it was moreso that I was in my final year of law school and running myself ragged/often forgetting to eat because I was so busy. I'm just wondering if y'all have any experiences to share as far as whether it makes you lose or gain. I'm on 50 mg/day if that helps.

meandu 02-24-2013 09:12 AM

It is funny that I know that I need to exercise for both weight reduction and to ease depression but somehow I am unable to get myself into a regular routine.

Karalopez 03-11-2013 08:22 AM

I agree, as far as I know about exercise it makes my day perfect and active, I can use my brain effectively in all my works.

mojorestoration 09-08-2013 02:55 PM

Not so long ago, I was quite fit...not that I've gotten out of shape, I find I'm almost more depressed when I exercise! I know I will get back in shape eventually and exercise will make my happy again like it used to...

pattydunn28 11-10-2013 11:40 AM

I go to the gym in patterns and get very fustrated when I break the cycle because then I find it very hard to get back there and alot of it is the overwelming confuusing information that I get about what to do at the gym. I wish I could get some feed back on introductory excercise plans that actual people have had results with

meandu 11-16-2013 12:51 PM

It is very difficult to get into the swing of things when you have left yourself go. I do find that if I make the time to exercise even for a few brief periods during the day I start to feel better about life.

technoel 01-13-2014 10:09 AM

Try just walking around the block. The important thing us to start moving. Once you do this, your mind and body will start to adapt. Try walking a little more each time so that your body keeps being pushes out of its comfort zone. Eventually, you will find more fun activities to lose weight. Good luck!

Hello everyone. It has been awhile since I have been on this site. I have been going through some family problems and with that my depression kicked back in. It is funny how quickly I can stop exercising when I become emotional. All I want to do is sit and cry. Hopefully I can soon put all this behind me.

eightiesbabe84 10-22-2014 03:02 PM

It's not easy to make yourself get up and take a shower in the throws of a deep depression...exercise? really? I am barely able to stay working much less exercise. I am serious, how do make yourself get up and exercise if you cant even force yourself to get up and take a shower? I am talking about full out bed bound depression with exhaustion, its only a matter of time before I have to quit my job.

triumphhcg 04-09-2015 03:54 AM

If you are depressed due to obesity, there are ways in which you can shed your excess pounds. One of the effective and the most cheapest method to cut down your excess fat from the body is to walk daily in the morning. All of us know that you can only lose weight when you consume less calories than you burn. Walking first thing in the morning increases your metabolism. With increased metabolism, you burn more calories throughout the day.
Water is another great weight loss regime. Drinking a big glass of water before your exercise is a good way to lose your weight. To boost your metabolism and maximize the body's fat burning capabilities, you need to drink a big glass of water when you first wake up and exercise for 30 minutes. After moderate exercise, again drink a glass of water . Wait for 30 minutes and then have your breakfast.

I couldn't disagree more with the above. Bodies are different - for mine, exercising without being properly fuelled - with carbs too! - is a catastrophe. It makes me feel absolutely terrible for the rest of the day, and hungry!

Also, morning would be a terrible time for me to exercise. It doesn't really have to be in the morning - the body burns calories in sleep too so it doesn't really matter if you get the metabolism boost during the day or night.

--

Generally, I think healthy scepticism should be had with the "exercise makes you less depressed" -mantra. I used to believe this and started jogging/running. I was too tired to live, I basically didn't live at all, just run, run, run, dozens of kilometers per week, running from my depression. Eventually I was in great shape and more depressed than ever.

Now with years of therapy and the right medication - I can exercise, and actually enjoy it, and feel it boost my confidence etc. (But not in the mornings for me!)

I've had depression for years, and all that happens is that I binge eat, feel guilty, stop eating, and have no motivation to get out of bed, much less excercise. I end up gaining weight and feeling more depressed. I'm hoping to stop that now, and break out of that cycle now:).

ShinyHappySkinny 02-09-2016 04:31 AM

Yup, there's a reason I have been starting to get so depressed again.. Things are piling up and I'm feeling like I can't stay on top of it all. Whenever I'm exercising regularly I feel more motivated and more able to get things done again. Just need to do it now! It's really only hardest getting started!

weightlossjourneyguy 02-27-2016 03:20 PM

I often have to force myself to exercise. It's strange, it seems exercise helps depression but I'm often to depressed to exercise.

Just this past week I was so bad that I could not get out of bed for three days. I called out sick from work on day 1 and the other two I couldn't even find it in me to pick up the phone and call again. I have been slowly regaining my desire to live life, and would like to try getting some exercise. I keep thinking about it, but can't seem to find it in me to actually get up and get moving. Has anyone else been through this? Might anyone have any advice on moving past your depression and exercising? Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks helping me feel like I'm not alone. :-)

Don't have motivation to exercise

I have been in a slump for the past month. I don't seem to have the energy or motivation to exercise. My goal this month was to lose 6.5lbs for a contest I entered and I think I gained 6.5lbs instead.

Part of the reason I'm in a slump is because I'm a single mom (however I do have a boyfriend) and I don't get regular breaks to do much. My daughter sees her dad every second weekend and usually by that time, I'm so exhausted and the last thing I want to do is exercise. I love my daughter and boyfriend and I am blessed to have the life I have. I'm just disappointed in myself because I've gained 17 lbs since last summer. I don't fit into any clothes and I feel like a beluga when I go to the lake. It's hard to feel good about myself when u feel so enormous.

Has anyone else been in a slump like this and how did u get out of it?

mmmbop 02-11-2018 02:49 PM

How long until you started noticing a change in your mood from exercising? I started a workout routine in November. I was hoping I would notice a change in mood by now.

HealthWarrior 06-05-2018 09:57 PM

Exercise certainly saved me from my "depression days" in my mid-20's. I actually found it to be, in itself, a kind of "drug" though. I became addicted to the good vibes. But in the end it was nutrition that saved me from the medication. Exercise is taxing on the body - a type of stress that burns out key hormones that are required to produce serotonin! Yes, exercise is certainly necessary, but I encourage people to look at what fuels your body (and your exercise) BEFORE focusing on exercise. You are what you eat, after all :) If medication is necessary, I would certainly have a discussion with my doctor about what food types are proven to help alleviate depression. If they don't know, choose another doctor as they can't use Google very well...

sandrajrwilliams 07-31-2018 12:25 PM

Obviously, every kinds of exercise reduce the stress. it also helps you to maintain your weight. For quicker results, people also take pills.

Can I ask for advice for a person, who is too shy to go to the gym?
She can't exercise at home, since she doesn't have a proper equipment and a free space for this. And I don't know, how to encourage her.
upd: she signed up after all and now she's working with a personal trainer

samanthasteven 10-10-2018 07:28 AM

I lost about 8kgs in two months just by walking for 1 hour daily along with portion control.

annywhite 12-17-2018 01:24 PM

Does supplement help boost exercise impact on weight loss?

I love this post. Very helpful.
Do you have any prove to show that supplements help for an effective exercise.

JLife18 12-18-2018 01:57 AM

Maybe start with some basic calisthenics (pushups, jumping jacks, etc.) make a routine

Example:

10 pushups
20 jumping jacks
15 squats
25 situps

This could be a good start

C_E_UofU 04-23-2019 12:43 PM

I like what @jlife said. Just make a good habit of simple thing till it doesn't feel like it requires effort. Like showering or brushing your teeth, just make it a part of the routine and it won't be hard to do.

ilovepomegranate 05-04-2019 10:18 AM

I find that the most useful way to lose weight is just to start with something your body can handle at first. I for instance dealt with anxiety myself and just forced myself to go to the gym. I go with my husband about 2 times a week and have noticed that I look forward to the impact it has on my life. The first step is just to start, the second step is to make sure you only do what your body can handle. In other words go slow, if you can only handle a 15 minute walk for the first few weeks that is perfectly fine :) A month later you can start increasing the amount of walking to 30 minutes per gym session etc.

Your body is strong, adaptable to change, and you can reach your full potential! you can do this!

ChickieBoom 06-10-2019 02:28 PM

I noticed the effect on my mood right away. That's not to say that I don't have bad days but they're certainly not as bad as they would be without exercise. There are days that I might cry at the gym while I'm working out but I know it would be worse if I didn't work out. I know this because I can compare how I feel to the days when I don't work out at all.

It's a process and it takes time. Each day gets a little easier and then I might have a really bad day but it's small steps forward.

shellofself 07-16-2019 10:48 AM

I didn't notice the effects of "working out" until I started eating better AND sleeping better. But I think having the mind-set of "baby steps" goes a long way.

For example:
  • Move. You don't need a gym membership to start working out. Walk around your house or the neighborhood. Follow along to free workout videos for beginners on Amazon. That's how I initially lost weight (285 to 240lbs).
  • Eat better. You don't need to eat salads for every meal or only consume 1,300 calories a day. Find out how many calories you're taking in, and slightly reduce it. When you get fast food, practice some self-control. I.e., If you go to McDonalds, don't buy the large Big Mac meal with an extra side of nuggets... instead, get the medium fries and toss out the third slice of bread that comes with the Big Mac ;)
  • Sleep. Go to sleep by 9pm. It'll keep you from night-binging, and you'll feel more rested in the morning (assuming you don't sleep in lol).
Thinking "baby steps" every step of the way also keeps me from beating up on myself when things don't go as planned or I slip up. That way when the inevitable happens, my anxiety and depression don't spiral. :) You got this. You're not alone on this journey.

fitnessfreak2019 08-04-2019 01:17 PM

I have tried supplements but to be honest it comes down to 3 things: 1) Consistency in exercise 2) Know what you are eating 3) Get support from professional coaching.

Zanaida 03-30-2020 03:50 PM

I have been trying to gather inspiration to do a regular exercise routine. I just could seem to follow through it.

michael9 05-11-2020 10:33 PM

Loosing weight requires discipline, I must say
