Default New to the depression game...

Hi guys and gals-

Well after many years of going un treated for my depression, which was by choice, i have finally accepted that pills may be the only answer to making me feel better, so next week i have an appointment.
My question for you is that after you started taking pills did you start to get back to your old you, and finally have the energy and motivation to start working out, and want to get off your butt and do something?
With me i have zero motivation, let alone energy to do anything, so i'm hoping to really get that back and start moving my butt...

Thanks!

I resisted medication for years. But, finally realized I had to do something or I was going to end up in divorce and all kinds of bad things. I take effexor, it changed my life. I am still the same person, but now I have control. I don't cry, I don't fly off the handle and rage with little or seemingly no provocation. I am a believer that taking a medication to correct a chemical imbalance is a right thing to do. Nay sayers, are people who have never been there. It is similar to taking any drug to correct something that is not working right in your body. I have hypothyroidism, so I take synthroid to correct that. I have a tendency to have low iron, so I take a daily iron pill and a multivitamin. At times I feel funny taking so many pills, but, but on the other hand I have come to the conclusion that it is more wrong not to take them if they can cause such a huge improvement in your life.
In answer to the motivation question. It took a few weeks for the effexor to really start having a noticable effect. Then I started feeling, better and more positive about EVERYTHING. The positive attitude is the real motivator.

Great response Susie!

I agree with everything she said

I'm on Prozac, and it took about 2-3 weeks for it to really get into my system and start working. The first week was a little hard for me, kinda like I thought that once the pill went down my throat the depression would go away, and when it didn't I got a little more depressed than usual. I hope this won't happen to you, but if does, bear it out until your body can normalize the meds. It did get better

About week 3 I started noticing that I didn't want to just sit around doing nothing. For me, it started with cleaning my house Then, I noticed my dog staring woefully at me and thought she might like a walk. Slowly but surely, I found that my activity level increased. I started taking vitamins regularly (why is it that depression seems to keep people from doing the little things like exercise and taking a vitamin that would actually help ease the depression) and walking my dog, and actually cooking healthy food, instead of popping whatever was frozen in the mic.

I don't know if I'm the same me I was before the depression took over - truth is I put off getting help for so many years I don't really have a clear memory of the me p.d. (pre-depresision). I am happier now with myself than I've been in a long time, and thats good enough for me.

I'm glad you are getting help Make sure to ask your doc all the questions you have, thats what he/she is there for
