I have a form of bipolar disorder. I don't think there is a certain diet in particular to avoid. You need to find what works for you. Many with mental disorders such as that find that cutting out certain foods help in the long run. Cutting out things like white bread, sugars, caffeine, etc. I have done this and mainly for the psychological effects. It has helped my anxiety disorders that I have also.

I have BP II, I find if I eat well my mood swings are less erratic, however other symptoms don’t always disappear as I would like them too.
I am still in the early days of controlling my BP with diet but I am hoping I will over time see a significant change!

Anna, anytime you are having that severe of mood swings, whether they are related to hormones or possibly brain chemistry, you should definitely discuss them with your doctor. Also when they are affecting your life in such a way.

There is much hope!!!!
Dear Anna,
After reading what you have written, it sure sounds like bipolar illness to me. I feel sad regarding your suffering. I'm so glad that you are seeing a Dr. soon!! I pray that he will give you the help that you need.
I have bipolar illness myself, but I have been able to lose the 40 lbs I needed to, and have KEPT it off!! Yay!!!
I take my medications as prescribed, and live an active, productive life; for which I am deeply grateful. I am a wife of 23 years, a mother to five children, and a certified personal trainer. Bipolar illness doesn't have to be a horrible sentence. There is much help available to someone who is humble enough to receive it!
I wish you the very best of help, Anna!!!
With loving friendship,
Diana

Anxiety
P.S. Anxiety WAS, indeed, a part of my bipolar disorder. Again, help is available. YOU GO GIRL!!!!!!

I have not had any suicidal thoughts now since December and this week is probably the first week I have felt really good and positive about the future.
I am hoping over time with the BP that the change in my diet will do me the world of good, of course it’s all trial and error.

Dear Moosegirl,
I feel happy for you!!! Yay!!!
I wish you the very best!

From what I've read (and I'm not a doctor) is that sometimes panic attacks are part of the bipolar disorder and not a singular disorder in itself. Meaning that treatment for bipolar disorder (if your doctor finds that you do have this) could help immensely with the panic attacks.

Thanks Bassetbabe! This was sure true for me!!!

Anna, did you get to talk to your doctor yet about the suicidal thoughts? you really should report this to him/her ASAP....even if its just over the phone, tell some one in the office.
