Seroquel is wreaking havoc on my weight

  • At the end of June I was down to 132 from 144. I'm now back up to 142 as of today at the gym. I hadn't been eating the best the last couple weeks, but gaining basically a pound a day sounds mighty excessive. I discussed this with my psych on Tuesday and for now they wanna keep me on it. Said that it is a side effect that usually goes away after a few weeks. I hope to HE*L he's right. I go back in a month and he said if I'm still having the weight problems with it, he'll either change the dose or put me on something else. I'm getting my eating habits back under control. Keeping my fingers crossed that this subsides SOON!!!!!
  • Ugh !!! Seroquil made me so ill I had to stop it after just two doses. Just use it in case of emergency. Is it working for your depression ??? Side effects are the worst but when you are trying to lose weight and it makes you gain - that must be SO frustrating !! Hope you get it straightened out soon.
  • Actually I'm on it for my bi-polar. Its doing ok. I'm seriously missing my lithium. I was having some major problems about a month ago, so my psych dropped all my meds (was on lithium, anafranil, and topamax) and put me only on seroquel. I think just the anafranil needed stopped. If I still have this problem in a month I'm gonna beg to have my lithium back, I think it did well. And trust me, this is frustrating and depressing as heck, not helping my depressive part of bi-polar at all.
  • Gosh, this must be horrible for you - I have certainly had my fair share of medication issues (including one that turned me into a monster for months before I finally came off it), but this has NOT been my experience with Seroquel, sorry to say. It saved my life.

I also credit Seroquel with being the boost my weight loss needed - I don't think I could have done it without it. I take 200mg every evening.

I hope it works out for you, and soon

    Heather
  • I found this searching under seraquel. I've been using it for about 6 months, 200 mg a night, and I gained weight. It seems to have come to a stand still ( i don't have a scale ). I'm not sure if it is the seraquel that is causing me to not be able to drop an ounce or what.

I eat ok, but it seems like I have to do a **** of a lot more than someone not taking this to get some change in my figure/weight.

    I take it for bipolar.

For the last 2-3 weeks I've had an almost constant headache and intermittent wicked sweating. These sound like side effects, but can someone get side effects after taking it for so long??
    Argh.
I also take wellbutrin and birth control pills.

It's hard to think a pill is what is causing me to gain weight. I feel like that's a cop out excuse but it seems that way...

I'm sorry for hte less than supportive reply, but I'm kind of in the same boat you are, I'm just bigger than you. Sometimes I wonder if being fat is a decent trade off for being sane in the brain. It's like taking one thing and replacing it with another....
  • Well, after weighing in at 145 last Tuesday (I've never weighed that much in my life!) I called my doc and he ok'd me to go off of it. Wouldn't prescribe anything new over the phone. I have an appt with him in 3 weeks, he said to call if I have any problems before then. Now my hubby has me hitting the gym daily and he is even going on a diet with me WOOHOO~!!!
  • I know I am real late on this but PLEASE DO NOT TAKE SEROQUEL. Seroquel is the reason I gained weight myself. Please, you are so lucky you got off of it real quick. I wouldn't be in this situation I am in now if it weren't for Seroquel. I gained soooo much weight within two months. Glad you are off of it.
