Depression and eating

  • I have always heard of people who dont eat when they are depressed or upset. Im the complete opposite. I eat if Im tired, bored, angry, upset, depressed, whatever! Does anyone else have this same problem?
  • Yes! I asked my psychologist about this and she said many people gain weight when depressed. Normally, it's people who tend to gain weight anyway. Also, many of the depression meds have a side effect of weight gain so it can be twice as bad. You're not alone.
  • The dr claimed cymbalta would help with my mania (extreme highs and lows) and overeating. Nothing yet and its been 2 weeks.
  • Every person is different, so the depression will affect each individual differently. In my case, I tend to eat a lot more when I'm depressed. I know others who won't eat anything at all. The same goes with medication side effects, like overeating. Zoloft has caused some people to gain large amounts of weight but it hasn't affected me at all.
  • I'm the same way. Medication only made it worse- I just didn't give a damn if I gained weight, since I didn't give a damn about anything else. Comfort eating is a really tough thing to conquer, so you're not alone.
