I have a good feeling I'll be there in the next day or so. Adding more lifting sessions into my exercise regime has gotten my weight moving again. The cardio may have been too much. Yay for dummies lifting heavy dumbbells!

Photochick - What is our DEAL??

FB - Tell us more. What did you change that you are seeing results? These 160's are killing me and I'm about to try anything to get under that 160 mark!

FB 10-20-2008 10:32 AM

JamieJo - I've been focusing waywayway more on cardio lately than weights. In the past month my weight was stuck and correspondingly I was only weight training once a week, feeling lazy, trainer being busy, blah.

I upped my strength training last week back to 3 times, where I'm usually at, and the weight came off with surprising ease. I still did my cardio at 6 days - as usual - but I strongly feel that the weights were the contributing factor as nothing else changed.

In all likelihood it's just the extra calories I burned - but still - I really think weights help me, especially because your body tends to keep burning after a weights session whereas with cardio you don't get that afterburn. I guess it just refueled the fire. I dunno. I surely wish I could figure out the f$%# mystery that my body is! I'd be a rich mad scientist!

I know it sucks to be stuck, gawd does it suck! The important thing is just to trudge on - what you're doing. The 150's will be there soon, you've been bouncing right on the very edge (which has to make it 21756531746 times more frustrating).

JamieJo 10-20-2008 10:41 AM

What do you do for cardio and for weights?

Heya Jamie...

Cardio varies - mostly at the gym lately (I've had too many near misses with creeps on the bike trail lately). So elliptical, stairmaster, stairmill and rowing for the most part. I make a rule for myself of 45 minutes minimum, but often go over.

Weights - I also do this at the gym. I mostly work with free weights and hit various body parts on no set schedule, I usually aim for 3x per week - but I've been a lazy girl this past month. Thursday was lower body, yesterday was biceps, today will likely be back and shoulders with the trainer. These sessions, with my trainer or by myself generally take an hour or less. I tend to lift heavy, between 4-12 reps (depending) for several sets.

I'm not sure exactly what information you'd like on weights - but am totally happy to share whatever I know, do. So just ask!

If you'd like more information on particular moves with the weights I think bodybuilding.com has a fabulous library...
http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/exercises.htm

Weights rock my world! I used to be scared I'd bulk up all crazy by lifting so heavy- I was a fool! Not only is it a great workout, my body is becoming ultra-sleek and sexy, I'm smaller than I ever was weighing 20 pounds less. By doing something that's so stereotypically masculine I'm becoming more feminine looking that I ever have.

JamieJo 10-20-2008 11:14 AM

I don't go to a gym. I have a treadmill and weight bench at home. Since I started 3FC I've been doing the C25K program. Today is day one of week 5. But I usually do what is required for the program and then stay on the treadmil until at least 45 mins. I have 8 pound weights where I do little curls and the arm behind the back deal while continuing to walk at about 3.5MPH. 3 sets of each, but that is about it for my working out (which is a lot more then I used to do!) Then I do a 10 incline for as long as I can go. BUT I haven't had any real weight loss yet and am getting pretty frustrated. I know I need to do better on food but am doing much better then I was before I started 3FC.

Thanks for the website! I'm going to check it out!

FB 10-20-2008 11:18 AM

Jamie - congrats on adding the exercise to your routine, that is fabulous! It sounds like you're doing a great job and I think C25K is a great program.

I do think though, for me at least, that weight loss is 95% diet. I am by no means downplaying exercise (as you can see I devote a lot of time to it, this month at over 2000 minutes so far) but honestly feel it comes down to calories in the end. What are you doing for food? Do you keep track of calories or follow a specific plan?

PS - that photo of your baby with the big moon eyes always melts my heart. Reminds me of my little guy at that age, he still has big moon eyes at 4 :) . And I always wish I could do your baby's portrait when I see your avatar, such a cutie (I'm a photographer, not a random creep ;) ).

JamieJo 10-20-2008 11:28 AM

I count Weight Watcher points. I don't go to meetings or anything but I know how to count points. For me, it's easier then counting calories. (I did WW once before I had my baby girl and got down to where I wanted to be. When I went back to WW after I had her, it just wasn't the same and I didn't see paying for the meetings anymore.) I do pretty good during the week and typically fall off the wagon on the weekends. And sometimes I'm more frustrated, just with myself, that I only want to loose like 25 pounds. So many people on here have lost WAY WAY more weight then that...Why can't I just loose 25 little pounds??? :)

What do you do for diet?

Thanks for the comment on Kendalyn. She is 16 months old and a cutie! Being a kid's photographer would be awesome!

I'll be quick on the food, running out the door in a minute. Please though, if you want further clarification just ask, I'll be working at the computer the rest of the day and am usually logged in for diversion!

I read through goal stories of people who had lost huge amounts of weight, staggering amounts - like I needed to and devised my own plan.

Firstly, I count calories with the help of The Daily Plate (counting calories and points is somewhat similar). Secondly, I focus on lean proteins at every meal (poultry, seafood) and also less carbs. Not much bread, pasta, rice, potatoes, sugar - my only rule really is to avoid white food. I don't consider myself low carb because I don't count them, they just come from their natural state like vegetables, legumes, fruit, grain.

When I got into the weights I was advised to add more protein, so that crowded out some fruit and grains (I still eat them, not as much). A typical meal would be chicken breast (or two) served on a huge bed of lettuce with a ton of veggies, some cheese.

I also eat small meals and snacks, 6 times a day or so.

I'm interested in being satiated, not starving - so I try to fill up on veggies. I easily eat enough vegetables a day to feed a family. I always have the choice of blowing my calories on chocolate or pizza, but honestly I'm not into being hungry and therefore avoid it. I want the most food I can get for my calorie budget (which is appx 1500 at the moment).

Yes, people here have lost terrific amounts of weight, but you know what? Even more have joined and never done it (just look at my original join date compared to my diet start date of 01/01/08).

The big deal with you is that you're sticking with this despite the scale. That's a bigger accomplishment than losing weight right off the bat, you're not giving up, disappearing. You will lose your 25 pounds too, you're here, you're doing it! You just have to find, tweak and perfect what works for you.
