I've finally started to get my health under control for the first time since October--long story short, I was finally diagnosed with Hashimoto's Thyroiditis and horrible allergies (I was diagnosed with strep throat 8 times this year, and it turns out my allergies were so horrendous they would trip a false positive on strep tests).
I'm also a compulsive overeater and I haven't been able to go to meetings because of exhaustion. I will be starting meetings again on Saturday.
I gained back about 20 pounds (I'm at 191 right now).
I am just having a hard time controlling my eating. I'm now eating gluten free and that helps with bloating, tummy pain, and nausea. I haven't needed phenergan in weeks, which is awesome because I also have IBS (dude, it just gets better and better, right???)
I picked up this book today: http://www.amazon.com/Dr-Gotts-Flour...8541447&sr=1-1
I think it looks very doable for me, and I'm hoping it will help reduce cravings. Has anyone tried it? I've already planned out some meals and I think it will be good for me. I tend to eat very healthy, just too much of it. I take several vitamins/supplements as well.
I haven't read that book, or heard of it. I've hear of Hashimoto's Disease (Thyroiditis), and sympathize with you. Not being able to lose the weight as quickly as most people due to your condition must be tough. The things that afflict you will surely get better as you cut out flour, sugar, and refined carbs.
I believe this 100%.
If you exercise more, the thyroid condition symptoms will lessen. I feel like I suffer from a low range of thyroid function, but I'm not sure if anything is wrong with me, since I haven't seen a doctor for testing. I don't have insurance either, so I'm just dealing with the issues by exercising every day and cutting out the flour, sugar, refined carbs, to the best of my ability. Eating at least 5 servings of fresh raw fruits and veggies also helps.
Colorful natural foods helps.
I'm noticing an improvement in my overall health.
One's diet has MUCH to do with one's health. Change it for the better.
I've never read the book, but I've been eating like this for almost 3 yrs. on my own. I eat no food that is white, even starchy veggies. I live on fruit, veggies, fish, any lean protein( no red meat), nuts & yogurt. It takes awhile, but cravings for refined sugar & white flour will go away, you won't even want it anymore. Keep us posted!
Thanks--today is going well so far. The only sugar I've had is one tsp of honey in my oatmeal. I'm going to wean that down too. I can't eat artificial sweeteners due to my IBS, but I think I can do it. Maybe I'll add an apple to it instead.
Avoiding processed foods seems to have reduced my hunger and cravings. I especially avoid things like white bread and everything with corn syrup in it. I'm not totally sugar free or gluten free or even artificial sweetener free, but there seems to be a pretty direct relationship for me - the more whole foods I eat (as a percentage of total) the more satiated and healthy my body feels so that diet makes sense... Looking forward to hear how it's working for you.
I'm using fitday to keep a food log and recently I noticed I'm always low in magnesium and iffy on the calcium so I added that to my multi routine and the energy has def improved!
I'm also trying to skip the sugar/flour in an effort to lower carbs for my PCOS/IR.
Third day so far! It was hard last night because I really wanted something sugary. I drank some water and went to bed. Hopefully the worst of the cravings will end in a few days.
I've done it for a week now and the cravings are much better--went out with my mom last night and made good choices. I'm sure the salad dressing
I had with the salad had sugar in it, but I only dipped my fork in it instead of pouring it on my salad.
I am going to try putting a scoop of soy protein powder in my oatmeal tomorrow to try and stay fuller longer--I don't like to cook each morning and during the school year it's not an option so I think doctoring my oatmeal will be the way to go. I found one with no added sugar and we'll see how that goes.
