Thumbs up Wake up, eat, back to sleep?

So I have a lot of trouble sleeping. Honestly its often because some noise wakes me up or my cat trying to get my attention at 3 am...anyhow...i am like really tired and out of it and i'll just get up and eat something with like little to no self control and than go back to bed...than in the morning i wake up and hate myself bc it ruined my whole days worth of good eating...and i am eating enough in fact i havent lost any weight in a week and a half bc ive been eating more! =( ugh. does anyone have any suggestions?

by the way my cat paws at my door if i dont let him in so i dont know WHAT to do about the fact he wakes me so often =( lol little bugger.

OMG! We are TWINS. I have been doing the exact same thing for the past couple of weeks! I usually don't eat that much, but it's always something and there's no call for it. I'm half asleep, not hungry and just wandering around my kitchen stuffing things in my mouth. I've been meaning to post about this myself! I did it last night I've still lost weight, but I'm betting I would have lost more if I hadn't been doing this.

Wish I had some suggestions, but I can't seem to control it either. The stupid thing is, this would be an easy binge to avoid because I'm so tired, if I went back to bed I'd fall right back to sleep!

Default me too

i have a hard time going to bed hungry. i don't mean that i'm starved its just that my tummy has to be FULL before i can sleep. i do 1200 calories a day and i don't get hungry often. last night i couldn't sleep but i waited til 12 so my new calorie count would start,,,crazy i know but my mind works like that. so i ate a little bowl of grilled chick and rice so i could sleep. i'm thinking about taking a benadryl or something to help me sleep when i get that hungry. i dunno!!! good luck girls,,,lets not give up!!!!!!!

Well I am glad I am not the only one having a hard time with this! The effed up thing is it even happens on nights when I have ate plenty. I think its got to be an emotional thing or something, like im so stressed/pissed from woke up i want to calm myself down and obviously whats more comforting than food...haha so i think thats why...i have tried sleeping pills to, and am now trying Melatonin ( a supplement my doc recommended) but so far idk no luck...not sure if this has to do more with the binge eating tendancies/emotional issues i need to deal with in order to sleep better and also I think if my emotions were in the right place I would be able to will myself to just not even get outta bed when Im woke up, right? just toss over and fall back asleep asap! haha. man i wish. maybe one of these days. until then its nice to know others relate and hopefully we can help each other out <3

I'm having the same issue, only it happens before I go to bed. I ruin my perfect healthy day right before I go to bed and I beat myself up about the next day. I'm sooo glad you posted this because you're not alone!!!!

For the groggy folks letting out their cats or dogs in the middle of the night...

Is a cat/dog door a possibility? This is the best solution bc that way your sleep won't be interrupted.

If not, I'd suggest you leave VLC snacks on the kitchen counters at night. I keep a pitcher of Crystal Light on hand. How about a pint of nice ripe cherry tomatoes... some grapes... a small bowl of air-popped corn? Get rid of any snacks you have hanging around that you automatically grab when letting out your pet.

It sounds very frustrating! Good luck finding a solution!!!

i had a girlfriend (a thin one at that) who ate in her sleep. seriously! she'd wake up in the morning and find empty bags of chips/plates of food, etc. next to her. luckily, she never seemed to put on any weight as a result of it, but it seems that maybe some people just want to eat in the middle of the night? its kinda spooky

Are you aware of what you are doing while you're doing it, but your defenses are down? Or do you only really remember it in the morning?

This article was in the NY TImes last month. You may need to register to read the whole thing, but here's an excerpt:
Sleep eaters “make a beeline for the kitchen” and tend to binge on sugary, high-calorie snacks, sometimes five times a night, said Dr. John W. Winkelman, medical director of the Sleep Health Center of Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Brighton, Mass. Some go for bizarre food combinations like peanut butter and pasta, and even the occasional nail polish or paper.

Consequences of nighttime eating can include injuries like black eyes from walking into a wall or hand cuts from a prep knife, or dental problems from gnawing on frozen food. On a deeper level, many sleep eaters feel depressed, frustrated and ashamed. Upwards of 10 percent of adults suffer from some sort of parasomnia, or sleep disorder, like sleepwalking or night terrors. Some have driven cars or performed inappropriate sexual acts — all while in a sleep-induced fog. About 1 percent, mostly women, raid the refrigerator.
I had a roommate once who did something like this. I got up once in the middle of the night to let my dog out and there she was in the kitchen eating a huge bowl of cereal. She was very health-conscious and didn't eat very much... I always figured it was her body's way of making sure she was getting enough calories.

If you aren't truly asleep, just lacking some willpower because you're out of it, how about tying your cabinets closed or something that would make it hard to get to the food? All the effort to get to it might get you out of your fog enough to help you change your mind.

OH my gosh I do the exact same thing!!! I don't go to bed until around 2am (I developed insomnia during my first pregnancy and it has never went away) and I'll fall asleep for a while and just wake up and wonder aimlessly around my kitchen stuffing anything I find in my mouth, even though I'm not hungry, then I go back to sleep! I feel horrible the next day, just like you!

I am now pregnant again, so it is double hard to try and stop this. Can you crate your cat so she will quit waking you up? I have told my husband NOT to let me eat at night, he feels bad, ecspecially because I'm preggo now, but he will nicely ask me, are you really hungry? Try stopping and thinking about it, but if you cant, maybe make up some baggies of low cal foods, like baby carrots and celery sticks, that you can open your fridge and grab that are low cal. I hope this helps some. You are not alone!!! Best wishes!!!

I tend to go to bed later so I don't usually get this, but if it's happening to you I would try to have healthy snacks out at all times to snack on instead of junk food. Good luck!
