Twist of fate...

  • So at a routine check up today with my ob (post-partum checkup) I was given a derpression screening of which I failed miserably... after going over my results my doctor highly advised begining a RX medication to help control my depression...

The twist of fate is this: the medication she prescribed NOT only treats depression but is also one of the most common and the medication with the most succes in treating the eating disorder that I suffer from... This conicidence happened by sheer luck as my dr is not aware of the eating disorder...

Do you think I will get lucky enough to have it help with the depression and the ed... things would be pretty amazing if so.
  • Definitely maybe.

Antidepressant medications and other medications that improve neurotransmitter function can be very helpful for a wide range of issues.

I wasn't clinically depressed when I was prescribed a low-dose antidepressant to improve sleep quality (the goal was to get me into deeper sleep. I didn't have insomnia, I just wasn't reaching deep stage sleep - it's not like you can choose to spend more time in REM sleep).

Even so, I found that I felt "more in control" of my life and had a more positive outlook (even though I wasn't depressed to begin with), and some mild OCD habits disappeared completely (no "therapy" required).

I am NOT saying that any med is a cure-all, you'll just have to see how much the med helps. If you're not happy with the med results, you can try different doses or different meds to see which helps the best.

Exercise and Omega 3 supplements (fish oil or flax seed - I use fish oil) can help a lot too (ask your doctor if these would be appropriate for you, they can reduce the amount of medication you need or can help the meds work better).
