but come on...I'm 27 years old-will I go another 50 or so years without bread or fruit?
No, and there's no reason you should. You can eat fruit - berries, apples, etc. You can eat bread to, although it may not the type you're used to. There are low carb breads at the market, along with flat breads and tortillas. If you're adventurous, you can even make your own with flax\soy\almond flours. If you stick with Atkins over the long haul, you'll be amazed at how much your taste in food changes, and that you won't WANT to eat some of the things that are a regular part of your diet now.

    Quote:
It is unreasonable to expect everyone here to stick to any particular diet forever, since once you are at a healthy wieght it is possible to maintain it through sensible eating and exercise and not exclusively low-carb living.
If sugar & other carbs are what got you to this place, then reintroducing them to your diet at goal will eventually bring you right back to where you are today. There is a very sensible maintainance phase of Atkins, and it's not the least bit unreasonable to expect to be able to stick with it for life. Atkins isn't a short term weight loss diet plan, it a healthy way of eating for life.
  • It is HIGHLY possible to go 50 years without bread. I'm allergic to it and I survive just fine. I can't eat bread, tortillas, cookies, cake, donuts, pie, biscuits, rolls, or anything that has wheat, oats, barley or rye in it.

And I can live with it as the alternative isn't pretty.

I do eat fruit - strawberries and raspberries are my favorites.
  • Yes, I understand that it IS possible to not eat bread for life, especially if you have a condition that doesn't allow you to. And I am not suggesting that anyone get to goal and then go carb crazy. The point I was trying to make is regarding the first couple of posts on this thread...that we shouldn't chastise anyone for a question, or feign any kind of superiority for being able to stick to this particular diet. That we are all here because of our fallibility when it comes to SOME kind of food, and that no one diet is best for everyone long term. Some people need Atkins for life- but there are lots of people out there who use atkins as a way to lose weight, and then eat sensibly to maintain it. There are also many OTHER diets that work for different people. I have read the book and do agree that many do have metabolic resistance, and carb addiction, and so on. But the book also states that even people without those conditions can benefit from Atkins. Discouraging people from asking questions can NEVER be a good thing, whether they share your views or not. The person who started this post was looking for some info-not a babysitter or a guilt trip.
  • Hey everyone!!!

Induction is working really REALLY well for me. I was actualy really shocked and super happy about it.

Since I started the plan about 2 weeks ago I've lost roughly 14lbs!!!!!

But, this may be due to the fact that I was on a low fat diet the week before i started LC. So, maybe i lost 8-10 lbs during the first week of induction!!!

I'm predicting that my weight loss is going to even out though. THis week i'm losing much slower. Lost only 1 lbs so far!!! But i'm okay!!

1 lbs means i'm packing 1 lbs less junk in my trunk!!
  • Posting an update...
I have now been on induction for 11 days and have lost 11 lbs. I was not doing anything out of the ordinary prior to induction....not dieting or indulging. I have also been reading Hellers' book, and for those who find it difficult to stick with Atkin's for physical reasons-it is interesting and follows closely to Atkins, with a reward carbo meal once a day. This sounds WONDERFUL, but I don't think it's for me, now anyway....there are guidelines for that meal that would be too easy for me to screw up, and I'm terrified of my weight climbing back up because of an oversight on my part.
  • Congratulations Carbprincess and Rebeleagle, WTG girls!!!

    Thanks Tennessee!

As excepted though, my weight loss has now stabalized. This is my 3rd week of induction and it looks like i'm losing 1-2 lbs. I'm actually happier losin a little than a lot. 17lbs sort of freaked me out. Mind you, most of it is definately water weight. But, just the same it was a little overwhelming.
  • I lost 11 lbs. the first 2 weeks on Atkins. I have only done induction once and am still trying to lose the rest of my weight. I do believe this is a plan that I can live with. I can't say I have never cheated. I did allow myself 1 piece of dessert on Thanksgiving and Christmas and my Birthday. However, I did walk an extra mile on each of these days, mostly out of guilt.
  • Day two of induction
About five months ago I started eating around 40 or 50 carbs a day and lost 23 pounds. I've been off track the last couple of weeks. I have about ten pounds to lose and I hope induction knocks it out for me. I plan on doing it for two or three weeks.
