This company advertises a low carb pasta that is supposed to be around 5 grams per serving, but tastes like 'normal' pasta.
BUT when I read the nutritional info, it states 42 grams of total carbs and only 4 grams of fiber. Then they say there are an additional 33 grams of undigestible carbs. Any idea what these could be? Do you think this is really a believable claim?
Sometimes I wonder "why" we don't count undigestable carbs. I mean, they still go into your body, so why do we only count the ones that impact blood sugar? Wether or not they impact your blood sugar, they are still doing SOMETHING in there, getting digested etc.... Anyone gotta any info on that?
Sorry, didn't mean to run away with your topic Star. I don't think I would try them. I mean I would have to know first what those mystery 33 grams are. And if they are undigestable, what happens to them? Seems like they are preying on people who don't read labels and take a low carb sticker for face value!
Have you tried Atkins pastas? I am not one for going out and buying everything Atkins, but sometimes I just go with his brand because I know I can trust the contents.
So, they're saying that the carbs are not digested at all - they just go right through you, like fiber. So it's different than just supposedly not impacting blood sugar levels. But I still don't get it. As far as I know, the only non-digestible carb is fiber.....
Star, why don't you email Atkins and see what they say. I'm reading lately about that as well and confused as heck. I'd stay away until you find out. Gosh what will they do next?
I didn't email Atkins, because I didn't like the round-about way that they didn't answer my questions on why they tell us not to count sugar alcohols even though we digest them and they are proven to impact the blood sugar levels of some people. However, I did send an email to DreamFields asking them to explain what it is that makes their carbs undigestible. I'll let you know what I get back.
Hi Brandi and thanks for your interest in Dreamfields. The "fiber blend" in our ingredient listing which consists of inulin, guar gum, xanthan gum, carrageenan, and pectin, protects those 37 controlled carbs (includes the 4 g dietary fiber) from being digested. They pass to the colon and perform as
dietary fiber so you're left with the 5 digestible carbs per serving. Hope this helps explain our product to you. Thanks.
I did reply asking about whether this much non-digestible material results in a laxative effect. I'll let you know what they say....
StarPrincess: OMG! Each time I go to the store I check out that box just to see if I read it wrong the first time! I stand there with my head cocked and this curious look on my face! Now I know I am not that good at math but even I couldn't figure it out.
Let us know how this turns out.
I almost bought the Atkins pasta this week but it is 5 grams for only a 1/2 cup and I figure that just isn't worth it to me.
Why do they do that? I noticed some bars and such having carb counts that don't compute. And then I can't figure out where they're subtracting the rest. I just know I stay away from that stuff cuz smart people on here told me if the numbers don't match there's something hiding.
I've tried the Atkins pasta and think it is gross. Like a lot of low carb pastas, something about the texture makes me think of dried worms.
I have tried Mission reduced carb pasta and it's good. But here's what I realized: I prefer spaghetti squash anyway. It's kindof sweet and a little crunchy and pasta just seems so very bland now. I might give Greenfields a try sometime if I'm cooking for people, but other than that, I'm very happy with my squash.
Sucks, you just can't trust anything....where is the freakin FDA on this stuff ?? when will they step in and help us ?? ohhh right, not untill we've spent BILLIONS of dollars on worthless products.
Hey Star, I have been dying to try spagetti squash but how do you pick one? I remember reading how you cut it and cook it, but I don't know what the "characteristics" of a good squash are and the produce guy was no help.
