OK after Morti's post yesterday... I am curious what everyone does for a living? And with gasoline prices hitting the roof - are you worried? I had a co-worker who had to get rid of her SUV 4 years ago because she could not afford the prices anymore to fill her tank! (and she only had a 3 mile commute)....

So I'll go first...
I was an acountant (BORING!) but now I'm a systems analyst who designs financial systems for a loan/leasing company.

I drive a 1995 Dodge Intrepid with 231,000 miles on it - LOVE this car!!!

I paid $1.85 a gallon today for regular unleaded near Newark NJ but I drive 145 miles roundtrip in commuting everyday and I am a little worried about how much the additional expense will be monthly for us - especially since we live on one salary now...Yikes!

Hi Kim - I currently work in Billing for Central Transport, a trucking company. I live in Detroit, and have to drive 30 miles to work & 30 miles back home (so 60 miles a day). This is FAR for me. It takes me almost a quarter of a tank to get to and from work everyday.

I drive a 2001 Ford Taurus (with 42,000 miles on it). I've been averaging about 3,000 miles every 1.5 to 2 months! YIKES!

Here in Detroit, I have been paying about $1.89 per gallon for the last few days! (My sister who lives in the U.P. of Michigan has been paying $2.05!!!)

I spend approximatly $50.00 per week in gas - $200 per month. That's almost another car payment for me!!!

If it keeps getting any higher, I don't know how I'm going to afford to get to work!

I am a Nanny for 8 mo old triplet boys, Dh runs his family's restaurants.

I drive a 1997 Chevy Blazer with about 130,000 miles on it. Dh drives a 1997 Dodge Caravan with way less miles

I live on the edge of town so I drive about 30 miles of freeway round trip to work/home.

I just paid 2.20 a gallon today for regular unleaded costing me about $37.00 per vehicle to fill up. I can make it last a week if I don't go anywhere but work and home. BTW, thats one of the cheaper gas stations. I used to buy the midgrade stuff but not at these prices. Premium gas can be $2.50 a gallon or more!

Actually, I just checked a website we have here that will give you all the gas prices in town. The cheapest is $2.03 at the Air Force Base (not like we have access ) and the most expensive is $2.51, both are for regular unleaded.

I'm a Technical Operations Specialist for one of the biggest mobile carriers here in Australia...I monitor faults, and perform operational tasks for our technical support and porting groups, yadda yadda yadda...

I'm only a 15 minute drive from my office, life is sweet! And the last time I filled my tank (full tank is $40) prices were about 90c a litre.

Hi there. I'm a....forgot the politically correct term (again). I started out being called a "general office worker" and I guess now it's called something else. Just wish the pay went up with the fancy term! I haven't filled up lately and I'm afraid to look!! I've got a '95 Mercury Tracer (DH has 2 vehicles. One's a '93 Tempo and the other's a '97 Ford Ranger<--gas hog) and I drive like 3 miles to work (takes me about 5 minutes to get there...if I speed a tad ). DH drives like 25 miles to work so his gas consumption is higher (add his fishing and hunting in there and it raises the stakes on that also). I only work part-time so this is getting to the point I'm wondering if I've got to work full-time (hate the idea) and if so if that'll interfere with me being a scout leader (DH would be happy but DD's would be upset).

I live in NJ but I work for the Discovery Dept in a Pharmaceutical company in NY State. It takes me 1 hour to get to work every day and one hour home (mostly traffic lights OY).

I drive a Town & Country van and paid $1.70 for gas last week.

Am I worried, NO, I can't worry about something like this that I have no control over. I don't go on vacation much nor do I travel.

Its funny because gas prices are cheeper in NJ, it starts out like $1.70/gal and by the time I get to NY, the prices are $2.00/gal, what a RIP!!

I'm an associate editor for a publishing company. I work on two different agricultural magazines, which fits my agricultural journalism degree just perfectly!

I work out of my apartment, so no worries about gas prices here. I have to travel to a meeting about once a month, and that's really about it! Occassionally, I'll go on other trips (like to Buffalo this next week), but I get to fly (thank goodness!). But, the bad part about working at home is, as soon as the "work day" is over, I want to get out of here! So, lots of mileage on my car comes from fun stuff, not work-related stuff. Oh, and I drive a 2002 Kia Sportage with about 40,000 miles on it (DH and I used to travel a LOT!)

I just got gas last night and paid $1.79/gallon. That's about the cheapest around here, I think. I got it at Sam's Club (love that place).

Well, I'm a high school Biology teacher. I have a 25-30 minute commute every morning which equal out to about 20-25 miles. Mostly out of town driving as I live on the edge of Rockford and can just head south and be out of town in a jiff.

Yes, I'm worried about gas prices. Not so much for myself because I don't have a HUGE amount of bills that I must pay... but for other people. It scares me when I pull up to a gas station and they won't let you pay with credit cards or pump any gas until you go inside and prepay. How much money can we afford for gas??? My BF and I are talking about getting a hybrid car and getting rid of his truck as it already costs him well over 50 dollars to fill his tank and he gets about 12 miles to the gallon. Outrageous.

I could go off here on how the big companies have pushed research on non gasoline run engines into oblivion time and time again because they want to make money. Well, pretty soon we're not going to have a choice and everyone is gonna be screwed. that's all I'll say cause otherwise I'll get all worked up and stuff.

I used to be an executive assistant - hated it beyond reason, but it's hard to get out of. Currently I'm contracting at a big tech company as something like a database administrator. My contract ends in 3 months, though and Finance isn't letting them hire me so far so who knows? The ultimate goal is to become a homicide investigator. And I'm mailing in an application for a local police department today!

I drive a 1997 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder (red, of course). I bought it for myself as a present 4 years ago because I decided that I needed a little red convertible before being middle-aged. I love the car, but I can only put premium gas in it, so right now it costs about $2.37 a gallon. On the positive side, I only live a mile away from work, most of my friends are in walking distance, and the bar is only 1 1/2 blocks away . DH has a 97 Ford Ranger and a 20 mile commute. Like Brenda said, those things are not real conservative on the gas, so he's started riding his bike to the light rail station (a mile away) and taking the train into work. Thank goodness for public transportation!

I work for a hospital in their audio visual department. I commute 25 miles one way. 3 out of 5 days I car pool with another person who lives in my town and works the same hours I do.

I still usually have to get a full tank of gas each week about about $35/fill-up. This is due to aerobics, kids activities etc. Are we going to have to give up those things in life as well?

I am a Legal Assistant for a world-wide charity. I don't personally get to go out in the field to do the "nitty gritty" relief and development work, but I do the behind the scenes stuff. I work with 3 attorneys that I have well-trained to mostly do all their own stuff - the General Counsel is my boss. Mostly I have my own tasks that keep the organization running - but I am just a small part as we have 20,000 employees worldwide. =) It's a great place to work.

I used to live 5 minutes away, but now I live 13 miles one-way from work (15-35 minutes depending on traffic), and I last paid $1.95/gallon, but that was at Costco. Last price I saw was $2.16 for the cheap stuff - but that was yesterday. Who knows what they will go up to today.

Eventually I would like to give up the rat race and be a SAHM. Eventually. Maybe.

Oops, forgot to way what kind of car I have. I have a 2001 Chevy Prizm with 46000 miles on it. I don't much care for the car and we plan on trading it in before it gets to be too old.

Put gas in my tank today. I checked @ 2 of the gas stations in town. One was $2.00 a gallon (premium unleaded) and the other was $1.96. Guess which one I went to? OH!! And the station that charged $1.96 for premium ALSO charged the same for straight unleaded. Who'd be silly enough to put straight in when premium was the same price??

I am nurse and live about 18 miles (36 round trip) from work.... takes about 45 minutes to get there due to traffic during the day and about 25-30 minutes to get home at night.

I drive a 2001 Nissan Frontier Crewcab- with 50,000 miles on it- last fill up was ~$30.00 at $1.74 a gallon that usually lasts me about a week only drive to work 3 or 4 days a week and most of everything else is with in 5-8 miles of us. We use my truck for most of the daily duties and trips. DH drives a 98 Eclipse- traveling with 2 preteens in that vehicle is not an option. We are selling it this summer to his 15 year old neice and he is getting a new Honda- probably a civic sedan (basically for gas, since he travels for work and drives probably 300 to 500 miles a week in town)...

Yep mileage on my truck stinks... 21-22 miles to the gallon.

I am currently a master's student in Mechanical Engineering, and I should be done in the next 3-4 months. My undergrad was Systems Design Engineering, which is a broader mix of several engineering disciplines (really enjoyed it). I'm not certain anymore what type of engineering I would like to do upon completion of my master's. I feel a bit like I'm at some apathetic impasse in my life. But, whatever. (<- there's the apathy showing up again!!)

Like I've mentioned at one time or another in the chat threads, I'm trying to go overseas to work (or something) after I finish and I'm trying to dig up contacts here or there to try and make that happen. Worse comes to worse, there's a program for youth under 30 where I can get a work visa for another countries and just show up and start looking for a job while I'm there. Which actually seems like an appealing way to do it, at least for a little while. I could always bum around and take whatever job I can get. We'll see.
