Holly:

Diet soda is a subject of differing opinions. Some will tell you that any diet soda with caffeine is a no-no (and that any caffeine, for that matter, is a no-no!). Others will tell you that any artificial sweeteners should be avoided -- with varying degrees of steadfastness on that one, also!

So, here's my personal opinion -- drink the blasted soda!!! I've gone on record as saying this before and I'll repeat myself now just for good measure. This WOE is about choices. You have to make the program livable for your personal tastes or else you are setting yourself up for failure. No matter how you look at it, we're giving up a lot of things (compared to our old way of eating). I can handle that. But there's a limit to what I can do without, you know? I'm a coffee and diet soda fanatic. Plain and simple. You won't ever find me without one of the two (sometimes even both!) in my tight little grasp. I've now been on Atkins for 92 days and I've lost 37 pounds. I'm not only pleased with the results (okay, thrilled), but I've done so without feeling as though I'm in a POW camp. I made the choice that I was willing for the weight loss to be possibly slower but that I would remain sane. Worked for me! GOOD LUCK!

I totally agree with Sped on this one. I am a diet pepsi freak. I tried for a while to do the caffeine free diet pepsi, and had awful headaches. I figured that it was worth it to have the caffeine and lose the weight a little slower than to not have the caffeine and have headaches. They say the headaches go away after a few days, but I couldn't last that long. It was by far the worst headache I had ever had in my life. I have given up a lot on this WOE and caffeine and diet pepsi just can't be given up for me right now lol! I have been on Atkins since Jan 5, and have lost a total of 48 lbs as of today. I am happy with that and I have had no caffeine headaches. lol With that said....think I'll go and have a diet pepsi

I have a DT MT Dew every once in a while. I took the book to heart and quit everything (carbs AND my caffeine). I've got to admit I miss the jolt of caffeine in the morning. Especially seeing how I'm not "pumped" the way I first was (with energy). That seems to have worn off for me. I'm trying to add more exercise in to see if that helps.
Basically---if caffeine/pop makes you happy go for it.

I also gave up caffine when I started. Yes.. I went throught major withdrawls, but when it was all done and over with I felt great. It's nice not HAVING to have it. However I do have a couple doses a week. Saturday nights I have my HUGE cup of fully loaded coffee and it keeps me up until 5am (I play a game I'm addicted too and don't want to sleep) and then I have a small diet coke once a week or when I'm dining out.
It doesn't seem to have effected my weight loss, however I try to be careful that I don't get hooked on it again.
I'd have to say if it makes you happy and helps you to keep better OP.. go for it, just know that it may slow your losses down.

Lol, you guys are so right!
I think what I'll do is reward myself in a way...give it up through out the week, but on the weekends allow myself one can of diet Dr. Pepper everyday friday through sunday...sounds reasonable enough to me!

Holly,

If you get too rigid with this, it will be just another diet, and not something that you will be able to make a lifestyle. Have the soda, and enjoy the heck out of it! I refuse to give up caffine, and I am still losing weight. This WOE is different for each individual.

I don't know what the big deal is about caffine anyway. I don't like diet soda at all but I sure love my one cup of coffee in the morning, or my tea.
I gave up white bread, white rice, gravy, and regular pasta and now its whole wheat all the way, but caffine is here to stay.
