Before starting a low carb diet, I had horrible restless leg syndrome every night. I'm on day 3 of very low carbs and I just noticed that I haven't had restless legs since starting. Is this typical? I'm very thrilled! I'm able to sleep through the night for the first time in a long time!
yes, typical. its a great treatment for RLS actually.
this lady's website has a lot of medical background to benefits of Keto/low carb dieting. very helpful. Maria Emmerich mariamindbodyhealth. com
Random note: 25% of cases of RLS are caused by anaemia. It's always worth getting your ferritin levels checked. The lower reference range varies between countries from 12 to 75, though it's more often 25 or 50. There's been research showing that if you have RLS, it needs to be above 75. So if yours is below 75, either get a doctor to prescribe iron or find prescription-dose supplements, which are much higher than standard supplements. Don't supplement without getting tested, though, because too much iron is dangerous.
and... if you get restless legs FROM low carb (which can happen at first while your body adjusts), take some magnesium.
Restless leg is caused by not enough fat in myelin sheaths around the nerves. So adding more fat may help.
phosphatidylserine is a product made by your body which contains fatty acids and proteins. They are essential molecules that provide cellular structure and protection. This makes up the brain and surrounds the myelin sheaths that wrap and protect the nerves in the body. It's good for helping things like Altheimers, ADHD, and helps to protect the leg nerves (all nerves) that cause the restless leg too. Unfortunately researchers are squabbling about what actually causes restless leg syndrome. If more fat and proteins in your diet are helping, then by all means, keep it up. As well as losing weight, I went on HF/LC because I knew that my brain would be strengthened as well. And, the brain and nerves are all made out of the same materials. So why not? (Not a doctor)
