Anyone with acid reflux/GERD problems?

  • Before I started Low Carbing I had a horrible problem with acid reflux/GERD. But from my 2nd day of this WOE I have never had a problem again. So obviously it was certain high carb foods doing the problem.But you cut everything out at the beginning, so I don't know what foods it could have been.My question is this. As I prepare now to start adding more foods into my routine (OWL) has anyone experienced particular foods that caused this problem? I never want that again, so I would like to know what foods to avoid. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
  • I haven't had a problem either since I changed to low carb. Thusfar, I haven't found anything that triggers it. DH tells me nuts do it for him but he eats far more than he should on his plan.
  • Too much diet soda gives me a bit of acid reflux. Basically, since I started low-carbin' it...no real problems other than when I sometimes drink too much diet soda. Before low-carb, I used to get all kinds of bad intestinal disorders...but now...ALL GONE!
  • For my DH coffee is a big stimulus, if he drinks decaffinated he has much less problems. Another trigger for him is tomatoes but he refuses to give these up and takes the medication instead.

  • I have had problems with Acid Reflux for years and have been on medication for it for about 2.

    The foods that cause me problems are:
    High Acid Foods(bananas, oranges, lemons, limes, etc.)
    Spicy Foods(Peppers, hot sauce, anything Mexican)
    Alcohol - it will cause the flap at the top of your esophogus to loosen and therefore acid can escape easier.

    Try sleeping with your head proped above your heart. Gravity will help keeping things down where they are suppose to be.
    And finally, if I drink some milk before I go to bed it seems to help.

    I feel for you. It is very unpleasant and yet so persistant!
  • If you don't mind me asking...do you have a condition known as "Hyatal Hernia"? That's when the flap above the esophogus never completely closes and this condition leads to chronic acid reflux problems. My ex-hubby had that and there was nothing (other than meds) he could take, he just had to avoid all the foods mentioned below. He would (on occasion) break the alcohol rule, and would suffer dearly!

    You know...I don't know.
    I do know that when I was born that the flap over my esophogus wasn't completely formed and I would...sorry for being graphic here...projectile vomit after almost every meal for at least 3 months until(they said) it had formed over.
    I will so some research and talk to my doctor about it. I have never even heard of this before...off I go to google!
  • Morgan - One thing I do remember (as I went to the GI doc with ex-hubby) was that the doc said that the only cure was an operation (which ex didn't want to have) and treatment (meds that were supposed to treat symptoms, but really did very little for him). In absence of surgery, doc told him that he would just have to "live with it" and simply avoid the foods you mentioned previously (tomatoes really did it for him). I remember he would take his script before his "cheat" sometimes and that seemed to help with the acid reflux symptoms. In severe cases, doc's do recommend surgery...but I guess you have to weigh the benefits vs. the risks (if any).

    Thank you soooo much for bringing this to my attention(And sorry for hijacking this tread) but I just called my Mom and she said that doctors have told her that she has this! She only has problems when she is really stressed so she never thought to bring this up to me??!!
    Now to call my doctor...I have been living with this for so long...my doctor told me I would just have to "live with it"
  • I had GERD that was so horrible that I would be vomiting in my sleep and everynight I would have searing sore throat pain that would last into the next day.

    I went on Weight Watchers and went low fat and two days later, poof! That was 62.5 lbs. ago and this all went away last June. If I eat too much oil and fat, I can feel it. I have no gallbladder issues btw.
  • any high sugar would trigger my gerd. I also have hiatial hernia (self diagnosed) made much worse when i est too much and or my stomach motility slows down and well constipation sets in,. but moslty when i am stressed and est too much.
  • I was having a lot of problems with heartburn. It was happening so often that I wondered if it was acid reflux. It seemed like every time I ate and sometimes when I didn't eat it would happen. It seemed like high fat foods, would trigger it, it seemed like heavy bread and jalapenos would trigger it, but then again it was happening almost all the time after a meal so it was hard to tell.

    I mentioned it to my husband and he handed me a pack of Prilosec. It was supposed to be a 14 day treatment that you take, but from the very first pill I felt better, and stopped getting the symptoms.

    Every so often it comes back, but I would highly recommend trying some of this.
  • My husband has pretty bad acid reflux and everytime he goes back on his low carb eating it totally goes away ...for him it seems to be sugar that makes it so bad ...
