Day 1 of Induction...need a buddy...

Hi everyone, I have done Atkins about 7 years ago and had great results. I am now back on the Atkins train and need a buddy for the day to day. I am 30-something and have a little boy, who loves to feed his food to Mommy. I am also recovering from qutiing smoking at new year and am freaking out about the whole no gum thing.
Success is imminent!!!
Tara

CrabbyCakes 01-15-2008 07:43 AM

Hi bgbrwnys101! Good for you for starting again. I am on my third or so attempt at Atkins, but this is the first time I have really tried to stick with it. I just finished my first first week and so far, so good! I also quit smoking recently (about 2 months ago) and I swear that was a lot easier than giving up chocolate, haha.

Best of luck to you!

SMiller96 01-15-2008 06:06 PM

I am in my second week. I do not find it hard at all to follow. I do not feel hungry. This is the best "diet" plan so far. With Weight Watchers, I was hungry all the time. But my weakness has always been with eating too much, and not necessarily with food choices. This option is easier for me, because I can eat until I'm satisfied and not worry about points or calories.

bgbrwnys, I have a 6 year old daughter, who loves chicken nuggets, spaghetti and mac and cheese. It is so hard not to eat what she's eating! It is so hard!
I'm not a smoker, but my stepfather and sis in law are smokers. I've watched them go through the ups and downs of trying to quit and I know it cannot be easy! Good Luck!
My weakness is beer! LOL Sounds horrible, but I just like it. I haven't had alcohol during induction...but I plan to have a low carb beer soon. I don't know, it isn't the same, though.

bgbrwnys101 01-16-2008 06:16 AM

LOL!!!
Thanks guys for posting in. Tell me about it my son is currently eating a yummy-looking bagel, while I make my eggs...hhmmmhh!!!
Hey what do you guys know about trident and induction, I neeeed gum!!!

jacksonsmom 01-16-2008 12:33 PM

Hi All,

I had good results with Atkins about 6 or 7 years ago and am trying it again. I am also on 1st day of induction. I lost about 30 lbs in a few months before. Anyways, good luck all.

Andrea

You Go Girl

BG: You will find a wealth of support here. I can't tell you what it has done for me to keep me motivated during induction. Atkins works for me because it is so structured but seems overall pretty easy to keep track of. My key is preparation in advance of each day (foodwise). If I wait until I'm ready to eat and open the fridgy...I'm lost. The LC chit chat has been great for me to check in with on a regular basis. I lurked for awhile before coming onboard. Low Carb really works wonders for a lot of people. So many internet resources available too.

You can do it. The beginning is hard because I tend to say to myself, "xyz months until I really see a difference". Shouldn't do that but I do. What helps me is to keep reminding myself that days, weeks and months are going to pass whether I stick to plan or not. Six months down the road will still be six months down the road whether I am a sloth or working towards a goal. I recently read story about a woman who was 40 and wanted to become a DR. Everyone said to her, "But you will be 48 before you truely get underway with anything." Her answer, "In eight years I will be 48 anyway." That really inspired me for some reason (even though I don't have any grand plan to become a Dr.).

I'm sending you some magic mojo wishes:jig::jig:

Getting through each day and trying to remain "sticky wid' it" is a challenge but I bet you have tackled much harder things in your life to date.

bgbrwnys101 01-16-2008 01:56 PM

Thanks Stayin I did it before also. But that was before 4 years of trying to have a baby, 3 m/cs and one baby later and about 70 lbs.
Ok Jenn Bob Harper is about the sexiest thing I have ever seen, how did you do that?!?!?!?!?!?
Tara

bambifox 01-16-2008 10:45 PM

I would love to be your buddy...I too am almost exactly where you are at and could use a buddy too! I just started Atkins 1 wk 3 days ago. I am trying something new...I will only weigh myself once per week every sat. Unfortunately, I have not quick smoking yet...one thing at a time! But I applaud you...I wish I could be that strong. It just seems that changing too many things at once freaks me out and nothing gets accomplished. This is my second week and I am starting my workout program tomorrow.

How are you with coming up with creative atkins dishes? I was doing the salad thing and to be honest...i'm starting to crave a cookie...but i'm not giving in. I just know that its too soon to start with the carb substitutes in this area. I am also a former atkins person and lost 30 lbs years ago. stay in touch...let's do this...summer is just around the corner.

bgbrwnys101 01-17-2008 04:44 AM

Hey Bambi
Great I would love you to join this board!!! You are right about summer and I want to be in my pre baby clothes by then!!!
I have found that is I am craving sweets eating some really rich cheese or even some pecans or macadamia nuts helps alot with that. i also like pecans because they seem to help with the Atkins mouth!!!!LOL
If you want to quit smoking try chantix, my dr prescribed it for me and it worked great!!!
Have a great day all!!!

bgbrwnys101 01-18-2008 04:26 AM

broadabroad 01-18-2008 06:39 AM

Hi, bgbrwnys! I'm new to Atkins too - this is Day 5 of Induction for me.

GO YOU with going down 4lb!!! That's fantastic!

Can I ask - are all you folks measuring your carbs, and if so, how?

bgbrwnys101 01-19-2008 06:17 AM

b.a.b.
I am avtually carrying an index card daily with carbs, water, and activity on it. Sort of like Weight watchers journaling, but its smaller, cheaper and I dont do points! I just make sure I subtract fiber from carbs and go with that. I am usually around 20 carbs, but have gone over a couple of times.
All, it would be a great ideaif we all posted in with a couple of low or no carb food items we enjoy, it might widen the variety for everyone if we shared our fave's.
Here is one of mine: Planters puts out a macadamia, pecan and almond mix that is yummy, It is also 1 C per serving. I take them out of the can and put them in individual serving snack baggies to avoid mindlessly eating the whole can!!!
Have a great day you guys!!!!

Hello Ladies,

I am on my first day of induction and would love to give and get support here. I have followed a low carb diet successfully in the past but this last year I got divorced, started a new job, moved to a new city with my 2 kids and put on 20 pounds. Yikes!
so...here I am! Ready to git-r-done:)
I historically have a very hard time the first several days with my energy level so I will need encouragement to hang in there. I am NOT buying a new wardrobe! I am bound and determined to get into my clothes (and feel better!)
Just wanted to say Hello! ands I am here for you too.

CJ

Dropzofjupiter29 01-19-2008 02:23 PM

I did atkins a few years ago. Starting my induction tomorrow. I'm sure ill be here alot. It really helps to keep ya going.

bambifox 01-19-2008 08:03 PM

Dear luv2lift, your story basically mirrors my life. If it's any encouragement to you ladies, I started Atkins exactly 2 weeks ago. Here's my stats so far: wk1 - 5 lbs lost; wk2 - 3 lbs lost...and hopefully still counting down. When I first started, my energy level was in the toilet, but wk2, my energy started to pick up so I started waking up extra early and going for a morning walk (approx. 20 min.), then returning to my home and doing 10 min on the eliptical. I have noticed so far that my energy level has increased dramatically with the exercise. Today, I was out with my 8 yr old daughter all day shopping, movies, eating out (chili's), but staying low-carb and it was great. This makes me feel great because just two weeks before, all I wanted to do was to lay around the house on the weekend. I love to hear other people's stories, challenges...etc. This forum is great! Tomorrow (Sun.) is shopping day for me and I will be trying some of the recipes on this website called Linda' Low Carb Menus. Sorry, can't post the website because I don't have 25 posts so the system won't let me...Anyway, I'll let you all know how it turns out. Joyce

bgbrwnys101 01-20-2008 08:07 AM

Hi there, cj and Jupiter!

Well, this is week one wending to a close, and I'm not finding it hard going to give up the carbs yet. I HAVE found it hard to lose weight, though - I thought maybe I'd eaten too much cheese or cream, and it may be that, but actually I think most likely I need to eat more protein. I'm determined to do better next week, and I'm really really hoping that when I do my OFFICIAL weigh-in tomorrow evening I'll find that I've lost some weight after all. Fingers crossed.

Normally I'm not much of a carnivore, but I have to say - damn, steak is yummy! And filling! And yummy! I went into Sizzler's today and had a 'surf and turf' with veggies (valiantly turning away the ubiquitous triangle of cheesy toast stuff) and some yummy salad, and it was delicious! Can't argue with a diet that lets you go and eat such filling meals!

luv2lift 01-20-2008 10:53 PM

hello:)

Day 2 for me , girls, and I am sooo tired:(
I have been pretty good as far as eating very, very low carb but my energy is in the toilet. I remember from before that my energy level does kick up in the second week but right now I am just fat and tired and hungry.
It is inspiring to hear stories of weight loss. I just went through my closet as I do nce in awhile. To throw out (give away) things I havent worn for awhile and just reorganize. Boy do I have some keee..oooot little outfits that I can't squash my body into just yet.

I really appreciate just knowing that you all are going through the same thing. It does help. I am bound and determined to get into those D**m Rock and Republic jeans I paid way too much for if it kills me! :carrot:
Patience...patience...it's only day 2.

I have yet to attempt to excersize on the LC diet. I will let ya know how it goes..

broadabroad 01-21-2008 02:19 AM

Luv2Lift - are you scoffing lots of protein and fats too? Sorry if this is a silly question!

Meanwhile, in the world of me - after 1 week of Atkins (and, preceding that, one week of general Low Carb while I sorted myself out in preperation for Atkins) I have lost 8lb - 4 each week. This is FANTASTIC!

I would feel suspicious of it - I mean, I always did think that for weightloss to be real and lasting you should be aiming to lose a pound or two every week. But - 8lb! In 2 weeks! Man, that is just SO cool! And I'm feeling better, definitely - I'd got to a point where it was hurting when I got up out of bed, and that's just no bloody good, is it? I was feeling like an old lady. But I'm already noticing a difference there.

So far today my food choices have been good and I've been drinking water when I can, and all being well I'll be going to the gym tonight. I've decided that my initial exercise routine, for the first month, will consist of: walk to work (15mins), maybe walk home (but this is optional), then a minimum of 20 minutes in the gym on the treadmill every day. I figure that if I'm letting myself keep it to 20 mins, it doesn't feel so daunting and it's going to be easier to get into the routine (and in practice the 20 mins flies by and generally stretches to at least half an hour, while I'm listening to my audiobook...)

ssgtswife33 01-21-2008 10:06 AM

Hi there...

Today is day 8 for me on Atkins and I am going strong. I lost 11lbs the first week and I was totally surprised. Happy but surprised. I'm sure alot of it was probably water weight but I also worked hard at the gym last week. And I will continue.

Luv2lift- I was that way too on day 2. By the time I was at day 5, I was filling alot better. Your body is just going thru changes as your eating changes. Try doing some exercises as well, that can make a difference. Especially when you weigh in. Hang in there... it will get better. :)

broadabroad- :congrat: on your loss

Happy Monday Everyone!! :):):)

Have an awesome day, girls!

bambifox 01-21-2008 06:55 PM

Luv2lift, I must tell you that I've been here in VA for about 1 yr and it was also very hard for me with an 8 yr old daughter and an ex-husband that lives in New York! When I moved, I spent so much time getting her adjusted (i.e., school, new environment, etc.) that I spent absolutely no time for me. That was good, but now it's time for us to do something for ourselves. Little did I realize that while my wasteline kept growing, I didn't have the energy to do things WITH my daughter instead of just FOR her. I find that the kids appreciate it when we can do things WITH them much better. So let's stop the guilt trips (all mom's have), and let's get that teeny weeny hourglass body! WE CAN DO IT! and in the process, make the best role models for our kids..more than Britney (ha ha), Hanna Montanna, etc.!

bambifox 01-21-2008 06:58 PM

Spectacular low-carb RECIPE ALERT!!!! Anyone interested in a kick-butt seafood bisque soup, holla at me for the recipe...I made it yesterday and have been eating it for 2 DAYS!!! It's really that good. I'm gonna try some more recipes I found here on this site and I'll send you all my personal findings...yum yum!

I am on my 22nd on Induction, staying in that phase, as I have much to lose.

Good luck to all my new 'buddies'!

luv2lift 01-23-2008 03:56 PM

hello!

Ok..I am on my um? 5th day now and I feel so much better. I actually feel great! I have lost 4 pounds and I feel like I am past the sugar withdrawals.
I had a great workout last night and i was still pretty strong which I know from past experience sometimes isn't the case. It's possible I still had a little bit of carbs in my system but my stick was purple this morning (does anyone still do that besdies me?? ;-) I have been on a version of the diet where I eat just a tad of carbs right before my workout and I was still able to stay in ketosis. I may try that if I start feeling weak as the days roll on. Anyways, just wanted to share that I feel so much better..sheesh.:)
I would love the recipe for seafood bisque! Part of what helps me to stay on track is variety. I had deviled eggs and coffee (whipping cream and splenda added) for breakfast and I just had jumbo shrimp sauteed in garlic butter for lunch today along with some havarti. Last night I had rubbed boneless chicken breast with grilled pepper strips. I don't feel deprived at all. i know in the past, I got stuck on the eggs, bacon, steak, cheese plan and felt deprived and bored. So from past experience I promised myself I would 'treat' myself to a little more effort when it comes to meal planning and preperation.
I think I will check out the recipes section for some great LC recipes. I have yet to navigate this site for recipes, so feel free to offer direction.

Have an amazing day! and hang in there. You deserve it!

CJ

Okay guys...here it is...the best low-carb recipes

Can be found at: http://genaw.com/lowcarb/recipes.html I've tried a few of the recipes on this site including the seafood bisque soup and it was outrageously delish! Try some of the 4 and 5 star recipes. Linda's review of the food is very real (as the pics) and honest. Hope this helps. Joyce;)

bambifox 01-23-2008 05:13 PM

Luv2lift, what kind of carbs to you have before workout? fruits, nuts, etc??? Sometimes I feel like a need to eat something that gives me more fuel before I hit the eliptical. Any suggestions???

bgbrwnys101 01-25-2008 04:31 AM

Hey everyone
Still hanging in there, i ate a lot of sunflower seeds last night, but bibnt eat the chocolate I craved!!! So, I figure thats good!
How are you all doin???
Tara

bambifox 01-25-2008 09:23 AM

Tomorrow is my 3rd week weigh-in...wish me luck

I for one have been hanging in there too. I don't count carbs, but I make sure to avoid refined carbs so I'm good. Drinking a little more water than usual...2-3 cups a day...energy level is good and the valerian pills are helping me to sleep at night. Also, I've been taking these fat pills (all natural) that contain vinegar, b-6, kelp (iodine) and that has helped tremendously in killing my appetite/cravings. Glad your hanging in there:carrot:....Joyce

Good morning all

How are things going???
T

luv2lift 01-26-2008 12:36 PM

Good Morning!

Hi Ladies,

Bambifox: A couple years ago I was on a 'targeted Ketoenic diet' that my trainer helped me with where I ate very low carb all the time with the exception of right before a workout. I would eat a small amount (like 15 to 20gms) of high glycemic carbs and was actually able to have an incredible intense workout without any spillover (meaning I stayed in ketosis).
I am not a scientist so not sure exactly how it works but it was explained to me that in the presence of intense excersise your body goes immediately to the most available source of energy. So I would take in high glycemic carbs immediately before a workout. You (I) would use those carbs as energy for the workout and not have it effect your state of ketosis if the correct amount was ingested. It is similar to how marathon runners etc. eat those little packets of sugar gel or bars and whatnot to get immediately energy. It is like that, except I am on a low carb diet at all other times. It took me a couple times to figure out how much I could get away with and not affect my diet. It turned out to be 15 to 20 grams (for me...).
I am not qualified to give advise on it and hopefully haven't opened a can of worms talking about it as I know that eating sugary carbs is cardinal sin on a LC diet:devil:! I primarilyy work out with weights and found that I was losing bodyfat and looking trim but I was weaker over-all when working out while LC'ing:^:. My trainer, who has trained many competitve athletes and is very knowledgable on this, told me about this targeted carb ingestion thing. I tried it and it worked. :wl:
I was actually able to stay in ketosis and get very trim while still being able to have very strong workouts with the help of some high gylcemic carbs right before (like 10 minutes before..) my workout session. I , again, only know a little about why it worked for me but I do know it only works if you excerise intensely after ingesting the carbs. You have to *use* them after taking them in. So, again, I am only qualified enough to give my experience and probably create a lot of questions :?:, but thats what I was told and thats my experience with how it worked for me.:D

If you excersise just fine without that, I would say don't play with fire:flame:. For me, I am mostly a weight trainer and while I feel great LC'ing in most other respects, it does negatively affect my strength and endurance levels at the gym:faint:. I am going to kitty foot a little and see if I cant do the targeted thing again. I will try having just 10 grams prior to my next workout and see what that does.

So...the very long winded answer to your questions ,Bambi, :p is that I took in (hold onto your seat:eek:!) m-n-m's or skittles or white crackers etc.
Things that are usually the devil on a LC diet and that convert like lightening to sugar in your bloodstream. I would eat maybe 12 m-n-m's or 4 saltines or 1/4 a heshey bar etc.. and then hit the gym with vengeance.:strong:

Sorry if I bored anyone with that life rendition! Thanks for the LC recipes links!
Yay!
