How often do you weigh yourself????

I was just wondering what works best for you. I was weighing myself once a week: same time/same day. Last week I changed it up and did it first thing every morning. I found it fluctuated up and down/ 2 pounds- throughout the week:( . I am going back to once a week, I think. How often do you prefer? Thanks for sharing.

Tara D 12-13-2006 08:13 AM

I weigh daily...I find it helps keep on track with making healthy decisions. I have a very accurate scale and a very regular eating schedule, so I don't have the problem of seeing unexpected fluctuations from day to day.

Christina7806 12-13-2006 08:23 AM

I weigh monthly. 7 days after my period starts. The same time of day each time. I cannot handle seeing the fluctuations due to hormones, salt intake, etc. Even though I know, logically, what is causing the fluctuations, I cannot deal emotionally. Doing it once a month gives me a good general idea of how I am progressing.

rockinrobin 12-13-2006 09:33 AM

First of all, Tara I am very curious to know what kind of scale you have. I am in the market for a new one and it seems you are satisfied with yours. I'd love to know what it is. Thanks.

Christina, what control you have!!!

I weigh myself every morning before I eat breakfast. I record it once a week, on Mondays.

OnePerDecade 12-13-2006 10:02 AM

I weigh every morning, as soon as I get up. It keeps me on track - and when I see that fluctuation thing, I look at my Fitday & do the math & I can accept that it's water or hormonal and it's not "real" and I'm good :)

Today is SUCH a huge day speaking of weighing in.....I am less than 160 & am a NORMAL BMI!!!!!!

RememberHowToSmile 12-13-2006 10:22 AM

I like to weight myself daily first thing in the morning. The fluctuation tells me how I am doing with salt, water, food, ect. Because of the fluctuation I only record it Saturday mornings. (Or if I know I'm not going to be home on Saturday then I will count my Friday weight in). I could never do the monthly thing I like to see how I'm doing too much.

KimberlyinMN 12-13-2006 10:47 AM

I weigh once a week at my TOPS meeting. I find that having an "official" weigh-in makes me a bit more honest than if I were just weighing myself. I do wear the same type of clothes for weighing in. I used to wear knit pants and a t-shirt, but found that once the weather got colder, well, the knit pants weren't warm enough. I've switched to wearing jeans and a t-shirt. I know that switching from the knit pants to jeans added some weight to the first weigh-in, but at least I am warmer now! ;) Our meeting starts at 10:30 a.m. so I usually weigh-in around 9:45 a.m. I used to wait to eat my breakfast until after I weighed in (bringing a banana and a liter of water with me) but I found I was getting too hungry. Now I have a piece of toast at around 6 a.m. To me, as long as I continue to wear the jeans and t-shirt and eat that one piece of toast, I am still getting an accurate view of weight lost the previous week -- just not what I would weigh naked and starving.

Kimberly

PS. TOPS is only $25 a year!

Christina, this makes so much sense! I have a hard time accepting water weight gain right before my period. Sometimes it is like 4+ pounds!

I weigh myself once a week, first thing in the morning. Daily weigh-ins vary too much and play havoc on my mind. With once a week weigh-ins, as long as I am eating my acceptable calories, I always have a weight loss. :carrot: I've only been dieting for 113 days, so I still need the motivation of seeing the scale go down everytime.

alinnell 12-13-2006 11:40 AM

I weigh myself daily, every morning as soon as I get up, and I log it on an Excel spreadsheet. Each Saturday, I take that weight and log it on a separate page. Even though there are daily fluctuations, most of my weekly Saturday weight-ins generally show a decrease. It's been almost a year since I've been logging my weight, and out of all the weeks I've logged, very few show an increase in weight (well, very few up until the past couple of weeks! LOL).

I actually like to see the daily fluctuations, though. It keeps me on track for the rest of the day. If there is no change, I rarely do anything different from the previous day. If the weight is up, I'm extra diligent to stay away from the candy dish at work. If the weight is down, I'm very happy, and I think about what I did the previous day and try to copy that. The usual fluctuations do not upset me enough to cause havoc with my psyche--but the latest 3 pound increase (which still won't decrease) has gotten me a teeny bit flustered. I thought I had been quite good during Thanksgiving, but too many dinners out caused a gain that I'm still trying to get rid of. But I'm watching it daily and I know I'll overcome the slump.

mandalinn82 12-13-2006 12:03 PM

I am another every day weigher. I just like to see it daily, even though I know its going to fluctuate. It helps to keep me on track and lets me catch problems (like not drinking enough water, which causes me to retain pounds of water) earlier than if I did a weigh-in once a week.

Mami 12-13-2006 12:07 PM

Yet another daily weigher here. I've been doing this for the past 15 years or more and can't break the habit. This was especially useful when I was maintaining (which was the case most of my life). If I gained a few pounds but did not fluctuate down again within a few days, I knew it was time to "chill" a bit on the food intake or I'd step up the exercise for a little while. For now, while losing, I love rushing to fitday.com's report section after weighing to see my average weight change over the last week, 2 weeks, month and 2 months (I do them all...LOL). I am one of those obsessive tracker types..I find it fun :)

SlimLindy 12-13-2006 12:14 PM

I used to weigh daily. Now I'm doing it weekly because I SERIOUSLY was WAY too into the number. I may go back to daily at some point, but for now this is better for me. It is hard to see it go up or not go down after a week, though, which happens sometimes because it is that one 'water weight' day or whatever. But I can handle one day a week of that more than every day!

sakuya3834 12-13-2006 12:19 PM

I weigh daily (usually) but I only record it when it goes down OR when it goes up from my lowest weight by more than 3 lbs....which it never has. I know my body fluxuates about 2-2.5 lbs upwards, but it's never been more than that. So I know if I go up by more than 2.5 lbs it's probably a real gain and not a fluxuation!

Tara D 12-13-2006 01:02 PM

Rockinrobin:
I have a Tanita BF-679 digital scale. I bought it at Bed, Bath, and Beyond. It gives weight by 0.2 pound intervals and gives a body fat percentage as well. It never varies more than 0.2 pounds if I step on it a couple times in a row. I bought it a few years ago, so I'm not sure if it is still available.

lilybelle 12-13-2006 01:13 PM

I weigh every Sunday morning.

jillybean720 12-13-2006 01:16 PM

Like most, it seems, I weigh every morning. I step on the scale with no clothes after peeing and before eating or exercising--to me, it makes sense that this is the absolutel most consistent I can be. Then I log my weight each day into Fitday (this is a new habit that just started in the last 2 weeks or so) so, like Mami, I can see the overall trend over an extended period of time.

I also go to TOPS meetings once a week and have my "official" weigh-in there. It's Thursday evenings, so I wear the same thing every Thursday (well, I go straight from work, so I wear the same black skirt and a tank top, but the color of tank top varies, and the shirt or sweater I wear over the tank top varies, but I take that off before I weigh). I weigh in at about 6pm, so I try not to eat anything after 2pm and not to drink anything after 4pm in order to have the most consistent results.

That is what I do too. I record my weight on Friday. The calendar is right beside the scale.

 I'm a daily "naked and starving" weigher!

BlueToBlue 12-14-2006 03:23 AM

I weigh myself twice a day--right before I go to bed and just after I get up in the morning. I consider that restraint. ;)

I'm also a naked, starving (in the morning at least), and pee-free weigher! In fact, if I exercise in the morning, I'll weight myself naked, starving, pee-free, and all sweated out from exercise. I sweat A LOT (sometimes more than two pounds of water) so I see some great lows when I do that!

webweevil 12-17-2006 06:15 AM

For those of you that weigh yourself daily:

Do you really gain weight temporarily when on your period or just before from water retention OR does your weight just stay the same, only showing weight loss for that week after your period is over?

rockinrobin 12-17-2006 07:35 AM

I have heard that you can gain up to 5 pounds during TOM. For me, I can not use it as an excuse. I have not seen any gain whatsoever during that time. Very strange as I have fibroids and am a heavy, heavy bleeder with horrendous, debilitating cramps, hope that wasn't too much information.

jillybean720 12-17-2006 07:41 AM

I have my TOM right now. It started on Thursday. I have mu TOPS meetings on Thursdays. Thursday night, when I weighed in at TOPS, I had lost 5.75 pounds from the previous Thursday. Here it is Sunday, and I haven't lost any additional weight, but it's only been 3 days. I think it is a very highly individual thing, as hormones can affect us all quite differently.

I used to use TOM as an excuse to eat more or to eat junk food. After all, it was the hormones making me want bad food  I think a lot of women do this, and it therefore becomes an excuse to gain some additional temporary weight before/during TOM. But me, I'm done messing with excuses, and it didn't affect my weight this time around.

Wolfena 12-17-2006 01:12 PM

Apparently I am the only one that weighs myself multiple times a day?? Like every single time I go in the bathroom (which is where my scale is)

I only 'record' my weight once a week - first thing in the morning after using the potty while I'm still naked.

But I can tell you how much my weight varies all day long, after eating meals, getting dressed, using the bathroom, putting my shoes on and off, having my TOM, etc (on average I "gain" 3-4 pounds from first morning weight til evening weight)

Thats kinda pathetic, isn't it :o

webweevil 12-17-2006 01:31 PM

Wolfena - how much weight do you gain when it is that time of the month? I know I retain water during this time, but I don't know just how much.

I do gain over TOM. when I used to be on the pill af started on a monday. I would be up from previous fri-mon, then super low on thurs, and by following monday be back to normal

I do find that how much I fluctuate (from TOM or normal fluctuations) decreases significantly if I am exercising and eating well. Just not prone to bloat.

Bobbolink 12-17-2006 03:41 PM

I weigh in just my undies every morning after going potty. I do not eat or drink any coffee before weighing in. It's surprising what one 8 oz. cup of coffee or water will do. I did a little experiment a while ago, weighed myself as usual, than drank a 8oz glass of water. Weighed myself again and I was naturally up 1/2 pound, so weighing yourself first thing in the morning is much more accurate.

I weigh myself in the morning (naked, after going to the bathroom and before eating or drinking anything) and then w/ my pajama's on right before i go to bed. I sometimes weigh myself throughout the day too, but not often.
At night i can usually tell wat ill weigh in the morning based on wat ive eaten that day (i usually weigh 3-5 pounds less when i weigh in the morning compared to wat i weighed the night b4).
Its really weird, ive gotten really good at knowing if ive gained lost or stayed the same. Ive started predicting wat the scale will say b4 i get on and ive never been more than a pound off. Its really weird cuz i can like "feel" when i gain, loose, or stay the same. Idk if that makes ne sense but i think its cool.

ennay 12-17-2006 04:19 PM

I can USUALLY tell too, I can tell if I feel bloated or not. Like this morning I am way down, but only because i havent worked out in 5 days, so I am way down on water weight.

Tara D 12-17-2006 04:40 PM

I can feel when I've gained/lost, too, and can predict my weight usually within 0.2-0.4 pounds! It's so weird isn't it! It's really shocking! I guess it means we've learned something about our bodies and that we're more in tune with our bodies! I guess if you do anything every day for a few months, you get good at it!

justcath 12-17-2006 04:44 PM

I am a naked, starving pee free weigher too- everyday - but only record on Wednesdays. I chose Wednesdays because my birth group for my youngest son has a weightloss Wednesday and it helps to be accountable to them. I put my weight into my tracker at extra pounds. I didn't record this week because TOM was here and I posted a 4 pound gain - all bloat! ack!!!

AnAbsoluteDiva 12-17-2006 05:55 PM

I weigh in once a month after a full session of sleep. Empty stomach, empty bladder.

love2scrap 12-18-2006 11:38 PM

I weigh once a week- at the gym. I have a scale at home and both scales are pretty much the same, but the gym's scale gives me a print out with fat loss, water info, etc.

Eiluj 12-19-2006 12:02 PM

I weigh twice a day. At night, I do a bodyfat check, which might not be accurate but which will predict the amount of weight I'll lose overnight. If my bodyfat reading is low, I will lose 2-4 pounds overnight. If it's high, I'll lose 1-2. The bodyfat reading is more a hydration reading, really. The better hydrated you are, the lower that reading will be (within a range).

In the morning, I do a "real" weigh-in and compare it to the night before for any strangeness.

That allows me to see if it's real weight or water retention or what.

Julie

I usually hold onto about 2 pounds, then it falls off like magic within the first day & a half. If I've actually lost weight that week, it'll look like I lost double on the scale!

emily445455 12-26-2006 11:37 AM

Right now I'm weighing in once a week, Fridays in the morning. But I just started a challenge on another diet forum which is weighing in every 10 days...so, we'll see which one I like better. :)
