  • Hey there everyone. I knew this forum was around here but for some reason I hadn't been over yet. I am so glad I did. I'm not the only calorie counting crazy loon! YEAAAA!!! OK so Dh thinks that I'm bordering on compulsive but maybe I am. I just had a baby ok forget the "just" she is 7 weeks old. Man I'm in denial but oh well. So I have all this baby weight to lose and so far it's being very stubborn. I now have to go back to work still very much overweight and nothing in my closet to wear literally! I am so not looking forward to clothes shopping in the next couple of days. I HATE buying bigger clothes. I kept holding out thinking I would lose something but it hasn't happened so since I go back to work this Saturday I can't put it off much more. Well, Thanks for listening and I'm sure I'll be around.
  • Whoa...slow down.

You did JUST have a baby. You don't even have your postpartum visit until 6 weeks-to be cleared for exercise, etc. Lighten up on yourself a bit. You just created another living being!!

It took you 9 months to gain your baby weight, and it will take a few months to get it back off-depending on how much you gained.

I also had a baby recently-Saber is my third, and he is now 6 months old. I have lots of experience losing baby weight.

Don't beat yourself up, first of all-if you can't fit into your old clothes. This is NORMAL, no one expects you to fit into your old stuff immediately after your baby is born.

I don't know how much you know about pregnancy-but your body actually goes through many changes-your hip bones and organs are slowly shifting back into their normal positions in your body (these change during pregnancy-even the positioning of your heart!) Your body is reducing its blood volume to its normal prepregnancy level...so many changes!

My first bit of advice, is to go out, and buy a couple outfits that look nice, and FIT. You will be nothing but depressed if you can't wear anything but your old maternity clothes and sweats. It doesn't matter if it is 2 or 6 sizes bigger than your old clothes-buy something that makes you look nice. It helps!

Second-slow down! A healthy rate of weight loss is 1-2 pounds per WEEK. Aim for that.

Thirdly-are you nursing? What is your activity level? These things will make your calorie needs differ from someone else...and it will help me to give you some guidelines.
  • I know EXACTLY how you feel. I had a baby 8 months ago and also wanted ALL my baby weight off immediately. And I thought that would happen too. Everyone said it would take at least a year to get back to my old shape and that is definitely turning out to be true. I would say resign yourself to it. It takes time, and people have been through it before. Those at work will truly understand why you're not in your old shape..its to be expected, especially after only 7 weeks. They are so cute when so tiny (as they are at 8 months too!), so enjoy it..it will not last long. Sounds like you know what you're doing calorie counting wise, so just keep at it and eventually you'll be back to normal (as I'm [I]hoping[I] I will be).
  • thanks girls. I know it takes time but I was hoping to lose at least a little bit by now. It took me 2 years the first time to go from 230 the day I had my son to 154 when he turned 2. I just wish that my body would remember what it is supposed to do weight loss wise.
I had to stop nursing after 2 1/2 weeks cause my son wasn't getting to spend any quality time with mom cause I was either nursing, pumping, or changing Madison. I felt like he was starting to resent her and since I've quit he is now more in love with his sister and wants to help mommy a lot more with her. He hasn't shown in true signs of jealousy which I am truly thankful for but we prepared him as much as we could and he's always been a great kid. I'm had post partum depression after having him and have not yet had to start taking my antidepressants again although there are days when I know that's my problem. It's not every day or very often at all so I'm comforted a little by that. Weight is my big contributing factor to depression these days so I've got my rx handy if I need it but it makes it so much harder for me to lose. Thanks again for listening as I spill my guts sorry.
  • Hillarie-it took me about a year to lose the weight from my first-I had her when I was 22...and it took me about 2 years to lose it from my second..I was about 25 I believe...it is definitely a little harder after each child, and as you get a little older.

With Saber, I am fully prepared to give it as long as it takes...because I am now 31, and I know it is going to be much harder/slower now than it was when I was 22.

Something positive I like to think about though, is that when you go slow and steady, and make really good changes in your lifestyle-you are creating a way to KEEP the weight off. If you crash diet, unhealthfully-trying to lose 10 pounds in 3 weeks...you really are not learning anything, you will most likely gain the weight back, and you are not getting "fit and healthy" which is different than "skinny".

It would be much better to lose 1 pound a week taking walks, drinking lots of water, eating a lot of fruit and vegetables, and learning a new way of life-FOR LIFE-than it would be to lose 10 really quickly...and then gain them back 3 months from now when you go off your "diet".

    Lifestyle changes are the key...

You can do this-just be patient with yourself. Take care of yourself as well, while you are going down the weight ladder. Don't wait until you have lost the weight to buy clothes, do your nails, etc. Do what you can to treat yourself, and make yourself look good the entire time. It definitely makes you feel better.
  • I also wanted to invite you over to our calorie counting chat thread-the particular one here that I post on, has been going since 2001!

We share daily support, tips, and motivate each other. Come join us!

  • First of all Aphil, I never even realized there was more then one chat thread going on here. Just curious, why have the 2 threads have never merged.? Hmmm, and how did I wind up on the one that I did?

Hillarie, congratulations on your new, yes very new baby. Gosh, give yourself a break. No really, give yourself some time. I know it's frustrating and you want it NOW, but good things come to those that wait. I also agree in finding things you can change for life. Get some real good habits going so that you can continue on for life. Good luck, looking forward to getting to know you. And enjoy that little bundle of yours.

By the way my "little" bundles of joy are 19, 17 and 15. I waited a loooong time to deal with the baby weight and then some. I'm glad you are trying to get a grip on it now.
  • I think I started the second one because I'm detail-y. They're both wonderfully supportive threads and I peek in at them both. There's a few of us who cross-over

When I came here in 2001, I started the Doin' It The Old Fashioned Way chat thread. At the time, the General Diet Plans section here at 3FC did not have a separate area for calorie counter, LAWL, Fat Smash, and a few of the other parts of it that are separated into their own section, like they are now.

It was the time when Atkins and low carb were REALLY big, and that was what almost everyone was doing...and old fashioned calorie counting was what always worked for me-so that is how the thread title got its name.

A few months later, I was asked to be a mod, and over time things grew, and we split the General Diet Plans area into a few segments, giving calorie counters their own area.

    *checking through old info*

    Okay...I am back.

About a year ago, Susan started the second calorie counting chat thread, so now there are two. That is how it happened.

I never really thought to merge them together...although I agree that it is a good idea. No need for two, really.
  • I've never even looked at the other thread. No time to right now, but I will check it out later. No merging in the future?

  • Susan and I were posting at the same time.

It makes no difference to me whether we merge them or not. I am very detailed as well here at home-I use a handwritten journal/log for my diet and exercise rather than Fitday. It isn't so much that I am not detailed-I am-it is that I travel a lot, and it does me no good to Fitday everything online if I am out of town at a dance seminar, or camping for 4 days in the summer, and have no computer access at that time. It makes it work better for me, if I have the log right in my purse with me.

We post our exercise, food, and other things on our thread, just like in the other one. They really aren't that much different.
  • Well Thursday is the start of a new month...........
  • Would you like me to merge the threads? Is that a hint?
  • Umm, I just read the current thread and I don't see that it is all that active. Perhaps YOU would prefer it merged? It doesn't make one bit of a difference to me. It might be nice though. Whatever anyone else wants I will of course abide by. Make it one, make it two, make it three, as long as there's something to post on. I leave it in your capable hands.
  • Which thread did you read? I actually just started the new Doin' It The Old Fashioned Way thread just a few hours ago...so there are only a handful of posts on it.

I just took a look, all the posts on the thread are less than 2 hours old-so it is more active than you think.
