My friends and I go to lunch a lot and it seems we end up at DG a lot. I'll be honest I'm not too fond of the food but I'm fond of the atmosphere and the conversation! I've had all the salads twice and they use only iceburg lettuce so it's not that wonderful... I'm sick of them! Is there anything else on the menu I can eat and not totally go into overload? Gotta love Southern food lol...
I want to avoid it too but one of my friends is moving this week and I want to see her before she goes!! BOOO... I was thinking of eating lunch beforehand and just going to hang out but I think they'll think I'm not eating and I don't want to cause any drama over lunch lol.
I think I might go with the chicken and just have them put everything on the side... hmmm yeah everything is fried!! LOL
Gotta love southern food in Hawaii I would go for the pulled chicken platter, ask for no sauce or on the side(it would be loaded with sugar), collard greens and a side salad (dressing on the side). That should be pretty good - calorie wise. If you won't eat the collard greens (an acquired taste perhaps), maybe the corn on the cob instead.
The beer can chicken sounds good. They say it is seasoned with spices, but they don't mention a sauce. Usually it's the sugary sauce that is the problem with bbq joints. Smoked bbq should be fine if they can serve the sauce on the side, but not all places offer that as an option. Sometimes coleslaw can be a good choice, but it really depends on the restaurant. What are the red mashers? I'm guessing smashed red potatoes, lol. If they don't add a lot of cream and butter when they make them, then you could eat some of those. If they interest you, you might ask the waitress how they are prepared, or call them in advance so you'll know when you get there.
I think the crab and shrimp boil might be okay - seafood that isn't fried is usually low in calories. Also possibly the turkey club sandwich if you hold the mayo (ask for mustard instead) and bacon and save half of the sandwich for tomorrow (or for dinner). Also possibly the jambalaya - it says it is made with grilled chicken and shrimp which should both be low in calories (but it probably has lots of rice, so save half for later).
Pay attention to the portion size. I generally try to limit myself to only half of whatever I am served in restaurants like this (i.e., that advertise oversized portions on the menu). Now that I am counting calories, portion sizes in restaurants are one my biggest pet peeves!
I LOVE collard greens (Ok I'm weird...) I was just worried they'd maybe smother them in butter?
I'm sure that they are cooked with some fat, maybe butter, but I would guess that it's some type of pork (bacon or bacon drippings maybe). Even so, that doesn't mean the calorie count would skyrocket.
geez, i am glad we don't have restaurants like that here! i would be the size of a house with southern cookin'!
i would go for the ceaser salad and get the dressing on the side. perhaps ask them to omit the meat - depending on how it is cooked.
i always get the dressing on the side and then dip the tip of my fork in the dressing, spear some lettuce and i am away. you get the taste, but minimal calories. do the same with the crab cobb salad or the iceberg salad.
Well... we went yesterday and I didn't do so well! I got them to grill me a chicken breast with no bbq sauce and I ate that with some hotsauce on a bun with lettuce and tomato (no problem there and it was pretty good)... BUT I asked for a salad instead of fries and they brought me a salad AND fries and I wasn't strong enough to send the fries back and ate about half of them. I felt ICKY for the rest of the day... it totally spiked my blood sugar. So I learned my lesson. Fries are EVIL!!! But lunch was fun anyway
Hmm....Now I don't know how it would be cooked; but in my opinion....the "Regional Pulled Chicken Sandwich" with salad as a side. I'm sure you could tell them what you don't want them to put on it...eg. mustard instead of mayo? Just a thought. Good luck with that!
ValRock -- Here's what I say about the lunch: yay for you!!!! You tried to fit in the kind of food you wanted. Okay, you didn't completely succeed. But, you've already figured out what went wrong (didn't send the fries back). Now you know what you should do the next time.
I try to make these kinds of days learning experiences. I don't always succeed, but try to learn from my mistakes. It is working, as I'm learning what works and doesn't work for me!!
Giving yourself the opportunity to screw up is an important part of this process if we're going to learn how to do this for life, imho.
Wow, that made my mouth water! We don't have those here (probably a good thing!). I'd go for the gumbo ceasar combo if it were my lunch. As for the dressing on the side, and ask for a wedge of lemon. I like my ceasar with a little lemon and a little dressing (it makes the dressing go farthere!).
