No, I haven't done the metabolizer thing. The closest place that has this is about 2-1/2 hours away. I just tweaked the numbers until the daily caloric intake was where I wanted to be. :)

Kimberly

slimcharm 01-28-2006 10:49 PM

I had a friend who did do the metabolizer test..she said it was simple albeit a bit nasally as they clip something on to your nose!

GonnaLooseitagain 01-29-2006 08:35 AM

yeah I also had my metabolism checked...mine is soooo low 1150/day!

So the theory behind this book, which is awsome, isnt working for me since I want to be around 150 so even if I take in 1500 calories per day, which I usually do (that is less than what they say to do) I dont lose weight.
So I am stuck right now and not sure what to do. I usually get between 1200-1500 calories per day and have not lost an ounce for the entire month of January! :(

KimberlyinMN 01-29-2006 02:50 PM

Yikes! Only 1150? That almost sounds like the reading was off or something. (At least to me.) Criminies... to LOSE weight, you'd have to eat something like only 900 calories a day. Or work out a LOT.

Kimberly

slimcharm 01-29-2006 10:39 PM

That is low. And since you have not lost weight on 1200-1500 cals, it may be correct. (Which most people can lose on)
So the question would be why? I think you need a vist to the doctor with a blood workup, etc.

GonnaLooseitagain 01-29-2006 11:05 PM

I have had blood workup, that is the problem....GRRR My thyroid is good, and being monitored CLOSELY by my dr, since if it even goes out of whack a little (like it did in OCT/NOV) I have terrible side effects from it. But yeah 1150 is SUPER low..I get sooooo discouraged sometimes. I wish there was something else I can do as I have hit this terrible plateau at 172 and CAN NOT get it to move...this is the longest one I have had yet. Although I do eat a pretty balanced menu most days, I still feel like I CANT eat if I want to stay at this weight, and especially if I want to loose anymore....it is very depressing at times. I wish there were something else I could check for.
Anyone know of anything else that could effect my metabolism?

lovedaname 01-30-2006 09:57 AM

Hang in there ladies

I just picked up the CQ book on Saturday and finished it last night. I have been working on my wieght since the beginning of the month. I have read alot of posts here and some have gotten my attention. PLEASE dont give up hope!!! I actully started the lower calories before I found out about the CQ book because it made perfect since......it takes 3500 calories to lose a pound so drop your calories and you are a loser. :carrot: When I first started I was WAY TO LOW on my calories only about 1000-1200 per day and I WAS ALWAYS HUNGRY but I started to fix that. I went to store and purchased some good for me food like lean beef, fruit and veggies - I am not a veggie person - but alas I am tring. Also I never eat breakfast - I hate breakfast!!! But I found a wonderful alternative to breakfast - I purchased a big container of Soy Protein powder, frozen unsweeted fruit and some plain yogurt mix that with some low fat milk - I dont think that I will ever be able to drink skim milk so for now I am sticking to 1% I mix all that in a blender and bingo I have a great protien shake for breakfast and I tell you 8oz of that fills me up SO WELL that I am not hungry!!!! So for everyone who likes the book keep up the good work and we will all be a great sucess - oh I am also working out 6 days per week 30 mins on the stepper (I have one at home) and doing resistance training with a resistance rope. Great way to tone!!! The stepper burns so many calories - according to Calorie King it burns 480 calories per 30mins!!!! If you dont have one try getting a jump rope - that burns...get ready for it...1120 calories in 1 hr!!!!! Now I know that no one probley can jump rope for and hr but it is a good way to burn the calories. Also I bought the Biggest Loser DVD workout on some advice of people in other forums I will be starting that tonight. GOOD LUCK TO ALL AND TOGETHER WE CAN DO THIS!!!!!!!!!!

Hi gonna loose - I was wondering are you eating breakfast in the morning because I have heard that if you dont you metabolism will stay very low until you eat something - I am not sure where I heard it from - and they do mention it in the CQ book pg 119 and 120. Just a thought????

KimberlyinMN 01-30-2006 11:01 AM

I'm not a vegetable fan either. I like romaine and spinach salads - and we have a salad every night with supper. I am also trying very hard to EAT vegetables. I "sneak" vegetables into meals that I am cooking. Well, I guess it isn't really sneaking because I'm hiding it from myself. LOL My biggest thing with vegetables is that I don't like CHUNKY vegetables. Like big chunks of green peppers, onions, tomatoes. If they are chopped up and added to something, no problem! My DH thinks I'm weird. Oh well, he knew this about me when he asked me to marry him. ;) I never really thought I had an issue with vegetables until he brought it up. Of course, he mentioned this to his mom, so now when we are visiting, she'll ask me if I'll eat such-and-such. I told her to just go ahead and make whatever she's making and I'll adapt. (Unless it's shellfish and then I'd say "no"... As my DH says, "She'll do the croppy flop." I'm allergic to shellfish - I think he means I"ll flop around on the floor, which isn't the case - I just can't breath because my throat closes up.)

Kimberly

PS. I DID make cut green beans last night. (Frozen, not from a can.) I nuked them with dill weed. Not bad, but...... Why can't vegetables taste like ice cream??

GonnaLooseitagain 01-30-2006 06:25 PM

Love-
Yes I eat 3 meals and 2 snacks per day, I usually have a big glass of water and breakfast within 30 minutes of getting up and I am usually around the 1200 calorie mark for the day. I have not lost a pound since I started aiming for 1200 calories. I did have the thyroid meds adjusted in Dec 05 and am getting ready to go in to have the bloodwork checked to see if this dose is right...I am just wondering if there is something else they can check also that would cause me to have such a LOW metabolism. Thanks.

I also do not eat many processed/refined foods. I have been cutting them out of my diet to be healthier and it just doesnt seem to be working. I eat whole wheat everything I can find, dont eat sugar, only 2-3 diet sodas per week and 60+ oz of water per day...I mean GEEZ how much healthier can I get..I eat tons of vegi's and just about 5-8 oz of lean meat per day. I get my 3 servings of milk/dairy....I guess it was easier to just eat and not think about all this, but now that I am, I would like to see the scale move....

NowOrNever! 01-30-2006 06:53 PM

Wow Gonna, that whole scenario just SUCKS! I've seen some other ladies post about the affect of hormone levels on metabolism. You might ask the doctor about that. I don't know how old you are, but some of the perimenopause things can start quite early in some women. If nothing else, it might be an avenue to check just to see.

The ONLY other thing I can think of suggesting is to maybe exercise first thing in the morning? Like...maybe it will help to rev your metabolism a bit through the day? (Exercise, then eat). Hmmm...this whole thing sounds like trying to get my old lawnmower engine to run..... (I hope you laugh at that--I would just be SO frustrated in your shoes).

Tracy

GonnaLooseitagain 01-30-2006 09:09 PM

Nowornever, Yes that did make me laugh...lol Thanks!

I will ask my DR about the premenapause thing, I am in my 30's (early) and had a hysterectomy in my early 20's so I guess that is a definate possibility. I am calling my DR tomorrow to get an appointment, so I will mention it.

AND YES! It does SUCK!!! Seems no matter what I do I FAIL lately when it comes to loosing...oh well, like I said at least I am THIS close and not THAT far away anymore.

jello2206 01-30-2006 10:25 PM

No more diets for me!!

After gaining some more weight while "dieting" - I decided that this is it - I am going to join the Calorie Queens!! I bought the book in December after reading about it here - really liked it - and then the holidays came - I finally got it out this week and reread it and liked it even more! I have been dieting for years and getting nowhere - I am tired of getting so hungry it sends me on a food binge! I set a dream goal of 145 pds. - which puts my calories at 1740. So I just rounded them off at 1700. It is a bit scary to think of starting to eat that when I have been told so often I needed to eat 1200! I feel like a big weight has been lifted off me tonight - I do not have to diet anymore! It will be interesting to see how my journing goes. I am in no hurry.

I tried a recipe tonight to get an idea of them - made the tuna casserole on page 261. It was wonderful!! DH liked it too! So easy to make - I will have leftovers of it tomorrow and am going to try and freeze a portion to see how works. I am excited. For once, I have not been starving all day or craving junk!

Looking forward to sharing this journey with all of you!

NowOrNever! 01-30-2006 11:52 PM

Hmm...that's interesting about the hysterectomy because technically, you ARE already in menopause (surgical menopause). But...I wonder just how much that is affecting your metabolism--DEFINITELY worth following up on. For you, I hope they find something out of whack that can be easily fixed and that gets you revved back up again. And YES, you have made such definite progress. You know, if you're already on hormones and your dosage was set at your pre-diet level, you might...at this new weight...be getting a dosage that is too high or too low for you now.

I'm crossing my fingers for a solution to be found!! You'll keep us posted, right?

Welcome Jello!

Tracy

GonnaLooseitagain 01-31-2006 08:58 AM

no I wasnt getting hormones since I still have my ovaries, but I have never had the hormone levels checked (I dont think I have at least) so when I go see my dr I will ask him about this.....thanks for bringing it up, since it happened so long ago I really dont ever think about it, I have gone most of my life without a menstral cycle so not having it is NOT unusal it is my NORM, so I will ask...thanks again.

And, yes I know I have made good progress that is the only part that keeps me sane some days..lol

slimcharm 01-31-2006 08:01 PM

Good for you jello!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Gonnaloose...(btw its lose not loose ..sorry thats the former teacher in me..not being rude..love ya!)
"Anyone know of anything else that could effect my metabolism?"
What meds are you taking? Also what about artificial sugars?
How about trying to take a quickie walk for 5 mins after each meal or something to get revved up.

Also you may want to consider insulin resistance..try cutting back more on carbs and upping protein and seeing what happens

How tall are you?

GonnaLooseitagain 01-31-2006 11:48 PM

yeah slim, I know it is lose, but sometimes I get ahead of myself when I type...lol I am also a teacher...so it is so bad of me to NOT watch out...but oh well! I am not worried about it since it is just the boards..lol I am on synthroid and I dont use artificial sweetners except in my 1 glass of senna tea in the morning, 1 tsp of splenda, and then I have 2 or so diet pepsi's per week. I am 5'6" tall and only in a size 10 so I am not huge by any means...I am going to ask my dr about the insulin resistance since this is something that I should consider. I do notice that now since I have added more whole wheat breads/pasta back into my diet that I have gained 1-2 pounds, so those will have to GO. My weight changes so much on a day to day basis, but always hovers around the 172-175 range....

I cant wait to go to the dr....I cant get in until Feb 16th! Oh well, I will keep truckin along..lol

Thanks to everyone who suggests things, I am making a list for the dr to follow up with.

slimcharm 02-01-2006 10:48 AM

At 5'6 and a 10..sounds like you are compact..so why worry about the scale number. Seems like you are at a good place.

GonnaLooseitagain 02-01-2006 11:46 AM

Slim, I personally am just NOT comfortable at this size, I feel good at an 6/8 around the 155-160lb mark, so that is what my goal is. I know I dont NEED to lose much more, but living the rest of my life at 1000-1200 calories a day is REALLY unreasonable to me. I dont mind doing it for a long time but I can not see myself sticking to it FOREVER...so I want/need to get my metabolism under some control so I can enjoy a *cheat* or unhealthy snack now and again...I mean I dont want to miss out on birthday cake or something just because myu body is STUBBORN...lol I know I can have those things, but I cant see for the rest of my life stressing about every little thing I eat. I want to get to a comfortable place with my size/weight/eating habits/control over food. I am so close but like I said eating such low calories the rest of my life does not sound good to me at all.

No kidding. I mean, if you have to live on those calories, you should AT LEAST be able to walk the runway for a living  At that metabolic level, being off by just a few calories a day will quickly add up :(

Yeah I agree, but you know at my all time lowest weight 135 in a size 5 back in 1994, I was FAR from "runway walking" I have a bigger frame which is fine...but I want to be able to eat like a normal person again eventually..lol

I did make an appointment to have my metabolic rate tested again next week since it hasnt been done since I started loosing weight in Aug 05. I am hoping it is UP at least a little, but I am not going to hold my breath for it.

Joycelyn 02-01-2006 04:13 PM

I have officially lost 9.5 pounds PAINLESSLY using the Eucalorics concept.

Since my goal weight is 140, I eat 1680 cals per day, however, I eat a ton of fresh (low starch) veg and fruit and I NEVER count those items. I got that from the Mayo Clinic food pyramid. Since fruits and veg are so good for you and also the foods lowest in caloric density (low cal), I don't bother stressing about the calories in them.

This plan is working like a charm for me. What I am eating now is the same I'll be eating in maintenance. I can live with this forever.

I suggest anyone on the fence, just read the book. I read it twice (highlighted important concepts the second time around), and now I'm about to try the recipes.

This is the first time in my life I am losing weight without absolutely any deprivation.

GonnaLooseitagain 02-01-2006 06:16 PM

Yeah it is a SUPER plan I love the concepts behind it. I just donated the book to my public library since I am done reading it

slimcharm 02-01-2006 09:30 PM

Joycelyn that is awesome! Are you eating more protein to keep in control or are you following the guidelines they give for what to eat?

slimcharm 02-02-2006 07:05 AM

BTW Joycelyn..what are you doing for exercise? Thanks

Joycelyn 02-02-2006 10:51 AM

Slimcharm, I am a lacto ovo vegetarian, and through trial and error, I learned that higher protein intake makes me feel the best. I do NOT follow the Calorie Queens breakdown of how much protein/fat I should be eating. I simply took my goal weight of 140, multiplied it by 12 and got the 1680. Plus like I said, I don't even count most veggies and fresh fruit.

I do not follow their menus at all. I've always rebelled against stuff like that.

I eat a lot of Morningstar Farms and Boca meat substitutes. They are high in protein. I also eat a lot of low fat dairy and beans, tofu, etc.

I'll also add that to make counting calories even faster, I convert them into points. I do not use the U.S. Weight Watchers points formula, which is too complicated and punishes you for eating "good" unsaturated fats. Instead I use the United Kingdom points formula which measures only calories and saturated fat. I have relatives in England, and had the at-home version of their program lying around, and was intrigued with the UK method of counting points. Now because I'm a vegetarian, I simplify their method even further and don't count saturated fat, I just convert calories into points. For example, 1 point equals 70 calories. 70 x 24 = 1680 calories. So instead of counting to 1680 I only count to 24. I lost their points slide rule, but have the easy mathematical formula of converting calories into points. I'm in a rush writing this, and hope I'm not confusing you to death, but I really love counting points instead of calories.

I also walk a lot, and that's it. I'm thinking of joining Curves to tone up.

This morning I weighed in and lost another .5 pound for a total of 10 pounds. I have a lot to lose, but because I'm eating now the way I'll be eating at maintenance, I know I can do it!

Same here! I don't like to follow anyone's menus unless they're mine. :) I just know that I need to eat at the most 1860 calories a day. My doctor gave me a goal range of 140-150, so I'm going with the 150. When I was 16, I lost 115 pounds on Nutri/System. My goal weight from them was 118 but when I got to 148, I looked all bony. I'm 5'6".

Kimberly

Joycelyn 02-02-2006 12:29 PM

Kimberly, I know what you mean. Kirstie Alley is on the cover of the new Good Housekeeping or Ladies Home Journal (I always confuse the two), and there's an excellent article inside where she talks about weight loss and being too thin.

140 is my goal weight but if I can get down to 150, I would still look great. My highest weight was 207, but I've lost 10 pounds. When I was younger I got down to 120, which I now know is ridiculous. I could only maintain that weight through starvation. Like the Calorie Queens say in their book, think long and hard before you pick the same goal weight you were in highschool. Even at 150 I will look curvy but great.

I am very excited with this way of eating, because after years of yo yo dieting, and trying every diet under the sun, I've finally hit on something that is truly liveable.

I emailed the Calorie Queens and they say they will have a forum soon on their website. Because they have someone coming in only on the weekends to work on their website, it's taking a long time to get started. I'm really looking forward to their forum!

slimcharm 02-02-2006 09:34 PM

And also check out the forum at yahoo groups..there is a calorie queens forum there!

I am really happy for you Joycelyn..I got a bit off track here.

My goal is to be 135..so thats 1600 cals per day..but if I eat 1500 I can go out and splurge one night a week. I have done really well but did get off track and am hopping back on.

Thanks for the inspiration!

Calorie Queen Web Site Updates

The Calorie Queen website has added some updates. There is a forum, recipes, and there are some food items for sale. Check it out :)!

slimcharm 02-03-2006 07:19 AM

thanks for the update on CQ site..that may be the kick in the pants I need.

1dayatatime 02-05-2006 03:44 PM

Calorie Queens has made it into "Woman's World" magazine. Finally, that magazine has a eating plan I could follow! :)

slimcharm 02-05-2006 06:56 PM

LOL
I cant tell you how many WW mags I have bought due to the new MIRACLE DIET..
But that stopped some time ago when I got CQ book.
I just rushed out and got the magazine..2 copies!
cant wait to read it..

1dayatatime 02-06-2006 08:17 AM

Ya know, thinking back over the years, about 7 or 8 years ago they had a plan that involved breathing to lose weight. It taught you how to breathe to fill your lungs and getting oxygen into your body (aka aerobic). You did this a certain way with so many repetitions. I actually lost 5 pounds in two weeks doing that BUT it wasn't for long term and couldn't be sustained without changing my eating habits. My thick skull didn't get that most important fact at the time. :)

Edit: The plan didn't include a menu - it was just the breathing exercises.

Back in December I came across a WW magazine that had the Reverse Diet Solution. Technically, the theory is good (eat your largest meal at breakfast, a medium meal at lunch and a small meal at supper), but the idea was also to eat a supper-like meal at breakfast. Ugh. I just can not envision eating leftovers for breakfast (unless it's pizza). Supposedly the woman who came up with this lost about 100 pounds and didn't have ANY sagging skin. Hmmm... somehow I just don't believe that. When I lost 115 pounds when I was a teenager, I had some extra skin. Maybe she was lucky. ??

I'll stop and get this latest magazine tomorrow. :)

Kimberly

slimcharm 02-06-2006 02:11 PM

LOL 1dayatatime..there are several different weight loss plans that say that breathing is all you have to do..OXYCISE is one..and I cannot think of the other one..but I will say that the gal that developed Oxycise used to swear by something else..Jill Childers or something like that!

I got the WW magazine and found it to not be the best of articles..But glad I got it.

KimberlyinMN 02-06-2006 02:30 PM

I stopped at the grocery store today, but they still have the Feb. 7 issue out. Can you believe that?!!! It's already Feb. 6th. SHeeeesh! LOL :dizzy:

I did ask and I guess the new magazines come tomorrow. So.. I'll stop in after TOPS.

Kimberly

1dayatatime 02-06-2006 05:53 PM

No, the article wasn't the best. I agree with ya there. But it was probably enough bait to increase book sales. :)

Yohoney 02-06-2006 07:13 PM

Hi everyone,

I keep seeing threads about this book and thought I'd pop in and see what it's all about. I just ordered it from Amazon and was looking around at the author's website. I noticed lots of their recipe's call for "CQ" ingredients. Are these special products you have to buy in order to make these recipes?

1dayatatime 02-06-2006 08:31 PM

The book contains recipes that call for normal ingredients...not their premade ingredients. At least mine doesn't and I've bought it since the beginning of the year.

I also noticed they have a CQ consultant deal. I'm not a saleman but I think that might be interesting. :)

:welcome: to 3fc!!!
