Do you drink diet soda?
Okay, okay, I would first like to say that I know the dangers of diet soda on health, etc. But every once in awhile I drink one. Like today. Give me credit, though, this was only my third one in 2013. =)
My question is, though, does anyone drink diet (zero-cal) soda regularly? I have no intention of taking up that hobby, however I would like to know if anyone has seen any impact (negative or not) from drinking it regularly while calorie counting. |
I drink Coke Zero (sometimes the cherry) and Sprite Zero which I guess are technically diet soda. I do Diet Coke and Diet Pepsi too if that's all a store has. I have about 1 can every other day as a treat.
I always drank full calorie soda before I started my diet. Drinking the no calorie ones has had no effect on my weightloss or cravings as far as I can tell. |
I drank diet soda throughout my entire weight loss and never noticed a problem. (I drank it before weight loss, too, combined with thousands of calories of food! :))
I still drink about a diet soda a day in maintenance. I drink much less in winter, when I don't want them because I'm cold, and then my summer consumption goes higher. Some people say they notice an increased craving for sweets when drinking diet soda, but I've always felt they had the opposite effect: Sometimes a Coke Zero is my "dessert" and I can stop there. I don't fool myself that they're healthy. I know they're expensive and not the best choice. However, it's a compromise I've made with myself - I've changed so much about my lifestyle and food choices, so a diet soda a day is the one vice I still get to keep. :) |
No Soda here;) was a Major Regular Coke drinker before starting Ideal Protein....had to give it up ....and am saving a ton of money ! Cuz no Soda is purchased ....and now no one drinks it here!:

re:
Yep, I drink a lot of diet. I gave up caffeine though so at least now that's one monkey off my back with caffeine free only....
It has not had any effect on my diet. In fact, the fizzy actually fills me up in the evening when I may have the urge to eat something else. |
My diet is so restrictive that I enjoy the variety in diet drinks. I drink 1-2 diet Snapples a day. They are 10 calories a bottle.
|
I used to drink them all the time! But I gave up when I started dieting in case it made me want to slip back. I have them once in a while as a treat but they're always diet drinks. I do drink a lot of caffeine to get me through a day at work though! Need to cut back on that :)

I started drinking Diet Coke w-a-y back, what, maybe 1981 or 1982? I have not had a full sugar soda since, though I do realize that diet soda is not a great choice. But it's a 'choose your poison' in my opinion. Last night, when my husband was having ice cream, I had a Diet Dr. Pepper Cherry, it was delicious.
Oh i see your question was 'regularly'. Yeah, I guess so, there can be a few days when I won't have any soda, but instead diet Snapple powder, that you mix yourself. Then I might have 1 or 2 cans of diet soda some other day (if it's in the house). |

I drink diet soda almost every day with no ill effect on weight loss or maintenance. |
Yes but mainly on the weekends. Occasionally during the week (Like after my therapist appointment). Anyways my daily intake is mainly water. (I buy mine like at fast food-just for the drinks not the food-though occasionally a snack-because my medications make canned soda taste HORRIBLE)
|
I drink diet drinks quite a bit...I find it's one of the few things in my diet I can have as much of as I want (0 calories!). I'll have 2 cans of Diet Coke or Diet Cream Soda a day. I still get plenty of water, too. I have never noticed it being a hindrance to weight loss, nor have I noticed an increase in sweets cravings. I hardly ever crave sweets. However, I don't really have a big sweet tooth to begin with, so it might be different for other people.

I was a huge Diet Coke drinker - like 4 - 6 cans a day. I was told by my coach to stop immediately. Cold turkey. So that is what I did (this is my first week of IP). Oh how I miss it! I think that I am hungrier without it. Could my coach be wrong?

I drink diet coke all the time, and it hasn't affected my weight loss so far.
|
Moderation is key and also the changes you're making need to fit with YOUR life. It is better to allow yourself to have a diet coke and actually enjoy it than going cold turkey and perhaps falling off the bandwagon as a result of feeling deprived.
I have the occasional diet coke/pepsi but also drink seltzer when I want something fizzy. Do what works for you. It may not be the best beverage ever but if it is replacing regular pop or a calorie laden beer then why not? |
Yea, I still do regularly- one or two a day or every other day, depending and it needs to be caffeine free due to my acid reflux so usually diet 7up or sprite zero.
|
I used to drink one diet pop every day for years. I just stopped last month. It didn't hinder my weight loss or maintenance. I finally stopped, because it was one of the last unneccesary chemical foods/drinks that I was consuming.
|
Nope. I hate the taste, LOATHE the diet yucky taste, and fake sugar hates me back; it bloats me, makes me poop :o -- well I guess if I was constipated, super bad, I could drink a diet pop :dizzy:
I think that stuff is poison! And even most gum have Sucrose. I started buying gum online that has xylitol as a sweetener (yup, it is expensive, but I am not feeding poison to my kids!) So please step away from that diet!! :D |
I used to be addicted to it. I hate to be addicted to something so I decided to stop, cold turkey, on Feb. 13 of this year. It was hard but I don't miss it anymore.

Sucralose is a modified form of sucrose so the body doesn't absorb it. Sucralose isn't often in sugar free gum. It's usually aspartame and maltitol. The sugar alcohols (maltitol and sorbitol) are notorious for causing diarrhea if over consumed. Perhaps this is what you're thinking of? Anyway, I love diet soda. Drink it all the time (1 a day or 1 every 2 days). No ill effects and it really helps me stay on track! Like others have said, it makes me feel full (if gassy!), and it hits that sweet craving spot without the nasty effects of regular sugar. My favourite is Vanilla Coke Zero which isn't sold in Canada so I have to go to the States for it. Yum yum! |
I drink them sometimes but I don't really care for the carbonation. I'm also trying to lower my added sugar intake and diet sodas make me crave sweets.
|
We were told after my father had his stroke that the massive quantities of aspartame he was consuming led to a drastic reduction in his thiamine levels and contributed to his problems. Granted he was drinking 4 or more litres a day. I went to full sugar regular coke after that, and drank way too much of it. I gave up the pop even before I started to diet. Now I have the occasional one as mix for an alcoholic drink, or the occasional can of cherry coke, but I find about half way through it I feel ill.
|
I drink Pepsi max. Mostly on weekends but it happens during the week too. I used to drink a lot of regular coke, that was my addiction. Decided to trade it in for something without calories, so Pepsi max it was. It doesn't affect my weight loss, except for the fact that it helps keep my after-dinner sweets cravings away :)

Ooh, Whistler water eh? I'll have to try that sometime this year when I go there.
I drink about 1 diet soda a day. I drink it for the mild caffeine effect if I don't want high caffeine coffee or hot tea (I prefer cold drinks, especially before/during long walks or hikes) It helps me to wean off having too much caffeine in coffees and getting tolerant to caffeine. Edited to add: it hasn't slowed my weight loss as far as I know |

And good to hear all the replies. I never ever bring soda into our house. My only consumption of diet soda is when we eat out, which is really rare as it is. But I just wanted confirmation that it doesn't screw up calorie counting. I know its not healthy, but a break from the gluten free oat bran and organic veggies is nice every once in awhile, ya know? ;) |
No I quit drinking soda a few months ago for good. I ended up having headaches pretty regularly for a couple of weeks but then I haven't had any trouble since! I also no longer feel like I want soda either, it's not appealing to me anymore. :)
|
Nope. I find that when I drink artificial sweeteners I completely lose my ability to drink regular water. So I had to cut myself off cold turkey.

I drink cherry coke zero and it has never interfered with my weight loss. I am, however, currently cutting back on it - not because I think it is unhealthy - because I want to cut out caffeine and I felt I was spending too much money on it. I still drink it or coke zero when I go out to eat.
|
I used to drink a ton of diet soda, several a day and nothing else I almost never drink anything but water (and one cup of coffee) now and haven't for a few years, I did not notice any change in my diet success or failure, I just knew if wasn't good for me so it was something that was unhealthy to eliminate. Plus it saves a lot of$$$ not buying it.

It turns out I need the caffeine. My medication causes focusing issues. Can't get my school work done. So it's like having ADHD but I can't take those medication because of my bipolar (It will trigger a manic episode and that's bad). And caffeine is the only thing that seems to help me focus on my school work. But my meds also make me caffeine sensitive so I can only drink 2 cans a day... i think. I'm still figure it out. It may be 1 can. It depends how tonight goes.
|
I drink three 20-ounce bottles of Diet Coke every day. It has no discernible impact on my weight loss efforts. What it does do is to wake my sleepy butt up. Right now, I freely admit being addicted to caffeine and I also freely admit that I have no intention of cutting it out or cutting back. The times in my life that I haven't had caffeine have been awful. I get severe headaches to the point of vomiting. I'll pass on that.
|
I'm drinking a Diet Coke right now:D. I find them filling, especially room temperature Diet Coke. I drink maybe one every couple of days...
|
I drink Crystal Light with vodka as a low-cal alcoholic drink. I drink once a week so I feel it can't hurt!

rarely, but I used to all the time until I started to watch what I eat. I had one diet soda about 2 weeks ago and omg, it made me feel literally alive and happy. I felt so good after drinking it. It was a can of happy! lol I don't get it, drinking water doesn't make me feel that way, but oh boy, that soda sure did!
. |
I LOVE LOVE LOVE diet coke but can not drink it. When I drink diet soda I crave real sugar. So it's best for me to just stay away.
|
Yes. I have about one diet coke a day....and it has not affected my weight loss.
