Zero calorie noodles

I've ordered them and they have arrived. Now what? Anyone else eating them?

124chicksinger 02-26-2012 11:19 PM

Find a few recipes online and there ya go. Hungry girl does a faux alfredo (which recipe reads nothing like alfredo) but it gets good reviews. You know you have to rinse them well before using, to get the aroma rinsed off, right? I hear they absorb flavor from whatever they are cooked with, so they are more of a vessel for sauces, etc. than something that would add flavor to the meal and, of course, they add bulk so you'll feel full.

Here's hoping you enjoy them.

Satine 02-29-2012 10:17 AM

so have you had them yet TooBig? I wondered how they tasted...don't want to buy them and waste money ...I am a picky eater

Munchy 02-29-2012 12:06 PM

I think the trick is to have them in an Asian style noodle bowl - make a stir fry with a lot of veggies, maybe some protein, and add the rinsed and dried noodles with some broth and stir fry sauces (hoisin, sriracha, oyster, etc). I like to top mine with a poached egg - they're similar to ramen. I wouldn't, for example, top them with marinara. That flavor doesn't fit with these noodle for me.

If you don't like the texture, you can take the rinsed and dried noodles and spray a nonstick skillet with some oil spray, then crisp them slightly so you end up with something like Hong Kong crispy noodles

124chicksinger 02-29-2012 11:15 PM

Oh, munchy, you have made these noodles look and sound....delicious.

Munchy 03-01-2012 01:16 PM

Ha! Thank you :)

I don't exclusively use them, even in my noodle bowls, but I think that a lot of people don't like them because they expect them to be more like Italian pasta and they're really not that similar other than in shape.

Oh, I always use the House Foods Tofu Shirataki (20 cals/serving) because it's found at my local Asian grocery store, but I just came across this:

http://www.hungry-girl.com/newsletters/raw/1438

Apparently the Miracle Noodles have a different texture.

LEESE 03-02-2012 05:58 PM

OH BOY glad I found this thread !

Laura78 03-02-2012 06:53 PM

Hmmm, does anyone have a link to these? I wonder if I can find them in Canada!

I live in Montreal and I can find shirataki at quite a few local Asian grocers (Thai Foo, Marche Eden) as well as at IGA under different brands. IGA has them next to the tofu and salad dressings in the refrigerators.

Omg I love you. Now I know where I can have them without buying online. Thanks god.

lin43 03-04-2012 05:37 PM

How can anything you eat be zero calories? Just curious.

kidjng 03-04-2012 05:55 PM

Not sure about zero "calories" but the last time I ate about half a bag or a bit more it was zero WW points. Maybe some brands claim to be zero calories.

Cool, I'll have a look at my grocery store next time I go. Thanks!

There is a link on the right hand side of this page that is offering, through the month of March only, a free digital download of their cookbook and meal plan. I just downloaded it onto my iPad. They say it is a $29.99 value!

LiannaKole 03-07-2012 08:30 PM

If these are those shirataki noodles, I've tried them and did NOT like them. The texture was nothing like noodles and more like rubber (which was okay, actually), the taste was blah (which, again, didn't bother me much), and after eating them they sit like a freaking ROCK in my gut and made me nauseous because of it (NOT okay with me).

I don't ever have the desire to eat them again (and I rinsed and pan-cooked the heck out of mine). But I'd try them, because if you like them it'd be a great dish!

PinkLotus 03-07-2012 10:41 PM

I tried those noodles and thought they were disgusting!!!! I do know some people who like them (or at least find them tolerable lol) but I found them to be pretty terrible.

gardend1va 03-09-2012 08:01 AM

There are regular zero calorie yam flour shirataki noodles, and a tofu shirataki variety of noodle that has 20 calories per serving. Many people prefer the tofu variety over the regular zero calorie shirataki. I have tried both and do prefer the tofu noodles, but both can be used, especially if the somewhat firm/rubbery texture is not objectionable. The key, as Munchy pointed out previously, is to use them in recipes where their flavors harmonize.

I did have a nice dinner yesterday of homemade turkey chili over tofu angel hair shirataki, and did not detect any "off" flavor coming from the noodles to ruin the meal. It left me comfortably satisfied all evening. I think if you combine the noodles with something very flavorful, such as a thai soup or spicy chili type sauce, they are pretty good.

You know, I take back my good comments about those noodles. Maybe I didn't rinse them enough this time, but I put them in some lentil soup last night and it was so foul I couldn't gag them down. The texture, that hard, rubbery consistency combined with the slightly fishy smell they exude really almost made me physically sick. I don't know what I was thinking the last time I had them...they didn't seem to have a taste or smell that time. The spicy flavors of the chili must have masked any residual odors, I guess. Or maybe I was hungrier and wolfed them down too fast for my taste buds to catch up.

This time? Not so much. Then I saw this thread and just HAD to put in my additional comments! :barf:

Ha! I don't think I've ever eaten them without some oyster sauce added to them :)
I don't know that I'd eat ramen with lentil soup, so I never thought to put them together!

I like the combination of beans and pasta...think pasta fagioli or chili mac, but lentils and tofu...never again. Blecccchhhhhh.

ringmaster 03-31-2012 03:27 AM

never tried these but I think I seen them in the grocery store before, I'll have to check again.

what I like as a pasta substitute is spiral/spaghetti cut zucchini. little higher in calories than these noodles, but atleast you can count it as a vegetable serving or 2. It can be used with marinara sauce or with stir fries and pretty much absorbs the flavors it's mixed with. probably wouldn't work in soups though.

toobig 04-01-2012 06:33 AM

I fixed the noodles last night. They were pretty bad.

mammasita 04-02-2012 11:45 AM

you can order them from amazon if they can't be found locally.

I was wondering if anyone got an upset stomach from all of the fiber these things are made from...that much isolated fiber would probably bother my tummy. I may give them a try at some point but I will make sure to watch how much I consume at once.

toobig 04-02-2012 07:26 PM

I ordered mine from amazon

CIELOARGE 04-09-2012 01:04 PM

I tried them and they are just not for me. I like zucchini noodles waaay more! I liked them so much that I eat them 3 nights in a row :D

Those zero calorie noodles are just...:barf: I can't handle the texture or smell.

Candy5 04-09-2012 01:06 PM

Zucchini noodles? aka spaghetti squash? Just wondering-wanting t make sure there aren't other things out there I don't know about! Thanks:)

CIELOARGE 04-09-2012 01:20 PM

Spaghetti squash and zucchini noodles are different.

Cut green zucchini with a Julienne cutter and microwave for 2 minutes (I use a microwave steamer ;) )

Put whatever sauce you want and they will taste amazing! The texture is great too.. they are virtually calorie free (20 calories for a huge plate)

Same here. Now I'm seeing them all over the place. Wish I would have tried 1 bag before spending money on all of that.

CIELOARGE 04-09-2012 02:07 PM

LAgreeneyes: I bought mine at Safeway the 1st time... For some reason they were OK, but the 2nd time I just couldn't stand the texture. I gave them a try again recently with no luck, because they were just uneatable :(

Oops!!

Oh well, we all make mistakes. If anything just donate them... So they don't go go waste. Somebody MUST like them.

Tontus94 04-09-2012 02:44 PM

I tried them this week too and didn't like them. The texture maybe me think of chewing on a worm, not that I have ever chewed one, just what I'd think it'd feel like ;)

I was really hoping to like them!

I'll have to try the zucchini noodles.

Is spaghetti squash sweet? Or is it more like zucchini?
