Allrecipes and calorie counting?

  • I use a lot of recipes from Allrecipes, and have recently started calorie counting.

Does anyone know if the nutritional information that is provided with a recipe there is accurate? Obviously, if you substitute/add/take out ingredients, it would change, but the recipes, as written...is the nutritional information accurate?

If it is, it definitely would make things easier.
  • I have checked their recipes a few times and they are usually quite accurate...20-50 calories off.
  • I'd forgotten that they have calorie info there. Good to know it's usually accurate! This will make supper less of math exam.

Not to hijack this thread but I follow a low calorie blog/recipe site and had been going with the authors calorie counts. I decided to sit down and actually count calories based on the products in my house and found that most of her recipes are off calorie wise...sometimes by up to 50 calories. I want to be accurate since I don't want to be over, though I realize there is always a margin of error when it comes to calorie counting. Is it ok to just go by what is already set or do most people go through and double check every recipe?
  • Thanks for the info! Now I know to add about 50 calories to a recipe.

If it's cooking light or eating well, I just follow their counts. If it's a blog by one person, for example, I'll count myself.

    Thanks
  • I would never think of double-checking a recipe if the calories have already been calculated. Even if they're off by 50, such errors should all average out over time. I only want to think about calories when it's enjoyable to me (which it sometimes is). If it becomes a burden I'm not interested.

    F.
  • i really think that, in the long run- 50 calories is far too little to worry about.
were not talking about 1000's of calories, if you're really worried about an extra calorie or two- take a lap around the block! only takes 5 mins :P
