After a few successful weeks of calorie counting, my reflux decided to flare up in a huge way. Unfortunately I need to eat, eat, eat when it does this and meat seems to keep the pain away the best. So....I am now back up to 148. Just wondering if anyone else has reflux and if it affects your calorie counting?
That's funny, I thought I was the only one who found relief for acid reflux by eating!! Sometimes I can't tell hunger apart from acid reflux. Anyway, the only other thing that helps me is chewing sugar free gum.
Oh yeah..sugar free gum helps me a lot. I have been dealing with this for six years. I have been on every ppi....just started dexilant 2 months ago and don't think it is gonna work. I have good days and bad days, but I am pretty much in pain every day. When I am very bad, like today, eating is the only thing that gives me any relief. It sounds crazy...but a cheeseburger from Cookout is like 100% relief for me. Go figure!!
Congrats on your weight loss!! I have about four inches of belly fat and have often wondered if that caused my reflux. I don't think anyone knows much about this disease.
I use to suffer badly from acid reflux, heartburn, stomach ulcer but since I changed my eating and started exercising, I am proud to say I no long suffer with any of it
onderchic....as I sit here in INTENSE PAIN typing this....I need to ask.....
Exactly what did you do....please describe your eating habits/exercise....at this point, I would follow any regime to get out of this pain.
May I ask were you on meds for reflux? I would be beyond happy if I could get off these drugs.
ETA: I was on some medicine for it but I forget the name..maybe Tagamet but not sure And I was always eating tums, drinking alka seltzer and things like that, even at times I would drink baking soda and water :/

I used to get horrible acid reflux I'd wake up in the middle of the night thinking I was dieing YES actualy dieing! I'd start gagging and coughing and couldn't catch my breath and had acid eating away at my throat ugh it's awful!
I have been on 3 different meds for it an none of it ever worked I'd usually end up downing pepto bismal every night before going to bed- I notice my trigger foods used to be tomato based things
spagetti sauce, pizza sauce, chili, things like that..
however now that I count my calories and make healthier versions of things I have not had it since and I do not take any medicines at all for it I haven't had to buy a bottle of pepto in motnhs! for me I had to buy a new bottle every few days! here is the real kicker i STILL eat marinara sauces and I still eat chili Iv'e found new ways to prepare them I'm not sure what it is exactly but now I can eat anything and not get it. because everything that used to give it to me I have found healthier ways to make them it seems to agree with me better
I every now and then still get a mild case of heart burn or indigestion and feel a little burpy- but it's very mild and goes away pretty quickly I've also noticed sleeping more elevated at night helped it tremendously
I found an acid reflux diet online which basically is just healthy eating, so I am very encouraged. I have been on EVERY acid refllux drug!
By the way, I ate like crazy this week (food keeps the acid down for me) and just knew I had gained. Well, I did my weekly weigh in this morning and it was 146.5...same as last week. Didn't lose....but I am shocked I didn't gain.

Onederchic,
I just read your journey and even took notes!! I am really desperate to get in better health. I really love beans, but I don't see them listed as food you don't eat or foods you do eat. What do you think?
Also, I appreciate your attitude about exercise because some people really do have to start at 5 minutes walking in place, you know?
Do you mind if I ask...do you still take meds for high blood pressure? The reason I ask is in addition to my reflux drugs, I also take meds for blood pressure and cholesterol. I really would like to be off everything. Even though I am 5'2" and 146.5 which obviously is not obese or anything, I know I have way too much belly fat (my waist goes between 34 and 35 inches). I am not sure if my health issues are from the fat but common sense tells me I have to be better off if I get my weight down.
Anyways, thanks so much for your help. I am really hoping you say you eat beans every day
Beans are fine but for me, they give me uhh really horrendous gas so I choose to pass them up
I do not take any meds for high blood pressure any longer The only prescribed medication I will be taking, starting on Monday, will be for hypothyroidism.
I have some cheese and milk but not a lot. I don't think anything is wrong with it, I just choose to spend my calories on foods that are low calorie that I can have in high volume because I like to eat a lot
Oh my. I'm surprised at your weight that you suffer so. I thought my weight was the main contributor. I did have terrible reflux and my BP was 155/105. Both problems have resolved, so I'll add my bit.
For the reflux, mine greatly reduced through following the South Beach Diet (healthy carbs) and quickly. That was several years ago. I quit SBD and quickly learned my reflux was caused by carby foods like bread and pasta. Then I started counting calories and expected the reflux to take care of itself quickly like it did with SBD. It didn't happen quickly, but it did happen.
For me, my reflux is completely in control when I eat only healthy carbs (nothing processed) and when I eat more frequent meals. I eat six mini meals a day instead of three larger meals.
For my BP, honestly, the best thing in the world has been intense exercise. The fastest way I brought it down was with HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training). Through HIIT you go all out for 30 seconds, rest one minute etc for a total of 12-20 minutes. By all out I mean sprints on a bike, running, on an elliptical or even just up and down the stairs as fast as you can go. It's something you couldn't possibly maintain more than 30 seconds at a time. This form of exercise should only be down two days a week, three times if you're nuts. It's an awesome form of exercise and my BP responded very fast as did my HR. My BP came down from 155/105 to 100/50 as of my last reading and my resting HR came down from 85 to 46. Your blood pressure should come down with any form of exercise, but I found high intensity to work the quickest. Walking, running, biking, the elliptical, any cardio activity is great for BP.
