Snack in your purse??

Does anyone keep a snack on there purse in case of hunger??? If so what do you keep?? I need an option cause i get hungry on my way home

SarahD140 06-14-2010 10:44 PM

Nuts!! Try almonds or something like that. If you take an insulated lunch pack with you, try part-skim cheese sticks. And I am trying to drink water when I get hungry, as a means to try and reduce calories... if that makes sense. No worries, i'm sill eating PLENTY... sigh

Rtsmme4life 06-14-2010 10:49 PM

I always carry the individual crystal light packs to add to bottled water (5 cals a serving) and I just found some Nabisco Newtons:Apple Cinnamon Fruit Crisps (Only 100 calories!). They also come in Mixed Berry but I LOVE the apple. It's a great low cal snack with a bottle of regular water or Propel. Hopes this helps!

Here is a picture!

kendra 06-15-2010 12:08 AM

I either carry fiber one bar or a south beach protein bar.

roxmysox 06-15-2010 12:14 AM

I second the fiber one bars! I carry a couple, because my toddler likes them too!

Cglasscock1 06-15-2010 12:39 AM

I carry the small packs of peanut butter and honey crackers (200 calories).
If I don't get to eat lunch, I eat them and count them in my calorie allotment for the day. Also, I'm never without bottled water or sugar free tea in my car because in Florida it's 95 degrees right now.
If I did not do this, I may grab something in a convenience store or fast food place that I may regret. It really helps me.

grrrkgrrrl 06-15-2010 03:46 AM

i either carry a nut bar or if i know a priori that i'll be gone for a while and that i'll be bound to get hungry, a banana

srmb60 06-15-2010 05:05 AM

Hard boiled eggs ... in my purse. Yup, I do.

Vladadog 06-15-2010 06:52 AM

An apple and a stick of colby chedder is my standard snack.

RollTideRoll 06-15-2010 07:27 AM

If I know I'm gonna be gone, I take an apple and peanut butter, if I don't know, I'll stop at a convenience store and grab a very small bag of potato chips (we have some around here for 120 calories for the whole bag, I think they're the Wise brand). I'd rather not do that, but it is a little snack that doesn't break the calorie bank :)

Shmead 06-15-2010 07:45 AM

Carrots. 350 grams of carrots--which is a sandwich bag BULGING full--have about 150 calories.

caryesings 06-15-2010 08:03 AM

There are always almonds and apricots in my purse.

nelie 06-15-2010 08:15 AM

I keep a Clif or Luna bar in my purse. I also have these pressed fruit & veg fiberful strips from Trader Joe's in my purse.

Rochester 06-15-2010 08:17 AM

I always carry a snack in my bag. It gives me better options in emergency situations.

Pretzels and individual peanut butter packets (I buy those online.)
Soyjoy bars
Homemade trail mix (because the premixed variety has way too much dried fruit) - soynuts, almonds, walnuts, pumpkin and sunflower seeds (all raw and unsalted) and just a bit of either dried plums or apricots.
Slim Jim Beef and Cheese Sticks (I also buy these online.) Not exactly healthy, but it's an easy-to-transport snack

rockinrobin 06-15-2010 08:21 AM

Raw string beans.
An apple.
A bag of 70 calorie popcorn (not microwave, ready to eat).

Jane 06-15-2010 08:30 AM

I carry a Lara bar. Two ingredients: dates and cashews.

countryhomeschoolin 06-15-2010 09:27 AM

I carry 100 cal. pack dark cocoa almonds....yum.

Rebound 06-15-2010 09:44 AM

I always have a Fiber One bar close to hand.

sweetnlow28 06-15-2010 10:26 AM

I never used to carry a snack until last month when I went out longer than I planned to end ended up having to grocery shop while I was hungry, not a good idea ;) I now carry a 100 calorie snack nutribar which has fiber and protein. I also carry crystal light in case we ever stop for a drink so I can just grab a bottle of water. I prefer the Live Active crystal light flavours (10 cals and prebiotic fiber in each)

ricepapr 06-17-2010 09:19 PM

I carry lots of snacks, but it all depends on what I'm doing. I commute by bike so I always carry a fruit strip for an energy boost b/c energy bars tend to be too calorie-dense for me. The Archer Farms fruit strips are the best so far because they have no added sugars and they hold up really well in the heat (there's always one tucked in my seat bag).

I also like to carry a Fiber One or Kashi bar in my backpack in case I get really hungry while out in general. They don't hold up as well for extended bag time though.

If I know I'll be hungry while I'm out and don't have time for a meal, I have little cases that I picked up at Sanrio and The Container Store and use for hummus and carrots. Sometimes I'll also throw some string cheese or Annie's bunny grahams in as well.

Most of these snacks can be burned off in an extra 5-10 minutes of cycling and they keep me from getting grumpy and going off plan so I like them a lot.

theresac 06-18-2010 09:50 AM

Hey, ricepapr, I carry hummus around too! Especially since it's so easy to make. I also carry vegetable sticks (carrots, cucumbers, bell peppers cut into strips, etc). They're especially good to snack on when I'm not hungry, but want to eat.

I also carry rye bread and feta sandwiches that I dress up w/ whatever veggies I have in the house (tomatoes, scallions, peppers, whatever). They're filling enough to tide me over to the next meal (or as a meal subsitute, if I need it), but still healthy.

PeanutsMom704 06-18-2010 01:35 PM

Nuts are my emergency snack because they keep better than most of the other things people list. I don't routinely snack so I don't want to bring extra fresh foods that I might not really want and they'd either go bad or I'd eat them in order to not waste them even if I wasn't really hungry.

I haven't been keeping them in my purse, I keep a small container at my desk at work. But someone suggested using an Altoids tin, so I'm going to fill up one of those so I can always have them in my bag too.

For me, the key was finding a specific nut (almonds in my case) that I like but don't really love, so I'll eat them if I'm hungry but won't munch away just because I like them, the way I would with many other types of nuts.

Breannaj1215 06-18-2010 01:57 PM

Yea thats how i am. If it was cashews or honey roasted peanuts i would eat the whole bag. Almonds are ok, not my favorite. I can eat them and stop after the serving

saef 06-18-2010 02:16 PM

Almonds or dry-roasted peanuts and an apple.

Speaking of which, I wish they'd make a trail mix that swapped out the bits of dried fruit for bits of dried vegetables, and that the vegetables weren't greasy or sodium-loaded. I have no idea how this would be achieved, but I'd buy it, if it didn't taste awful.

PeanutsMom704 06-18-2010 02:28 PM

saef -

not exactly what you are talking about but have you tried Veggie Straws?

http://www.sensibleportions.com/#/co...s_veggiestraws

really yummy and not too bad in terms of calories and nutrition

Shannon in ATL 06-18-2010 03:03 PM

I have almonds in a snack baggie, an individual pack of peanut butter and a Kashi bar in my purse right now.

Serbrider 06-18-2010 03:41 PM

This thread is awesome! I am going to be traveling a TON in the next couple of months (like... country to country, all over Texas, etc)... and I'd rather have something healthy to grab instead of getting glared at by my mom for running into the convience store because I'm wanting some nuts.

I was thinking that maybe instead of paying more for "prepackaged" things... I could buy a nut mix or whatever I choose to get (not a fan of nuts, but I'm gonna look around) in those economy size packages or whatever and then seperating them out into little "100 calorie" packets for myself. And since my family re-uses most ziploc bags... it'd work well. :)

RunnerChemist 06-18-2010 03:47 PM

I like to have nuts or a fiber bar with me as well. Keeps well. Hummus is also a winner for me, although I don't keep it in my bag.

saef - you could probably make your own. Have you seen the freeze dried vegetables like "just peas" "just corn" "just carrots" etc? I have used them to make my own camping foods and I'm a fan. Here's a link. They have them in some grocery stores. I always make my own trail mix for backpacking.

http://www.justtomatoes.com/OJC-P.html

ricepapr 06-18-2010 09:28 PM

Theresac: your sandwiches sound so good. I'm adding them to my recipes. Maybe I'll try them with pumpernickel.

Serbrider: rad idea! My family also reuses ziploc bags which I don't get and grosses me out. I always try to throw them away in secret when I visit. They are being green and stuff so blah blah--nah, it still grosses me out.

Serbrider 06-18-2010 09:41 PM

ricepapr... I went and spent $50 on trail mix ingredients. yeah... I might just go get the prepackaged stuff next time. ;)

We do wash the ziploc bags... :p I dunno... I don't find it all that gross personally... but to each their own. :D

ThinkandGrowThin 06-20-2010 03:14 AM

The options really are endless

Carrot sticks, cheese slices, apple, banana, fruit infused raisins, nuts & seeds, cereal/granola bars

Often when we think we're hungry, we're actually thirsty - so I'd suggest carrying a bottle of water with you everywhere and having a drink when you feel 'hungry', then wait 20 minutes and see if you're still hungry. If you're in tune with recognising your hunger early enough, waiting 20 minutes shouldn't be an issue.

Thanks, all, for the dried vegetable suggestions. When I think it over, what I want sounds almost like nuts & dried vegetable soup mix combo, only without added sodium. Those chips are tempting, but alas, they're far too chiplike for me, and I have trouble with things that are chiplike -- I get into that hand-to-mouth rhythm where I'm popping them in, one after the other. and portion control goes flying out the window.

The only trail mix that I trust is Trader Joe's. Or I mix my own, according to my own Draconian standards. (The cost is worth it for me to control it absolutely.) In my world, M&Ms do not belong in trail mix. Yogurt-covered stuff does not belong in trail mix. Butterscotch or chocolate morsels do not belong in trail mix. Nor do salty sesame sticks snacks (I should probably spell these as "snax") or those amazing salty Asian rice crackers or Chex party mix. All these are banned substances. In fact, I have debated banning cranberries & raisins entirely, because even their presence in a high proportion can make me overeat the stuff.

I debated for quite the long time about banning exactly this - craisins and raisins and finally came to the conclusion that they would have to go. I was using them in controlled portions in salads, but found myself *going to them* at other times. I'd say the ban started about 6 weeks ago, maybe 8, and wouldn't you know it, I had completely forgotten about them until I just read this thread. Amazing. Just amazing!!! Totally out of my head. I don't miss them at all, like I said, I'd completely forgotten about them. No longer an issue. Banning them was the right decision for me.

Dried fruit, granola bars, chex mix, trail mix, not part of my life.

Glory87 06-21-2010 09:55 AM

I was just digging through my purse looking for Splenda, there is a Cliff Nectar bar - dark chocolate walnut - 140 calories. My JIC snack!

Vladadog 06-21-2010 10:07 AM

Im not sure I could give up craisens. I love them in my salad. But I'm never tempted by them for a snack so I guess they aren't dangerous (yet).

I picked up some Emerald dark cocoa almonds 100 calorie packs. I tried a pack - good but not so good I wanted a second pack (or to eat the whole box!). I think they'll be a good addition to my emergency snack supply. And I bet I could make cheaper and healthier ones at home, too.

Karen925 06-21-2010 06:29 PM

Do these snacks make it through airport security?

Vladadog 06-21-2010 06:34 PM

small sealed packages are fine. Whole fruit is fine. Cut up fruit or homemade snacks like a DIY granola bar or cocoa almonds in an old altoid tin might not make it through.

saef 06-21-2010 06:49 PM

I've gotten my own mixed nuts through in ziploc bags. I just put the food in a ziploc bag, if at all possible, so they can see it clearly, the way they do my toiletries.

Lara bars are a great, delicious and filling thing to throw in your bag :)
