Need Apple Recipes - apples are almost ready here!

  • The apples on my father's apple tree will be ready in a few weeks - they are golden delicious. It occurred to me that all the recipes I have for apple desserts are all pretty high in calories.

Now, I think I can work up a low cal recipe for apple crisp - especially since Splenda has brown sugar now. But, if you have one already for crisp, that would save me the time!

What I was wondering, is do you all have favorite lower calorie apple recipes? I thought about looking some up, but it seems like it always saves time to ask people who have already made some and have the personal experience. I'm also wondering how possible it is to make a good, flaky pie crust without breaking the calorie bank.

It's just not fall to me without the smell of baking apples. I am in love with fall - it's my favorite season!

Phyllo dough is nice - make a dish of seasoned sliced apples, top with a few layers of phyllo. It's not crust, but it's both crispy and flaky, and isn't a calorie nightmare.

I just canned up a batch of pear-apple butter for Christmas gifts...it's not exactly low-cal, but a bit goes a long way, and it's better than putting -actual- butter on your toast...and it ranks very high on the "house smells like fall" factor, especially if you set it in the crockpot and let it go all day.
  • Mandalinn: Phyllo dough - I have heard of this used, but have never tried it! Thanks for that - I will pick some up. What else do you use phyllo dough for? Can I wrap a turkey dog in it, for example, and bake it for my kids? I am not familiar with the consistency/texture of it - like if it would crumble easily. Your pear-apple butter sounds fantastic - I can bet whoever gets those will be very happy
  • Mandalinn - your apple/pear combo sounds so good - I am looking on Splenda.com right now and saw this recipe for apple pear crisp - sounds really good!

  • I love to just core out several apples, so their is a 1/2 " or so hole down the center of the apple,I leave the skin on the apples, more fiber! Then I place them in a shallow dish sprayed with pam, then I fill apple centers with raisins & cinnamon. Nuke in microwave until done, semi soft, it smells the whole house up wonderfully. I find the apples are sweet enough, so it doesn't need brown sugar, but it could be optional for you.... My hubby even loves these..
So good and good for you dessert!
  • evilwoman: That sounds great - and it is something my kids would love, too - they can help fill the apples. Thank you!
