Does anyone "just" walk for exercise?
And do you think it's "enough"?
Currently i'm walking daily (1hr'ish or more) or doing a 30 minute fast walk/jog Leslie Sansone DVD (enough to work up a good sweat, I put my all into it) I'd like to incorporate toning/weights 3x/week for about 20min. each session. Do you feel like this is "enough" for weight loss & maintenance after I reach my goal? I'm eating at 1300 cals, have only went over once, and am really looking to do this for "life" kwim? And don't want to get myself into something I can't keep up with... i'm a sahm have 4 kids and am always doing this or that. I read a post where someone said they didn't consider 30 minutes of walking exercise, so does that mean that a 30 minute walk is not enough? I always read that "anything" counts... I am fairly tall and walk quite fast, so thought even if 30 min. fast walking was all I could get in for the day was it, it would be enough. But the more I read, the more confused I get.. :o I would really appreciate any comments/suggestions from others!! This is the first time i'm losing weight the "right" way and would like to stay on the right track!! Thanks so much!! I love this message board and am finding a wealth of information here!!! :D Note: I've been doing this for 6 weeks, 15lbs down |
Walking & Leslie Sansone dvd's have been my primary exercise for years. Not sure if you are aware, there are Walk Away The Pounds dvd's that incorporate weights & resistance bands. The Walk Away Your Hips & Thighs with the fit cuff is an awesome workout!

It sounds like you are successful so I wouldn't worry about all the stuff you read. Just do whatever feels right for your life style. Everyone is different.

Depends on your fitness level. Some people are lucky if they can get to the end of the block and back without huffing and puffing. If that's all they can do, they have to work up to walking 30 minutes. I lost 50 pounds in 1997 by walking 30 minutes every day. Now, I wish I had added strength training back then, and now maybe I wouldn't have the jiggly arm thing, but I didn't know.

Well I lost 30 pounds in 4 months with absolutely NO exercise. I was just a lazy bum watching my calories lol Now I exercise and have started to LOVE having that time at the gym to myself while working my butt off. I do the treadmill for at least 30 minutes and bicycle for 30 minutes. I'm going to try to tackle the strength training next.
Do what is right for you. |
They say that you have to grow to love exercise and if you enjoy walking then you're probably going to stick with it. You know your body better than anyone and if you're seeing results and you feel good then you're definitely on the right track.
I would suggest getting a pedometer. Splurge and get the good kind. They say you should walk between 10,000 to 15,000 steps a day. That's about 5-7 miles for my stride but I'm a shortie and that could possibly mean up to 10 miles for someone tall. You'll find this more useful than just saying "I walked for 30minutes today." Instead you'll say "I walked 3 miles in 30minutes today" and THAT cannot be disputed as exercise! |
I think walking is a great exercise- I know part of the reason I was so much thinner in high school was I walked EVERYWHERE!
|
I'll be honest that walking usually isn't an intensive enough exercise for me, but that's just my body type. I love walking, however, and it's a wonderful exercise for a lot of people!
Do what works for you! |
I walk 4 times a week on the treadmill for 30 mins. Sometimes I use weights and do lifts while I walk. On alternate days I do strength/ab work. I always feel better after I've walked. Walking is exercise, no matter what. You're in motion and burning calories. Pish Posh on whoever said that walking 30 mins a day isn't exercise!!!!!
|
Thanks *SO* much ladies!! :D Feeling better about what i'm doing now! I'll keep it up and add in strength training too!
Could I please have some good pedometer suggestions?? |
I have an Omron HJ-112, and I love it. Bought mine on Amazon. There are tons of reviews of it there.
|
Yep, love the Omron!

Walking is fine for many of us. It beats sitting on the couch watching TV. I am not and will never be one that lifts weights or does exercise DVDs. Give me am MP3 player and I will walk and dance around all day :)
