Default How many grams of fat do you eat a day?

Im counting calories using the CalorieKing program. It says im allowed 1930 cals a day, although I don't eat that much I try for around 1500.

It say'd im allowed 58.4g of fat, does that sound a lot to you? It just sounds a lot of fat to me for a low fat diet. Checked out my averages and I'm having around 30g fat a day, is that enough?

I don't want to get ill or something from not eating enough, but then I think that nearly 60g sounds too much for someone on a diet.

Any help would be great, thanks

looking at an Alli booklet, Its reccomends 51grams LIMIT of fat a day with a diet of 1500kcals with 16g LIMIT per meal.

It depends what your doing and aiming for,
if your aiming to do a lowfat diet, eating food low in fat (not trying to reach the limit) isn't a bad idea.
But there are plent of healthy people who eat a high fat diet, but low in the 'bad' fats (saturated, trans etc)

If you just working on restricting kcals, eating less fat helps as if has double the kcals of carbs or protein per gram.

Fat, although (usually) depremental to weightloss is part of a healthy diet and isn't all bad ie:
in oily fish, in nuts and seeds, olive/flaxseed oils

you may find some meals/days you eat less than 20grams of fat a day, but on others (say they include fish or lowfat cheese etc) will be alot higher just aim that you don't go over the limit

Im rambling, but good luck

The Daily Plate tells me that I should have about 60 grams of fat a day. I don't take all of the DP's recommendation but have found that 50 to 60 grams a day works for me. I can stay within my calorie limits with this much fat. If I have much more, I tend to go over on calories. Years ago I was on the Zone diet and the doctor that wrote the book said that we need some healthy fat and I know that WW says we need some fat. Also I have found that if I don't get enough fat, I get constipated.

I am probably around 35-40 but don't keep count. There are some days I feel a craving for the heaviness and I will eat peanut butter or avacado or something without worrying too much about portion--just trying to listen to what my body needs. I really need that book Intuitive Eating!

You know I don't really keep track. I just try to keep the amount of fat I eat sane and if fat is higher than percent than protein on the daily plate I go scrounge some high protein low/no fat snack like tuna on saltines.

I generally eat about 15 to 20 grams of fat, which is low, but I make sure about about 85% of that fat is healthy fat from fish and oils. I don't like red meat and only eat pork on occasion so it's pretty easy for me to stay in that range.

I would say at least 50 grams but I'm not eating low fat.

sparkpeople tells me 32-56 and gets cross with me if I go below 32. My average for the past week has been 52, 1400 calories and I lost 2.5lbs.

I've been dieting all my life (mostly)
I started this in 2002
I restarted on 01/27/2009
but only started following sparkpeople's principles on 03/31.
I've lost 8.5lbs in 27 days on these levels.

Cammie--same for me...it is very easy for me to be in the ultra-low range and I actually was for months until I started losing hair! I upped my protein and healthy fats in attempt to stop it. Like you, I don't eat any red meat--mostly fish and rarely I will eat chicken.

I had problems with hair loss because I wasn't keeping track of my fat grams... a lot of days I was only eating 15 grams without realizing it. Now I try to be much more careful to make sure that I get at least 25-30 grams a day. For me, it's all good as long as most of it is coming from healthy fat sources like olive oil, nuts, or avocados as opposed to animal fats.

Thanks for all your help everyone,

I'll try and keep an eye on it and make sure i'm in the middle of my range, about 30-35 I think. Last night i'd only had 15 grams after dinner, so I had a handfull of nuts to bump it up.

I don't want my hair falling out!

I kept track of mine today. It was 93 grams. I had 1400 calories on the dot. So, my diet would be the exact opposite of a low fat diet.

I've eaten a fairly low fat diet for over a year. I don't have hair falling out issues. I got my hair cut yesterday and was told I had "lots of hair". Its not that I really purposefully don't eat a lot of fat, it just doesn't really happen.

Rule of thumb is around 30% of calories or less from fat. I end up between 50-60 grams a day.
