  • It looks like the free online food journal that I've been using may have been discontinued, so I think I'm going to be looking for a new one. For those of you that use online food journals, what do you use and how do you like it?

I'm familiar with Fitday, but I'm not completely happy with it. I have a lot of custom foods (literally hundreds) and it's sort of hard to wade through them all. It also doesn't let me note key ingredients. And the free version doesn't track sugar. Has anyone tried the premium version and is it worth the $$? Is anyone using anything they like better than Fitday?
  • I've used DietPower for years. There's no free version, though there is a 14 day, no-obligation free trial.

It's colourful and detailed, has thousands of branded products listed and is very easy too to add custom foods and recipes. There's a good forum too - I never found a fitday forum, maybe it comes with the paid version?

One of the best things about dp for me is its nutrition tracker, it makes it Very clear if you're low on every vitamin and mineral listed on packaging, plus water (and alcohol) and makes suggestions as to what you could do to improve your intake that day.
  • i noticed a lot of people seem to like the daily plate.
i use fitday just cause that was the first one i started on. it's not flawless, but i'm too far in to switch over now.
  • If you have an iPhone, LoseIt is a great little application. I can put in custom foods, calculate recipes, etc. Only bad thing is all the data is stored on your iPhone. On the positive, I have it with me all the time so it's really convenient to put in my data wherever I go without having to remember what I ate or having to write it down for later input.
  • I use The Daily Plate and it's been good for me so far. It tracks calories, fat, sodium (really important for me), cholesterol, protein, sugars, carbs, and fiber. TDP has a lot of foods in their database and if a food isn't listed, you can add it. You can also add recipes as well.
  • Just found a new one. SparkPeople allows you to do a food journal too.
  • I'm using the Daily plate as well and it has been ever so helpful...Seeing the calories listed and how many I have left for the day is a very good thing.
  • I'm very happy with the daily plate!
  • Fit day
I have the premium Fit Day software and it does NOT track sugar. I bought it when it was on sale for $20 but I don't use it anymore. It is better than their free online version but still not great. I hate their search function. For example, when you type in something generic like "rice" you will get a whole list of things such as Rice Chex, Rice Soup, Rice Wine, etc, before you get the entry for plain simple rice with nothing else. That annoys me. The other thing I really dislike is the font; I have bad eyesight and the type seems much smaller than in other programs.

I'm currently using the Daily Plate free online version.
  • I have a question about the daily plate. Why is it that some meals are listed with different amount of calories when grams are the same?I was looking up some restaurants and was very confused as to which number to use. Also what is the generic icon vs the restaurant name?Just a few questions if anyone can help.Thanks.
  • If you have high speed internet, the sparkpeople is the way to go. High in graphics.
The nutrition guide is easy to use and provides tons of info and offers plenty of help along the way.
One of the biggest and best weight loss sites, over 1 million people can't be wrong.
  • Spark People
    Ditto to what MeToo said.

SparkPeople is a great website. Has sections to add your own foods not on list. Has a section to compute calories etc to your own recipes.

I love the Spark Teams, so many teams to join for encouragement and info. They even have a team for bellydancers, which I found just by chance. Belly dancing is great exercise and fun. Even for older overweight ladies.

    Lots of exercise info.

Just a great site and its FREE.....

    Good Luck.

  • I am a long time DietPower user but it is PC based and not a web app. That is a feature that was important to me since I travel and always have a laptop with me but not necessarily access to the web.

I am also a member of Sparkpeople and CalorieKing - CK is not free.

Probably because various users list the nutrition info for all the foods in the database and sometimes, a user may enter info that is slightly off. Another thing is that sometimes, depending on where food is from, the nutrition info can be different for the same amount of food. An example is a Kit Kat bar. I use to wonder why the heck there were so many entries for Kit Kat bars even when it was the same amount. It turns out the nutritional info for Kit Kat bars in other countries is slightly different than it is here in the US. I figured it out when I went to store that sells a lot of food from other countries. The Kit Kat bar I picked up is sold in a lot of Arab countries but I noticed that there are more calories in it even though it had four bars.
  • I have used The daily Plate, SparkPeople, Fitday and My Diet on Facebook. So far My Diet is my favorite.(and no, my face book friends cant see my info, unless I want them to
