Does anyone know what the calories would be for one serving? I have googled and looked around quite a bit but every website has a completely different number, some website say around 450, 500 etc. etc. but I once say a diet show that said it was 800! Anyone know for certain?
First off, if you don't make it yourself, you never know for certain what the calories in something are. Different restaurants have different recipes, different ingredients, etc. Depending how much cream, butter, and other high-cal ingredients are used, you're going to have drastically different calorie counts.
Also, what is a "serving"? What you are served at a restaurant? 1 cup?
If you were making it at home, you could measure your ingredients and calculate it.
It would completely depend on the recipe. Some might use twice or triple the amount of butter; some might use spreads; some might be pan-fried in the butter, others baked and the sauce made separately, etc...

when i do it i usually look up on the daily plate the sauce, chicken and rice seperately and just add it together. If its particularly creamy i am more liberal with how many calories i think it is.
Butter chicken is an indian dish with a sort of creamy tomato sauce, curry, different spices and obviously a ton of butter tee hee. It's sinfully good.
I guess I consider a serving to be a cup, that's what I usually use...I figured each recipe would be so different it would be hard to pin down an exact number. I think I am going to start experimenting with my own recipe so that I can keep track of the numbers!
Butter Chicken usually doesn't have butter in it, but there's usually a tonne of cream and fat in it.
I know that one of the recipes I have for the recipe, a serving has something like 1500 calories and 81 grams of fat. I've never made that recipe and I don't think I ever will!
I'm a Weight Watcher but when I saw the title of this thread I just had to have a look-see; I LOVE butter chicken! I found this recipe by Googling "butter chicken lite". This doesn't look too bad, calorie wise, but I think the versions you get in restaurants etc. are not a dieter's friend. A co-worker of mine makes an authentic Indian butter chicken and when I asked if it was at all diet friendly (you can always hope!) she said I didn't want to know....
Lean & Lite Butter Chicken
Serves:4
Ingredients
2 tsp ground coriander
1/2 tsp ground cumin
1/4 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp chilli powder
1 tsp paprika
1/2 tsp salt
500g Tegel Lean & Lite Skinless Breast Fillets, sliced into thick strips
1 tsp oil
1 onion, chopped
1 clove garlic, crushed
1 tbsp grated fresh ginger
1/4 cup tomato paste
1 cup water
1 tsp garam masala
1/2 cup low fat plain yoghurt
Method
Combine the ground coriander, cumin, cinnamon, chilli, paprika and salt in a bowl. Add the chicken strips and mix well.
Heat the oil in a non stick frying pan. Add the chicken breast and cook over medium heat for 3 to 4 minutes or until the chicken is brown. Remove from the pan and set aside. Add the onion, garlic and ginger and cook over medium heat for 2 minutes.
Return the chicken to the pan with the tomato paste and water. Simmer for 5 to 7 minutes or until the chicken is cooked through. Stir in the garam masala. Remove from the heat, allow to cool slightly, then stir in the yoghurt.
Serve with rice, poppodums and a cucumber, chilli and coriander salad.
Thanks Fressca!! I will definately have to try that. I like that the majority of ingredients are sort of every day type items. I have searched a lot of recipes with super out there ingredients.
and here I am imagining it to be a chicken breast with butter smothered on top of it and thinking "do people really eat that?" .... lol!
It sounds really good now that I know what it really is though.
LOL! I was imagining that too.
Sadly, I don't have a kitchen right now because I live in a dorm.
But, once I have the opportunity, I would love to create my own healthy version of this!
