  • I got about 2 bushels of apples from our main apple farm here, This weekend I made a ton of applesauce. Next for the slow cooker is apple butter!
  • Same as apple butter. On toast, a bagel, an english muffin, in oatmeal. Whatever. Experiment - you never know what you might find that works.

  • Quote: Okay so what would you use Pumpkin Butter with? That sounds Delicious but I have no clue what I would eat it with?
I posted above that I love to add a dollop to baked squash (acorn, butternut, etc). It's also great on toast, english muffins, spice bread, etc.
  • Quote: The recipe I use for pumpkin butter is pretty simple. I make it in the crockpot.

1 can pumpkin puree (or 15 oz fresh cooked pumpkin puree)
    1/2 cup apple juice
    1/2 cup brown sugar
    1 T cinnamon
    1 t ginger
    1/2 t ground cloves
    grating of fresh nutmeg.

Put everything into the crockpot, stir it up well, and let it cook on low for 6-7 hours. I usually let it cook overnight. I make 3x and 4x batches of this and give it away as holiday gifts to friends. You can add other things for flavor as well - nuts, maple syrup, etc. I just like it as is.

That sounds delicious. About how many calories is it?

I have never had apple butter. Where can you find it? Whole Foods?
  • It comes out to something like 40 calories per T.

You should be able to find apple butter in any grocery store - it's with the jelly. Of course, if you're a label reader, you probably won't be super happy with typical apple butters with their high fructose corn syrup. A brand I like is Eden - it is available at Whole Foods (a little pricey). If you have access to a Trader Joe's, I would definitely recommend Trader Joe's. They tend to have cheaper, healthier products (it might still have SUGAR but it will be plain old sugar).

Eden also makes a FABULOUS FABULOUS cherry butter - nothing but cherries. It is tart and fantastic and tastes amazing on waffles.

Link to Eden fruit butters - you can order online! I do prefer Eden's cherry butter to Eden's apple butter - I like my apple butter spicy and zesty and theirs is nice, but kind of plain.
  • Thanks, Photo. I don't mind calories if they are healthy and nutritious. I'm trying to get away from all the artificial sweetners, HFCS, trans fat and processed garbage. Sure is hard, though, but I'm finding more and more things I can make myself and have control over what goes in my body.

Great tips, Glory, thanks! Sadly we don't have Trader Joe's yet in Houston (weird I think!) but I will check out the Whole Foods for the Eden brand or another suitable brand. That cherry butter sounds delicious!
  • Sorry - I'm a spaz and didn't notice your location - Trader Joe's is only slowly hitting the south (they are in NC!). Everytime they ask for my zip code at my local Trader Joe's (to determine where their customers live, to figure out where to build store) I always give my mom's zip code in San Antonio!!!
  • Whole Foods has a couple of good brands. I'll look in my pantry and see what I have. Also, Williams Sonoma brands of fruit butter are *awesome*. They're a little spendy, but I often stock up on them after the holidays when they go on sale.

  • Okey doke... So who has an absolutely fabulous apple butter recipe?

    That sounds really good.
  • IF you can find TapN Apple (I get it at shoppers Market) it's got No Sugar Added.

also if you are lucky enough to be near any Amish Markets, they make NSA apple butter and sell it.
  • Apple butter brings back memories of childhood, my Grandmother use to make it and there was alway some on hand to have on some toast or crackers, I think I will go out and buy some today

    As Ever

  • I was feeling very "fall"-y at the supermarket this week. I got a butternut squash, whole grain gingerbread pancake mix, and pumpkin butter. YUMMYYYY!

I used pumpkin butter on my gingerbread pancake! It was sooo great.
