Default multi vitamin? other supplements?

I know it's best to get our vitamins and minerals from the food we eat but even trying to eat healthy I'm sure I'm missing out on things. So I started taking a multivitamin. Just "One a Day" brand. There are soooo many to choose from.

I'd love to hear thoughts on whether or not to take vitamins (or any other supplements) and if there are brands to stay away from or really look for.

What do you guys think????

thanks!

I think vitamin supplements can be important if you are counting calories. A restricted calorie diet may not include all of the nutrients you need.
Personally, I take a generic (Centrum equivalent) multi-vitamin and calcium supplements. This pretty much covers what I need. That being said, I do try to make sure I am not eating empty calories, so most of my needs are met by food.

I also take vitamins and omega 3's. My vitamin is Trader Joe's women's high potency, and it contains vitamins, minerals, and a few extra doodads. I also take a Trader Joe's Omega 3 fatty acid because I'm still battling with my hesitancy to eat fish. I'm happy with both, and have found that they tend to be cheaper at Trader Joe's than at other places.

I just want to be sure that my body is getting everything it needs.

I'm bad at getting omega-3s...outside of the rare can of tuna, I almost never get any. So I do take a fish oil supplement. I also take a Multi-V for "insurance", though I try to hit my RDAs without it.

I also take a probiotic, mainly because it helps my stomach stay normally functioning, which is useful for me since I have a fairly sensitive system.

I'm 21, I take Women's One a Day and I try to remember to take an extra calcium supplement but it really only happens about once a week when it should happen twice a day, I need to get on top of that... My theory is it's pretty hard to get TOO MUCH of a vitamin or mineral when you're using it as prescribed and you're on a low cal diet.

I used to feel awful all the time.... I totally think supplements got me back on my feet. I think I have thyroid or adrenal problems and from my research I can't imagine not taking them.

I'm a vitamin freak these days. Right now I take a multi (one a day, I think)
Iron (I'm vegetarian)
Glucosomine-it's a must for me. When I first started working out I was so stiff! My poor, old bones ached. Totally better now.
B12 I started taking this years ago to help fight depression. The depression is long gone, but I stil take b12. I think it's more superstition than anything these days, but whatever works.....
