Cutting out breads, rice, and sugar?

  • Hey there,

I have a question.... I have noticed over the last month that if I don't eat breads, rice, or sugar that I lose weight faster.

I also noticed that when I eat those things I have a headache. Does that mean I could have a food allergy? I'm still getting plenty of carbs from my veggies, but is this a common thing?

    Any input is greatly appreciated.
  • I wouldn't think it's a food allergy but you can never be sure.

It sounds like those items negatively effect your blood sugar. When you don't eat them, your body burns fat more efficiently. I'd even bet that you also tend to not eat as many calories because you don't have that huge spike in your blood sugar. That's probably why the weight loss is greater.

I think the headaches you have comes from crashing after eating those simple carbs. Again, it goes back to blood sugar and insulin.
  • I don't know about the allergy part, but I lose faster and more consistently when I minimize flour and sugar, even when calories are equal. I've just decided that I'm more sensitive to those kind of carbs. No headache for me, but I tend to feel more aches and to have more stomach discomfort when I eat more carbs. Not much help, but at least you know you're not alone.

This may not be what you want to hear but...get yourself a copy of Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution and read it, I believe it would clearly explain your problem in detail.

This is my thought as well. I tend to get headaches (and get really cranky) when my blood sugar drops.

Is all the bread that you eat white (or even the wheat kind that is really white with coloring added)? Is the rice you eat white? If you really miss bread and rice, I'd try switching to whole grain breads (make sure to buy the kind with the most fiber) and brown rice. The added fiber helps slow down digestion and your blood sugar won't spike like it does with simple carbs.

I eat small meals regularly throughout the day and avoid processed simple carbs to keep my blood sugar level.
  • I don't miss bread, rice or sugar at all. I know it's strange. I've been a meet and potatoes girl all my life, and never thought I could go without rice, bread, sugar, or potatoes.

I ate a bagel the other day and thought I was going to be sick! The rice I mainly eat is white, but the most I would have was 1/2 cup per day. I haven't had bread except the bagel in about two weeks.

I can tell a difference when I don't eat any of that stuff. I feel better and the scale likes me better. I was curious if others have had a similar situation.

Quite a few of us 'low carb' and 'Atkins' people have.
  • It sounds like your body is trying to tell you something. If you feel better then go with it!
  • I find that to be true for me when I eat white things... I have no problem with wheat alternatives, though. I love whole wheat bread, pasta, sandwich wraps, etc. And brown rice. I even find now that I like these better than their white counterparts; the latter just seems so bland and tasteless to me now...

I can't live without my breads.
  • I dont get the headaches but i sure lose better without the white carbs...potatoes dont seem to slow my weight loss as much as bread does. I am not a big rice eater so not sure about it.I have noticed that pasta slows it down also. I really try to only eat whole wheat bread when i must have it.
    good luck
  • I do much better if I keep the grains to a minimum too - even whole grains. Wheat and corn products seem to be the hardest on me but even too many servings of oatmeal in one week (I make myself from steel cut oats so I'm pretty sure it's not an additive issue) will make me kind of sluggish. With too much wheat, my joints even get achy - I don't think it's so much an allergy, could be some sort of sensitivity, but just don't think I process them well.
  • Sounds as if you might have insulin resistance? If keeping to a low carb eating plan is working for you, if you are losing and feeling great, then it must be right for you. I would stick with it.

If you do get to the point where you want grain based foods, I would, as others have suggested, stick to whole grain products and skip anything white or too processed.
