I have to have protein in my snack; rice cakes and 100 calorie packs just leave me hungry and are empty calories in my diet.

My most common snacks are:

1/2 cup Fage 0% fat yogurt (60 calories)
1-2 Frigo low fat mozzarella sticks (60 calories each)
1/2 cup Friendship 1% fat cottage cheese (90 calories)

Sometimes I have a full cup of yogurt, sometimes I have a Wasa multigrain cracker with my cottage cheese, but loading up on the protein all day keeps me full. I'm at 1600 calories, but I have three meals and three snacks a day.

  • Meg's Fiber One Muffins. I sub pumpkin for the applesauce, skim milk for the buttermilk, baking powder for the baking soda (baking soda won't work with skim milk), splenda for the sugar, add 2 tsp of pumpkin pie spice, and always add some fruit. I divide the batter into 10 muffins instead of twelve, but with the skim milk, pumpkin, and splenda, they still come in at around 70 to 80 calories per muffin. I eat one everyday.
  • Trader Joe's multigrain cereal. Like oatmeal but only 130 calories per serving. Available at some mainstream grocery stores under the Country Choice brand.
  • La Tortilla wrap spread with a wedge of laughing cow cheese (50 calories for the wrap, 35 calories for the cheese). I also sometimes add lunch meat, spinach, sliced apple, or sundried tomatoes, depending on many calories I have available.
  • Omelet made from 1/4 cup egg beaters, 1 laughing cow cheese wedge, and some spinach, sliced mushrooms, and/or sun-dried tomatoes. Sometimes topped with salsa or chutney. This comes in at about 75 calories.
  • Kippered herring or sardines
  • 1/2 cup Fiber One cereal (only 60 calories and a lot more nutritious than a rice cake)
  • Yogurt Vegetable Salad: 1/4 cup nonfat plain yogurt, 2.5 oz sliced cucumber, 1/4 cup chickpeas, 1.5 oz halved cherry tomatoes, minced fresh mint or basil, 1 tsp dijon mustard, salt and pepper to taste. This is one serving and comes in at 85 calories. Very filling and more food than you'd expect.

I'm on 1200 calories a day too and I have to say that I've found rice cakes and 100-calorie packs to not be good choices for me in terms of snacks. They just don't have much in the way of nutrition, they are mostly empty carbs. On 1200 calories a day, I need everything I eat to be as nutritious as possible. I do much better with snacks that have some protein, good fats, and/or fiber.

The mini popcorn bags are great too, they're usually 100 cals too.

If you like rice cakes, spread them with some Laughing Cow light cheese, top with some sliced tomato and cucumber, sprinkle spices or fresh herbs on it, it's very good. You can use other veggies too, like peppers, broccoli, onions, etc.

Apple with peanut butter is good too, but that would easily be over 100 calories.
