Default Calories Burnt Question

I have www.dailyplate.com as a subscription. I really do love it! My question is: I was checking out the different excercises. I saw cleaning (folding laundry, dishes, etc.) were on there. However, do you think I should really count that since I do that all the time anyway. Or should I just count something that's more strenuous, like raking tons of leaves.

Thanks a million!

I don't think there is a right or wrong answer to this question - it is just a matter of personal preference. It really is up to you.
I do not count "housework" unless I go above and beyond my usual routine. Washing all the outside windows, washing walls, etc. But I use Fitday, which does not subtract calories for activities - it only logs them so that I can keep track of them.

Unless you want to set yourself as completely sedentary and then add in every single activity, I wouldn't recommend it. (It would take too long, for one thing!). You really only want to count extra activity that you wouldn't normally do.

Even then, I'd have a think about whether to log it. The Daily Plate allots you extra food calories for every activity you enter. Since you want to create the biggest calorie deficit you can manage for weight loss, I personally don't think that you want to 'eat' calories that you've burned through extra activity and exercise. People disagree on this question, but I can't imagine that anyone would suggest eating back the calories from folding laundry.

Hey Sapphire..I just started with mydailyplate and was wondering the same thing! I work 8hrs and it's in the "standing - filing, light work" category but if I enter that in @450min it says I am allowed to consume like 3000 more cals lol! I'm just logging in my effort to exercise! Good luck!

Lightbulb I Do Count Activity

I used to be moderately active for almost two decades then some injuries and arthritis set in and I went from that to a total couch potato.

I have recently started back both exercising and dieting to lose weight---about 135 lbs.

I am currently following the WW Flex Point Plan which does allow counting exercise points "earned", if I understand it correctly. It goes without saying that if you are active you are burning calories---otherwise why would you be sweating?

I keep track of my "activity" points for two reasons: 1) so I know exactly what I am doing, how I am progressing, etc. 2) so I can fuel that activity.

I realize not every one enjoys being active but I do. In just two months time, I am now up to walking 2 mph on my treadmill 30 min a daily 5x a week; doing upper body free weights ( 5 lbs) 3x a week and doing abs 5x a week and recently added Pilates lower body and dancing dvds on the weekends (I work full time).

Because of exercise, I have the energy to work full time, do all of our cooking (from scratch--l'm leaning towards the Sonoma diet that I've been reading about here), light housework (I live in a 2 bedroom apt so I'm not going to fool myself it is any thing more than that), increase my "love life" and do errands on Saturdays. Oh, I am 54 years old too.

I did go on the website you mentioned. I had never heard of it! Thanks!
According to that I should eat about 2000 calories to lose two pounds a week. That seem to fit in with the WW Flex Plan I am currently following.

I have lost 16 lbs since September 1st and I am sure I have lost inches. When I lose 25 lbs I'll measure myself again and see.

Remember being active will help you burn those calories, it will increase your metabolism and it just plain makes you feel better---physically and mentally.

I agree with baffled111 on this one, if you were doing that stuff already and have gained or maintained your weight I would just leave it along.
