Default Popcorn Question

On the microwave popcorn, it lists to values, one for unpopped corn (??) and one for popped. What I do not understand is, how the unpopped lists more calories and fat than the popped. How does that decrease with popping? And who eats unpopped popcorn anyhow?

I think the reason the unpopped corn has more calories & fat is because some of the oil that it is packed in sticks to the bag when you are cooking it so when you eat the popped popcorn you are only ingesting the calories of the oil that remains on the popcorn.

Yes, some of the oil stays on the bag...and you also end up with a certain amount of uncooked kernels that are not eaten. So, there are unpopped kernels and some oil/seasoning that will remain in the bag, after you are finished.

I always wondered about that, too, so I just buy the 100-cal snack pack ones...no thinking involved there.

they list the serving as 2 different things. 3 tablespoons unpoped, or 1 cup popped. then it says taht there are 3 (or so) servings per bag. They are telling you how many servings of unpoped corn there is in the bag of popcorn. They give you a totally different measurement for the popped stuff because they dont know how much will pop. There are about 12 cups of popcorn in a bag (give or take a bit, depending on how much pops. i didn't realize this for a while, thinking that htere were only 3 servings per bag, at 40 calories each...i'd eat a whole bag and not know i was eating about 300-400 calories. It actually slowed down my weightloss - a whole lot-. If you are going to eat microwave popcorn measure it out of the bag a cup at a time..that way you actually know how much you are eating.
