Allison ... I'm all in favour of simple. That starting point!!! ... figuring it out drives most folks to the fast food counter.

I'd go for weight times 10. It's at least a place to start. Then they can hang around with us and we can tweak ;)

Then take a couple hundred away to lose. To me that sounded rather simplistic.

That seems low to me for maintenace calories. I looked on one of those sites with the daily calorie needs calculators and it said that if I was at my goal weight I would need just under 2000 calories to maintain. And that's with a light activity lifestyle (ie. just above sedentary.) We'll wait and see how accurate that is...

I did read something similar that said to multiply your goal weight by 10 and that you shouldn't go under that amount of calories (per day) or you would slow down your metabolism. I had never heard that before though, so I don't know if it's true. It's so hard to tell what's fact and what isn't these days.

lovemyboy 04-03-2007 08:07 PM

I had approximately 1700 calories today. I shoot for under 1800, so that is good for me. I also had a nice brisk walk. The best news of all... I weighed today (it has been a week since the last time I weighed) and I'm down 2 pounds! :carrot:

CoolMom75 04-03-2007 09:01 PM

That's awesome Lovemyboy!

Cals today: 1600

I finally used the goal feature on Fitday, so I can look back and see my cals per day average. I thought the bar graph was a little hard to use for specifics.

Hi everyone,

crazy day. I am ready for bed already.

Hubby went to work today... with the 2 broken finger. And was sent home. Soooo, he gets a vacation out of all his pain. (its much better today. Thanks for the kind wishes. )
Any way... I also get to spend the next couple of weeks with him at home.
:cp: :D

talk more in the a.m.

Hi all!

I'm on spring break, and a couple of days have not been good. Sunday and Monday you could say I was not OP. Did I already post about this? I can't remember, which is sad, but then the days can tend to run together on break. Anyway, Sunday was a big buffet to start, which was deadly. My calculations at end of day were around 2300, but who knows... it was likely more than that. No exercise Sunday or Monday and then Monday was another dinner out. I think my calories Monday were between 1800-2000.

So, today I'm back on track. Thank goodness.
Calories -- 1280
Fiber -- 53
Exercise -- 1 hour tennis with DH
Goal for rest of week:
Calories around 1200-1300
Drink lots of water
Eat at least 40 grams fiber per day
Exercise Wed, Thu, Fri -- at least one of these needs to be intense

I really need to watch it for the rest of break. I am not expecting a loss, but I do not want to GAIN. I do sooo much better when I have my regular routine. Also, it's a good thing I don't eat out much -- it's just so hard to resist all the good stuff and also to figure out how much to put in fitday. It's just better to stay OP and eat what I know works for me!

Theresa - terribly sorry to hear about your husband's fingers... OUCH!

Good job to all those who are having losses this week!!!

Oh, on another note, I have a car that is on its last legs and DH and I are going car shopping tomorrow. I always buy used (the frugal side of me), but I am somewhat enamored with these new little boxy type cars -- Toyota Matrix especially, but I also like the Honda Fit and Nissan Versa. We are going to test drive some tomorrow and maybe see if we can find a used one in next couple months. Do any of you have one of these cars or know anyone who knows? Thoughts, ideas, advice?? Thanks!!

Have a great Wednesday, gang. Eat healthy and be happy!

srmb60 04-04-2007 12:16 AM

Hi everybody. I just got home from work and I'm wide awake.

Let me see ... if I go to bed as soon as I finish my wine (without snacking) I'll be at 1900 and some calories. Tsk ... but that's a deficit.

littlered 04-04-2007 08:19 AM

Hi,

I just wanted to say... Watch you Fiber one boxes, inside. I eat the Fiber One Clusters. This morning I open a new box and found a coupon inside,
for a free Box of Fiber One bars. (Printed inside of the box).

Lara,
when you look at your Google tool bar. If You right click on it.On a blank spot, you will see an option to LOCK the tool bars. If you click that,
It will be much harder for it to Hide on you.

Justme,
That's great, I hope you did break your plateau. I hope its a longggg time before I hit one.

How long does it take you to break it?

GrammyL 04-04-2007 08:36 AM

Theresa ~ I sure hope you DH isn't as big a baby as mine or you may go insane with him at home. :dizzy:

Claire ~ I have to have structure or I have a hard time sticking to any type of plan. I want a small car like that but I have a TrailBlazer because DH wants me to have 4 wheel drive in the winter. I actual like those little tiny cars and really want one but they look like death traps.

Zenor ~ WTG on the walking. :woops: I always feel much better went I go for walks, even a short 10 minute walk. I think it keeps the blood moving and helps clear the head.

Lovemyboy ~ :bravo: on the loss.

Justme ~ I made it thru the rest of the day safely with those pants but was really careful going down the stairs. :joker:

Calories for Tuesday: 1354
I am not sure how they ended up this low but I will take it.

Well TOM is debating on starting early or it thinks it wants to. For the past few months its a little confused on what is going on. I started the change about a year ago, hormones out of wack and night sweats, but I stayed regular up till about 3 months ago. Now its all messed up, I spot, start, stop, start again and this goes one for about a week and a half. I am hoping to follow in my Mom's shoes and be done by 40.

Well I better get going and I will pop in later before I head to the dentist.

rockinrobin 04-04-2007 08:52 AM

Good morning everyone. I hope you are all well. I haven't been on line too much lately. Kids are all home from school and I have a nasty chest cold/cough/congestion/stuffy nose/headache thingy going on.

Monday's calories - about 1300
Tuesday's calories - about 1400

Have a great day ladies. And gent.

Justme33 04-04-2007 08:52 AM

FIBER ONE!!!! FIBER ONE!!!! FIBER ONE!!!! :carrot: OK so I finally got some yesterday....came home ate a serving between breakfast and lunch (just munched on it, YUMMY!!) Had another serving at my bad munchy time of 2pm ish, and then another right before 7pm.....(I ate other stuff too!!) It actually really did help me feel full for awhile!! I was low on calories yesterday because I just wasn't hungry...Calories total 1100!!

GrammyL: My TOM has been a bit wacky lately and I was told this is NORMAL and I'm getting old!! (I'm only 33!!) i USED TO be like clockwork, now it comes a bit early then normal some months, just craziness!!!

littlered: For the last month my weight has been bouncing back and forth between 168 and 172 I weigh daily, sometimes more...morning and night weight..I actually like seeing the fluctuation throughout the day...and the water % on the scale...I dont freak out if I see one afternoon I "gained" 4 lbs by the afternoon...I know this is just normal....Anyways, last month its been 168-172 in the morning weighin...Yesterday it was 167!! I think I may have broke it I haven't seen the scale hit over 170.5 for a couple days (even in the afternoon)....I'll be VERY happy when I never see anything in the 170's again!! Just keep chugging on I guess....

My mom went up to NJ to take care of her mom, she'll be back in about 2 weeks...making her gone for about 2 months...NOT only do I miss her and my kids miss her...I'm curious to see if she sees a big change in my weight since she left......LOL You know how when you dont see someone for so long, you notice it...but people who see me everyday the change is gradual!! we both decided when she got back we'd go spring/summer clothes shopping together...So I'd like to get down to at least 160ish before we go (3 weeks ish)

floridarusty 04-04-2007 10:06 AM

1630 cal. yesterday and that included 2 drinks!!
880 deficit

I did walk my mile and an extra 15 minutes with the dog but he has to hike his leg on every tree!!! lol

Good Morning!

Yesterday's calories... 1,224
Fiber... 51 grams
My menu was pretty much the same except for supper. DH wanted Chocolate Chip pancakes and sausage. I made them with Bisquick lite mix, only made enough for him. I didn't want to waste my calories on chocolate chips so I made myself 3 slices of cinnamon french toast and only ate 1/2 of a sausage patty. I couldn't force myself to eat the whole thing, (140 calories) besides that, it was greasy even after I patted the fat off it. Yuk!
CoolMom... Fitday's progress graph is motivating to look at but the predicted day you'll make your goal isn't reliable. Everyone loses fast to begin with and the bar's predicted goal date goes according to that. I should have made my goal long before I actually did if I went by their chart.
Quote:

I thought the bar graph was a little hard to use for specifics.

Susan... I went back to see why March's calorie averages were so low. I didn't know they did this, but they cleared out all the past months records????. I clicked in March 1 - March 31 and they only listed them starting March 8th. (3-1 thru 3-7 gone)Then I had a whole week of watching what I ate for my colonoscopy and 42 hours of no food. I averaged the days that I ate normally and it was around 1100, still too far under 1200 so this is a wake up call for me. I'm so glad you mentioned yours, or I wouldn't have paid much attention, Thanks!

Allison... I did the 10X weight and it works for me. I should be eating 1300 calories to maintain at 130 pounds and less for losing. I set my calories at 1200 and that's how I lost my weight. My age and activity level has a lot to do with it, those of you that set your calories higher are much more active than I and need that much.

You really went out on a limb eating that much on the first day, did you lose weight this morning? It's very important that you drink at least 8 glass of water with that much fiber.

Here's the recipe I put together for the Coconut Meringue Bites.
4 Egg whites
1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract (I left this out and put in coconut extract instead)
2/3 cup Splenda (bulky kind) Use regular sugar if you don't use splenda.
The original recipe didn't call for coconut so I didn't know how much to put in.
One ounce of unsweetened coconut has 187 calories so I only put in 1/4 of that. I was afraid the beaten peaks would dissolve after folding in the coconut but it didn't, so next time I'll add more coconut. The calories would still be next to nothing if you added the whole 1 oz. of coconut.
***Preheat oven to 250 and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
***Beat egg whites, cream of tartar, and extract at high speed until foamy.
***Add Splenda, 1 tablespoon at a time, beating until stiff peaks form.
***Spoon heaping Tablespoons onto baking sheets.
***Bake 1 hour and 15 minutes; turn oven off and leave overnight in oven. If they begin to brown, reduce oven temps to 225. (Mine only took about 1 hour to bake and I didn't leave them over night in oven, I saw no reason to?)
***Store in air-tight container

Bobbolink: I must get a lot of fiber normally through fruits, veggies, oatmeal and beans (others) because it didn't make me run for the bathroom.....LOL ALL was good!! After my third serving I was like....ohhhh maybe I shouldn't have....but all is good!! :carrot:

delarimi 04-04-2007 01:02 PM

I have been bad about coming on regularly. I asked about the wheat bran a while back.. wondered if you got that in a health food store or just what it was. I don't know what it is about me not being able to stick to anything.. perhaps it has something to do with high stress job and watching my Alheimer's mom!!!! but I really want to commit to this and making the blueberry muffins is a start.. thanks

I went 150 kcal over yesterday because "dinner" was two hot dogs at the ballpark. :o Still, I avoided all the other crap there and I'd budgeted one of them ahead of time. Here's to a stricter today!

lovemyboy 04-04-2007 08:13 PM

1689 calories today. They had cinnamon buns at work today too. I resisted. :carrot:

I too bought some fiber one but haven't tried it yet.

CoolMom75 04-04-2007 10:40 PM

I'm doing good and feeling great! I'm well over that hump of getting started, and now its just a matter of letting time do its thing.

about 1600 cals today.

Anyone else imagine themselves smaller than they really are? I still think of myself as a thin person, and its really shocking to see myself in the mirrored closet doors in my bedroom. LOL

I got my walk in again today at lunch. :carrot: If I walk again tomorrow I'll have walked 6 miles this week! We're driving "home" for Easter on Friday, so I doubt I'll get any exercise while in the car. I may try to get a walk in while we are there though.

Time for bed. Goodnight everyone!

rockinrobin 04-05-2007 07:42 AM

good morning folks!!!

Way to go on resisting one of my favorite foods lovemyboy - cinnamon buns - yummmm. I hope you like the Fiber One as much as I do. Who needs stupid cinnamon buns anyway. ;)

Coolmom, it sounds like you're really getting into the swing of things. Good for you.

Jamn, it sounds like you held your own at the ball park. It could have been A LOT worse.

Justme, I'm always glad to hear about another Fiber One convert.

zenor, exercising in the car, hmmm? I have a real strange image of that in my head now.

Anyway, I had a low day yesterday, - about 1000 calories. I have no doubt that I will make up for it as the week progresses, actually I had a couple of higher days the past few, so it's all good.

Have a great day everyone, healthy, safe and productive.

Went to Curves and tried to walk,
Got 9/10 of a mile, when the treadmill stopped me dead in my tracks. I almost hit my nose on the front. :) my treadmill over heats when I go to fast. guess I need to keep my speed more steady. I Like to go fast as I warm up. We cleaned the motor last night. Hope it does better today.

Nope can't walk outside!
Our temps went from almost 70's on monday, to 20's today. lots of strong winds and SNOW. That IS a four letter word for me today. YUK!

Bobbolink 04-05-2007 09:15 AM

Good Morning!
Yesterday's menu was same-o, same-o. I did purchase some Newman's Light Balsamic Vinaigrette, I forget who said it was good. I noticed a bottle of Newman's Low Fat Sesame Ginger on the shelf next to it and had visions of Chicken Salad, which I made last night. I kid you not, DH said 3 times that it was the best chicken salad he'd ever eaten. That Ginger dressing is awesome! I usually make scratch dressings, when this is gone I'm going to find a recipe for it, yum! I easily made my 1200 calorie goal because I had 7.75 oz. of chicken breast in my salad.
Calories... 1,218 Fiber... 38 grams (much lower than my usual but I only had F.One once yesterday)

Delarimi... I can sympathize with you about your mom, mine also had Alheimers, she had it over 10 years. I sure hope they can find a cure for it, what a tragedy to lose all those years of wonderful memories of family life.
I purchased my wheat bran a our local food co-op, but I think you can find it at any grocery store.

I have the house to myself again today, DH is taking his mom to Rochester clinic again for more tests. He took my car since it's easier on gas and left his big 4-wheel drive pick-up. I hate driving that monster, hope I don't have any emergencies.

GrammyL 04-05-2007 11:43 AM

Bobbi ~ It sounds like the Newman dressing is fantastic. My two questions are, does it have that funky light dressing taste and is it unexpectantly sweet?
I have found that a lot of dressing that are light have a funky taste to them and often are a little sweet, even the ranches. The chicken sounds really, really good.

Its not bad.
and I don't feel guilty using it.
If you don't like the flavor of a diet dressing, I don't think its worth using it.
One needs to enjoy their food somewhat!

Dressing is one thing I don't buy fat free. YUK! Then I don't want to eat my salads.

Justme33 04-05-2007 01:02 PM

All this talk about newman's dressing...my calories for yesterday is 120 more than planned because I stole the kids newman's tops and bottoms cookies (like oreos without the cream) 6 cookies for 120 calories..It was yummy though!!

SOOO calories for yesterday 1320ish.....I fear the yummies at the circus on Sat, and I've put off doing up the Easter baskets, because I'll probably eat a little...Not HUNGRY but want the taste....I bought some beautiful strawberries yesterday...My oldest boy and I have plans for munching on them after school together!! They look and smell perfect!!

I agree! I would rather use a very small amount of full fat dressing and enjoy my salad than eat fat free dressings!

I like to make my own dressings most of the time, but I've always had good luck with the Newman's Own dressings. They are good! I don't think I've had the Ginger one that Bobbi mentioned; I think I'll pick some up next time I'm at the store.

Went over by 500 yesterday and it's going to be a struggle to come in on target today. I'm going to a party and I'll have only 300 calories to spare.

zenor77 04-05-2007 02:51 PM

Here is my current favorite salad dressing:

Light Goddess Dressing (I snagged this off of someone's blog~so it is not original to me)

6 ounces lite firm silken tofu (1/2 pkg. of Mori-Nu)
1/4 cup water
1 1/2 tablespoons cider vinegar
2 tablespoons lemon juice
2 teaspoons low-sodium soy sauce
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon sesame oil
1 tablespoon tahini I use 2T~It adds another 9 cals & 1 gram of fat per serving
2 green onions, white parts removed, chopped
1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley, packed I don't always have this on hand~it's okay without it
1 large clove garlic

Put everything in a blender or food processor and blend till smooth.

Makes 10 servings of 2 tbsp. each. Per serving: 19 Calories, 1 g Total Fat, 1 g Protein, 1 g Carbohydrate.

I also make a homemade balsamic vinegar dressing. This is a small amount, but you can multipy the amounts to make more.

1t dijon mustard
1T chopped shallot
1T balsamic vinegar
2T olive oil

Shake in a jar or wisk in a bowl.

I use the nutritional info in fitday for this one. It's under dressings, homemade, oil & vinegar. I usually use 1/2 T and fitday calculates it at 35 cals for a 1/2T.

You can do it Jman! Do you know what kinds of food to expect? Maybe you should look up the calories of things online to get an idea of what would be good for you to eat.

I'm going to an industry (wine industry) open house tonight. It's before dinner, so I may just have a salad when I get home, but I'm going to look up calories on typical appetizers so I'm prepared and have a plan. I'm going to try really hard to only have 1 glass of wine. I'm going to "milk" it as long as possible.

Good luck!

rockinrobin 04-05-2007 03:01 PM

I also don't care for the low cal dressings, they have an after taste. I feel the same way about mayonaise as well.

I either squeeze a fresh lemon over my salad. Or I use a bit of balsamic vinegar. Practically no calories at all. Or I put enough yummy stuff in my salad that it doesn't need any dressing at all. Like grilled chicken. Or avocado. Or plain tuna. Or strawberries and mango.

GrammyL 04-05-2007 03:21 PM

Now I don't feel so bad. I used to always use the diet dressings and started to just skip salads because of that nasty taste. Then I was on a diet that didn't allow even the diet dressings. So then I started eating veggies nacky. Do you know how long that took to get used to? Anyway, it did teach me to appreciate the real taste of veggies without all the ick but I didn't want to do it for the rest of my life. So when I started calorie counting I started using 1 tablespoon on a good size salad and thats I need. Not big globbs like I used to but just a tiny bit to spruce it up. I figured I was the only one using the full version dressing but now I see I am not. Thank you all for sharing.

Rockinrobin ~ I used to do that a lot when I wasn't allowed dressing and it is good. Another thing I used to do is make turkey taco salad and put enough seasoning on the meat that I didn't need dressing.

Another thing I used to do is take a little vinegar and dijon mustard and mix it up and put it over chicken or tuna salads.

I turned a lot of people on to eating tuna with mustard instead of mayo.

I will have to give the Newmans a try. I don't know why but I have a new feddish with salads, honey mustard dressings w/chicken.

Yes, Lara I also make a salad with a chicken breast heavily flavored with taco seasoning. It really is all you need. I do have to admit that the Newmans dressing does sound good, perhaps I will give it a try.

Hey all -- spring break is wreaking a bit of havoc on my calories, but I'm trying. I just finished a one hour very brisk walk with some running mixed in. I will do push ups and sit ups too. It's so hard for me to eat within my calorie range when I go out to eat or have much variance in my schedule. Oh, well.

Bobbi - I'm glad you like the Newman's Own. I think I'm the one who recommended it (I know I have done so several times on 3FC). I can't eat salad with no dressing or just vinegar or lemon juice. I have to have some flavor and fat to it, and like some of you said, I refuse to eat any fat free dressing -- One, they do taste nasty, and Two, they are loaded with HFCS, which I avoid if at all possible. HFCS (high fructose corn syrup) is purported to make you crave sweets more. It is in virtually any fat free product. I'm not saying a little will do you in, but I do try to avoid it.
The Newman's Own "Lighten Up" dressings are NOT fat free. If you haven't tried them and are looking for a very tasty and more healthy option (besides homemade), you really should give them a try. They have wholesome ingredients (if you are trying to 'eat clean') and are quite good on fats and calories. Here are calories for ones I have in pantry for 2 T. serving
Light Balsamic Vinaigrette -- cal 45, fat 4
Low Fat Sesame Ginger -- cal 35, fat 1.5
Light Sun Dried Tomato -- cal 60, fat 4
Honey Mustard (I'm currently out) is really good too, especially as a dip.
Maybe I should have put a soap box warning on here... "Salad dressing rant" LOL ;)

If I have a huge salad as my dinner, I use 2 servings and drizzle a little balsamic vinegar or lemon juice to stretch (I'm talking a huge salad). For a smaller salad, one serving is plenty of dressing for me.

Zenor - your homemade dressings look yummy. For anyone who doesn't have time to do homemade, I do recommend trying Newman's.

Everyone -- keep up the great work this week. I am doing my best not to get any more side tracked than I already have. I just need to say no to eating out!!!!

Bye for now!
Oh! By the way, speaking of high fructose corn syrup... I bought a box of the Fiber One bars without reading ingredients. I love the Fiber One and Fiber One Flakes, but I cannot bring myself to eat the bars -- the ingredients include not only HFCS, but SHELLAC -- anyone know why shellac would be an ingredient in bars? I'm going to look online to see what I can find, but the thought of shellac doesn't appeal to me!!!
