Sugar Substitutes?

  • Can anyone tell me if there are carbs in Splenda or Equal? I use them in my coffee. I use 2 packets per cup of coffee.
  • I believe they each count as 1 carb, I use splenda and that is how my atkins app counts them
  • ok cool...thats what I thought. I use splenda 98% of the time...equal is my back up
  • Dr. Atkins advises using Splenda (Sucralose). Each packet counts as 1 carb, with a limit of 3 packets per day.
  • Thank you JerseyGyrl....then I'm doing good...I only have 1 cup of coffee with 2 splendas and half-n-half
  • I am REALLY allergic to Splenda, I was recommended to use Stevia (which is healthier), does anyone know the carb count on Stevia?

Where do you get carb counts on things?

Stevia is said to be 0 carbs per packet.

I have a Dr. Atkins Carb Counter book. You can find lots of carb counters online, such as

  • To be 100% honest, I only use coconut sugar, raw agave nectar, dates, erythritol, and yacon syrup as an alternative sweetener. Artificial sweeteners have consistently been proven to be terrible for you—not to mention that they're carcinogenic. Just because something has 0 calories, doesn't mean it's not bad for you. That's just my two cents.

Interested to know where you found that artificial sweeteners are "terrible" and "carcinogenic". Wow that's a blanket statement. Most of the experts I've read don't seem to agree so I'm eager to hear your evidence
  • I can tell you from experience that Malitol even in small doses can and will turn your GI upside down resulting in horrible flatulence and diarrhea... AFTER WORDS I googled it and it seems I am not the only one lol
  • I just bought a case of sweetener packs from Costco each packet says less than one carb. Stevia by Pure Via. I am concerned that one of the ingredients is dextrose as the filler with the stevia. Will this be okay?
  • Dextrose is sugar...personally, I would avoid it.
  • I've been buying liquid splenda at Walmart. I don't think it has any carbs?

Me too, I'm so allergic and it makes me way hungrier as it seems to drop my blood sugar. I get breakouts on my face and head - it's awful. I use stevia and xylitol (it has carbs though).
  • Interesting info on Stevia:
