Atkins Thought of the Day

  • Spent some time with Dr. Atkins this weekend...approximately 40 pages...re-reading and I thought I'd try to post something every once in a while to remind me why this works!! Everyone is welcome to join in and post!!

To paraphrase (excerpt)Atkins: The 4 principles of the Atkins Nutritional Approach ...starts on page 8 DANDR
    1. You will lose weight.
    2. You will maintain your weight loss.
    3. You will achieve good health.
    4. You will lay the permanent groundwork for disease prevention.

Best wishes for an on-plan day!!
  • Page 43 DANDR: "You may have picked up this book with the secret inner conviction that you're a "compulsive eater." In all probability, you're a carbohydrate addict."

I am a carbohydrate addict and I've know that since 2003 when I started Atkins for the first time. Best wishes for an on-plan day!!
  • Thanks Lulu - I also need to pick up the book for a refresher
  • To paraphrase Atkins: with this approach you will never be hungry!

True confession: I am never hungry on Atkins and I'm never hungry when I'm not on Atkins but that doesn't stop me from "craving" and "caving"! I am a carb addict and sometimes feel compelled to eat! Sometimes broth or tea help fill the gap to ease the compulsion! Sometimes I fill the gap by another behavior like weighing multiple times a day....not good (for me)! Sometimes I take a walk which helps me to refocus!! Best wishes for an on-plan day!!
  • Page 56 DANDR : "Once you've been heavy for some time, you're in a metabolic trap, a sort of high-walled box created in large part by high insulin levels. You may already have noticed that you're trapped. Certainly, trying diet after diet and failing on all of them is depressing. I know from personal experience and from the comments of thousands of patients just how tightly the lid of metabolic obesity seems to press down. Fortunately, there is a key to unlatch this box. A perfectly natural bodily process called lipolysis can lift up the lid and let Hope shine in."

When you follow the plan, Atkins works! (Better than any diet I have tried in my life because it is more than a diet - it is a change of habits and way of eating) Best wishes for an on-plan day!!
  • Today a recipe: Page 480 DANDR

    Asian Cucumber Salad
1 English cucumber (peeled and sliced)
    3 green onions thinly sliced
    1 tablespoon rice wine vinegar
    2 teaspoons soy sauce
    1 teaspoon sesame oil
    1/4 packet sugar substitute

Mix all ingredients in a large bowl

    4 servings/ 2.5 digestible carbs

I also saw a cucumber/ tomato salad in my deli this week. It looked like cucumbers/tomatoes/ green onions/ Italian dressing...I think it it would also be a super easy variation to make to accompany BBQ meats!! Yum!!
  • From DANDR (1992) Page 91 -

"What's the first thing you Notice? "
    "You're NOT hungry.
Indeed, how could you be? Ketosis, just like a fast, always induces appetite supression once the body's two-day supply of glycogen is burnt off.
Two days are past. Your glycogen is gone. You're solidly into Ketosis/Lipolysis. At this point, you're finding out that this appetite suppression if the MOST STRIKING THING that has ever happened to your appetite in your life!.
Suddenly you find yourself eating quite moderate quantities of food and feeling no hunger pangs.
You certainly know you're in ketosis, when you find yourself saying: ""You mean lunchtime was an hour ago?"" "

    This is ketosis!
  • Hi - I did some calculations today to see where I have been for the past 30 days.
My average caloric intake is 1526 per day and 81 carbs...that has kept me between 172 and 169. My BMR according to a calculator is 1435 but I know it is probably much lower because my body is more "energy efficient" !! So what's the plan...back to induction levels...I'm glad to have been at this level for quite a while but I need to move on!! My plan is to read it, eat it and live it for a while!! Best wishes for an on-plan day!!
  • Definition of Induction Diet (page 77 DANDR):

This Induction Diet is a corrective diet; it's primary purpose is to correct, as expeditiosly as possible, an unbalanced metabolism. An Imbalance cannot be correced by adding balance; it can only be corrected by counterbalancing with an unbalanced correction.
  • Truly... Eat more good fat! Add butter to your food, Cream Cheese etc... Try to ignore that voice and the genereal public that says eat low fat... Fat is GOOD for us!.. Our Brain loves it, Our skin loves it! We use it for energy. The more good fat you eat (read Atkins book) the less likely you will burn your muscle for energy! So EAT FAT! It is filling (you eat less and thus less calories) and feel full and feel like you are "cheating" as the food tastes so good!
  • Thank you so much for this! I have read the book but it's been awhile. Going to see if the library has a copy today
