Independence from Pounds : A July 4th Challenge!

For our next group challenge / accountability thread, let's focus on the period between Easter & Independence Day (July 4th). That's 10 1/2 weeks.

Add your accountability goals, weight goals, whatever keeps your head in the game.

I'm setting a goal to lose 10 pounds in that period. I'd love for it to be more, of course (don't we all) but looking over my weight loss history, a pound a week is realistic, and will require real focus.

My major commitments :

- weigh in daily (I already do this)
- step count over 10,000 at least 1 day a week
- count calories/carbs at least 2 days a week
- no dairy other than grass fed butter

SW : 189.0
GW : 179.0 (and this will put me out of OBESE & merely "Overweight" per BMI

wannaskipandlaugh 04-21-2014 07:55 AM

Sarah- Count me in.. but I will post my weight on Friday the 25th as that should give me time to get back in gear! I also plan on walking more than 8000 steps a day (some days I get 15000 some days (like yesterday) I did 4500 sigh LOL all evens out tho) Start Friday for Sue!

newme12 04-21-2014 08:23 AM

I'm in!
Commitments:
-Continue journaling
-excercise 3-4 times a week
-drink 64 oz of water a day
Goals:
-lose 17 lbs
-reach onederland!

SW: 216.8
GW: 199.8

calee 04-21-2014 08:58 AM

Honey, I'm home!

SW: 152
GW: 144

Commitments to myself:
Weigh daily
Track my carbs daily
Exercise 30-90 minutes daily
Eat Primal
Not be seduced by other plans that are not low carb

pnkrckpixikat 04-21-2014 10:59 AM

Hey all, I disappeared for Easter weekend, was out of town so I had no scale. I also ate way off plan all weekend... why is it I am pretty much fine until I go out of town blegh oh well. Like Sue I will start Friday with my official SW. I will still post my weight between now and then just because.

Goal: 10 lbs down from Fridays weigh in. Stretch goal is 15, super stretch is 20.

I intend to do cardio 2-3x a week and weight training 2x a week. I have started with a trainer so that should help me get in the strength at the very least.

I NEEEEEEEED NEED NEED to stay on plan. There are no planned trips or anything to derail me until August so I really want to stay on plan until then.

4/21 - 250.6 - flush off fast darn you!

wannaskipandlaugh 04-22-2014 07:29 AM

okay... at least I can log my steps

4/21 DNW - 14411 steps

calee 04-22-2014 08:59 AM

Good morning. Welcome back Pixie. Weight still 152 this morning. Have to get carbs lower. Finished off a large artichoke last nite.

SW: 152
FW: 144

Yesterday. 1152 calories, 49 carb/29 net carbs. I'm ok with net carbs under 30 as Lind as carbs are all from veggies and eggs.

I have a work meeting for next two days. Woman ordering food is a huge carb/sweets junkie. Dinner tonight is appetizers and drinks. I will order myself a grass fed burger if necessary. I committ to eating breakfast at home and keep it LC for lunch and dinner.

I really balked at starting before Thursday but there is always n occasion or reason to think food is more important than my good/improving, health.

Thanks for the support!

pnkrckpixikat 04-22-2014 01:58 PM

WOW Sue that is a lot of steps!!! According to the counter on my phone my highest day is lower than yours yesterday, I feel like a slacker :p to be fair though, it doesn't count when I am on the elliptical since I set it on the machine and watch stuff :)

Calee- you can do it!!!

4/21 - 250.6
4/22 - 247.1

OK Lizzy 04-22-2014 04:33 PM

I'm in as well! My starting weight is 185 -- goal weight for July 4th -- 175. (although I'm secretly hoping for 170)

My biggest (and most difficult) focus right now is to work some exercise into my day. I have become SO sedentary the last several years.

BrendaM 04-22-2014 06:21 PM

Here's to my first (and hopefully not last) challenge:
Considering I re-started Atkins yesterday...my goal is:
Stay on track
Keeping it realistic for a goal of 5 pounds
Drink more water

SW:200 (my heaviest yet! :( )
GW: 195

wannaskipandlaugh 04-23-2014 07:55 AM

Pixikat.... It has taken me over a year to be able to walk this far (and to really enjoy walking and now I have a friend to walk with after work.. it helps even more) I was used to - maybe 8000 steps a day and that had me walking around my house at 10pm trying to get the steps in LOL My cats just watched me as I walked and kept playing hide and go seek with my feet! LOL

OK I bit the bullet... I weighed (OUCH!) and gotta start somewhere and its just a number.. JUST a Number! (Pixikat.. your honesty was a beacon for me!)

Brenda YOU CAN and WILL do it again! I BELIEVE!
OK Lizzy.. you will too! and moving.. just take the 1st step! :)

SW (argh!) 230.6 and Minimum 8000 steps!
4/21 DNW - 14411 steps
4/22 230.6 - 14733 steps
GW 217

pnkrckpixikat 04-23-2014 09:29 AM

Sue- good for you for weighing! you can do like i am doing, report it but still make friday's weigh in your official SW. My average steps per day range from 2000-8000 depending on if I work, have class, or am off both. that doesn't count the elliptical though.

Brenda- welcome! best of luck to you :)

lizzy - you got this!!

4/21 - 250.6
4/22 - 247.1
4/23 - 243.5 (? i think it was .5 at least I was half asleep and running late. I know the 243 part.)

QuilterInVA 04-23-2014 11:20 AM

Hi! I'd like to join you. I do Atkins and am up to 50 net carbs a day.

My goals are to continue exercising at the Y 4 days a week, walking the other 3 days. Drink more water! I drink a lot of tea and coffee but I really need to cut back. Should be easier now that the weather is getting warmer. Try at least 1 new recipe a week so I don't get into a rut with what I'm eating.

SW: 142
GW: 135

Nagazim 04-23-2014 11:02 PM

hi ladies  A goal/challenge thread is what I need.

I've been using this pregnancy as an excuse to not care about what I'm doing. I can't do that anymore. At the rate I'm going, I'll be back to 275 by the time these 10 weeks are up. Baby is due to be evacuated on July 1st so I'll have a decent loss then lol. I'm hoping to be under 245 by then. I'd love closer to 235. I'm trying to be realistic. If I drop my carbs back down, I know I will shed a lot of water water weight so I'm hoping for around a 20 lb loss total by July 1st.

I've got my fitbit flex set to a measly 5000 steps/day and don't hit that most days. I'm just so tired. I think the lower carbs will help with that too.

My first goal is to make it to Saturday without eating anything non-Paleo.
Daily:
#1 stay on plan!
#2 Don't use pregnancy as a crutch.
#3 Drink 130ish oz water daily. (body weight divided by 2)
#4 Check in here daily. I NEEEEEEDDDD this group to help me be accountable.
#5 NO MORE EXCUSES!

wannaskipandlaugh 04-24-2014 07:51 AM

PIXIKAT... WOW look at that loss!!! 7 lbs of water in 3 days! SHAZAM!!!! ohhhhhhh I want to follow in your foot steps!

Quilter! Welcome.. I have seen your posts for a long time and am very glad you have joined us on this journey/challenge! :)

NAGAZIM! Hello honey! I had not seen your posts in the decades thread for awhile and so happy to "see" you there and HERE! So glad you are joining us! We have a truly wonderful group of people here... They have saved me from myself many many times. May this portion of your journey (weight and pregancy) be easier! :) so glad you are here!

me... still have a WHOLE bunch of water to lose from last weekend.. but at least I am back in the 220's barely.. but back.. I have my eyes set on 5/5 as I really want to have my lowest number ever that day! YES I AM!!!!

SW (argh!) 230.6 and Minimum 8000 steps!
4/21 DNW - 14411 steps
4/22 230.6 - 14733 steps

calee 04-24-2014 08:46 AM

Welcome Quilter and congratulations on your upcoming bundle of joy and shed pounds. :)

Nag aim, your numbers are so impressive. I'm glad you're joining us.

I had a tough time with sodium and 2 cookies at the conference the last two days and my weight is higher than its been in several years. I woke up scared. Today is strict Atkins 72 for me. I'm done messing around which I've done for the last month. I injured my ankle during Pilates Reformer last Friday and have barely walked a step. This morning I will walk the 3/4 mile to work and then home tonight.

SW: 152
CW: 153.6
GW: 144.

pnkrckpixikat 04-24-2014 09:48 AM

4/21 - 250.6
4/22 - 247.1
4/23 - 243.5
4/24 - 236.7

I am not sure where this came from... got on the scale 3 times because I didn't believe it. I'll take it, but I wonder if it is so low because I might be dehydrated. I drank alot of water yesterday but I also was dripping sweat after my session with the trainer so idk if it balanced out. I will just wait and see what happens.

Sue - I've noticed my gains from eating carbs flush off super fast once I buckle back down and don't let any little cheats in. I aim for 5% of my intake to be from the net carbs. Myfitnesspal has a code you can use so itll add net carbs as an option and show you what percentage you are getting from where. instructions can be found here: http://cavemanketo.com/configuring-mfp/

Quilter! Nagazim! so good to see you both! Good luck :)

newme12 04-24-2014 09:37 PM

Haha OK Lizzy we will keep your secret! Good luck with the excercising!
Welcome Nagazim, QuilterinVA and BrendaM. Glad to have you all join us! Congrats on the baby Nagazim. Quilter your weight loss is amazing!!
Pixie those extra lbs are really coming off!
Sorry about your ankle Calee. Hope it is better!
Sue I think you will make that May 5th goal!!

My scales were being really stupid today and weighing all over the place. I saw weights from 213.8 (which I didn't believe so I wayed a "100" more times) to 215.2 (only once) so finally just went with 214.4 which showed up several times. So aggravating!

Can I join? Getting back on the wagon....

My goals:

1) Exercise 5 days a week
2) Go back to my weight lifting class.
3) Drink more water
4) Be able to run a half marathon distance again!!!!!! My goal is to run it on 7/1.

I soooo need to be here!

Nagazim 04-24-2014 11:38 PM

Sue - I need your steps lol! I seriously barely hit 5k right now.

Calee- good luck with the ankle healing.

Pixikat- holy weight loss, Batman! Those lbs are melting off! Way to go!

newme- I usually weigh 100 times just to make sure I get the same number every time. You never know, I could weigh less the next time lol!

free1 - welcome aboard! Good luck with your goals!

AFM: the water shed has begun. I went from 254 yesterday to 250.4 today. I'm hoping for an even bigger drop tomorrow morning. I've been 100% on plan today and moved my butt a lot more than I have been. It's been a good day :)

Start: 254
Current: 250.4
Goal: 235

pnkrckpixikat 04-25-2014 08:30 AM

4/21 - 250.6
4/22 - 247.1
4/23 - 243.5
4/24 - 236.7
4/25 - 242.4 -

so i first weighed in at 235.6 and said not possible so I reset the scale and lo and behold 242.4 which means it has likely been misreading me the past couple days. I knew it was too good to be true lol

Nagazim 04-25-2014 12:41 PM

Pixikat - Sorry your scale was mean. At least now you know where you really are.

Start: 254
Current: 248.8
Goal: 235

I'm chugging water like a champ and it's really helping me shed the fluid.

It's nice to see so many new faces here!

Who would want to join me for a one-week hyperfocus week (induction levels or whatever "back to basics" approach you prefer)?

I'm tired of these long stalls, and I know the first step is usually back to basics.

I was thinking we'd each post our menus for the day, any exercise, carb counts, etc?

I was thinking to start on Monday

Sarah, I started back to basics on Thursday after my conference when I saw 153.6 and scared myself silly. During the Easter challenge I didn't lose an ounce, except the up and down ones, so I thought I'd best go back to induction levels and track everything.

I'm not really able to exercise right now because of my hurt ankle, but my general routine is 30-90 minutes 6-7 days a week.

I would join you on menus on Monday.

Anyone else?

wannaskipandlaugh 04-26-2014 10:20 AM

Nagazim.. Wow.. you really did shed alot of water! :) How is the pregnancy coming? :) Do you know if a boy or girl? is the baby kicking like crazy? :)

Sarah... I will start with you as I have started basic induction again (tho less veggies for me) and will post menu's and steps (exercise miles only). but I don't always know calories....

Good Morning, yes it is. I had a fantastic WHOOOOSH last night. Back in the 140's. Yippee! So being hyper focused on carbs really helps me. I'm back, finally, to my March weights. Trying Perfect Health Diet really wasn't good for my body. I can fool myself about carbs + me, but then I have to wake up and face the reality.

Welcome to everyone new! Great to have more energy joining in to help us stay motivated. I see a few races in the making here!

calee 04-27-2014 10:19 AM

Easily, that's a very impressive loss of water weight. Mine generally takes weeks. It took me 4 days to drop 2 cookies carb weight this week.

It's goin to be fun watching you and Sue battle for the teens.

Speaking of which, SUE!!!! You're halfway to the teens!!!! You're having a great week. It can't all be water weight because isn't this a new low for you?

Pixikat... are you holding onto that water bottle when you are on that scale? Shed that liquid! :) that is all it is! :)

Hello Calee and WOOHOO to getting back to that 140's :D HOORAY! and me.. actually 225.4 was my lowest about 8 days ago and I have finally gotten back here! But I am so psyched about doing induction again (just got back from shopping) so that I can race Easily to the 2 teens! :)

Easily... I still just count carbs as counting calories would drive me nuts. I try to walk enough to work off at least 500 calories of extra exercise (soon to start ZUUUUUUMBA! WooHoo). Carbs are my triggers and it looks like I will need to stay under 40 to maintain (average weekly) and under 25 to lose... which is AOK at my age (56 next week).. and my brain thanks me every day (and I thank God!). Maybe when I get to 170 or so.. I might have to get drastic and count calories.. or just cut down to 2 meals a day instead... Will think about that when I lose 50 more lbs! :)

Gorgeous day here in Southeast Florida! I hope noone has any extreme weather anywhere near you!

Nice whoosh there! Glad to see you getting some momentum and movement again on the scale.

Yeah, I am really skeptical of the paleo people who push starch so vehemently, and Jaminet (and a few others) have come off in interviews I've heard as basically thinking low carbers are stupid and not understanding their theory.

I fully accept that a "normal" human body can process starches well and responds well to them, but a lot of us end up at low carb because our bodies aren't so normal in that respect...

I've seen very few middle aged, obese or formerly obese women do well with the starch added back after they've succeeded with low carb. So I read and listen and try to learn, but hold myself back from trying carb nite and adding "safe starches" and all that. Right now, if it ain't broke, don't fix it...

Checking in on this, one week in :

My major commitments :

- weigh in daily (I already do this)
- step count over 10,000 at least 1 day a week
- count calories/carbs at least 2 days a week
- no dairy other than grass fed butter

SW : 189.0

188.2 Apr 23
188.4 Apr 24
186.8 Apr 25
186.2 Apr 26
185.4 Apr 27 (lowest weight since my wedding in 2007)
185.8 Apr 28

Steps were above 8,000 (my daily target) on Tuesday, Wednesday & Friday, and over 10k on Friday

I did not count carbs/calories this week, I'd been doing it daily until Easter & was just really burned out, but I'll do it this week for the whole week of the Induction Challenge

I put that dairy rule in place to keep me dairy free for a few months longer, since I keep fantasizing about cheese and cream! They will need to wait until the end of July though, because if I reintroduce them I'd do so first with the high-quality stuff (grass fed, raw blah blah) and that is easy to get here in France and hard to get in the States, and I'll be in the States for most of July with my kids.

calee 04-28-2014 09:08 AM

Good Morning!

I'm not a step counter anymore. My daily is to walk to work and back. It's about 3/4 mile each way. I generally take Pilates Reformer 4-5x a week. On days I ont take a class, I get in an additional 5k walk around the lake in front of my house. On weekends I'll go up in the woods to get i n some hill climbing. My routine has worked well for me without getting my panties in a knot over number. I pay a set price monthly at the studio so I'm very faithful to my commitment. The more I go, the cheaper the classes. Single classes are $35.

No calorie, carbs I'm fanatical about and have been for decades.

Let's rock off those pounds this week. I still can't exercise because of ankle but now at least I can walk t o work again. So no real exercise advantage. Calories will have to stay low. No extras.

Pixie, intense school load and you're dropping weight. Bravo!

Sarah, you're being beautifully consistent.

Talking to my weight watchers leader after meeting last night. I realized that I got traumatized by someone at work on February 21st. My eating was tough and I didn't shed any weight in the Easter challenge. The issue finally was resolved last Wednesday and Thursday I got hyper focused and am ready to be back in the game. I had not made the correlation until I told him about the situation last night. I'm back in focus after being on a weight plateau. Amazing the mind/body correlation.

Sarah, I hope your little one is better.
