Wow, Jason....only 9 lbs. to go! That's fantastic!

So- if you see something as above for the popcorn, is it ok? Anyone know?

I'll have to look up the carb count and the glycemic index of popcorn but I would tend to think that it would certainly be okay for maintenance. It has a really high fiber count, I'm sure...however, corn is a no-no. But I did eat corn when I was on maintenance last time, with no problem (meaning, it didn't cause me to gain anything back). In fact, I had no problem with any veggies on maintenance, though I stayed away from potatoes.

Almonds and macadamia nuts are 2 of the lowest-carb nuts and can be added in as an OWL rung. Almonds was the ONLY thing I added back in...otherwise have stayed on strict induction to get to goal. Jason's almonds were fine...it was the chocolate they were coated with that would have been the problem.

But I'm gonna look into just how damaging the popcorn is. Due to the high-fiber, it seems like it would be so harmless and fairly healthy...but I'd have to check to see if it can be added in to any of the OWL rungs.

I'm sure Kim knows....maybe she'll get here and tell us before I get a chance to look it up.

I personally would not add popcorn during OWL...IF I were going to eat it, I'd hold off till well into maintainance and might have it on rare occasions...but, that's just me.
3.5 cups of air-popped popcorn is 21.8 total carbs or 17.6 net carbs....2.6 cups of oil-popped is 16 total carbs or 13.2 net carbs

Thanks, Kim

Hmm....so approx. a little under 6 Gm. net carbs in about a cup. But who the heck only eats one cup of popcorn anyway?

That 17+ for the 3.5 cups would be way too high until maintenance...and only occasionally at that, even then. I totally agree.

It's a shame....popcorn seems so harmless, doesn't it?

I cheated too, my mum died last wednesday night, and by Saturday, I went off the rails and had an ice cream cone and some chips, and later a couple of chocolates, and also over ate on some snacks, (cheese and olives and nuts).
Sunday went back to strict induction, and today as well, but am craving like crazy, so it will be hard for a bit. I have an all day meeting Wednesday, going for a breakfast meeting first and choose a place with lots of egg dishes so will have a yummy omelet. and will have to pack for the rest.
THe lunches they serve at these are good for salads, but not for other carbs, so will bring myown.
Not taking any chances.

Hi all,

SaskNewfie, don't be hard on yourself! We are only human afterall..

Deena, wow, you brought back memories of the drive-in movies to a "t"! When I was a kid all the kids in my family and neighborhood would pack ourselves in my Dad's station wagon and go to the drive-in (we also brought our own snacks) and sit on the roof of the wagon, etc. And when I was a teenager I never saw the movie either! It was smooching time then... Today drive-in's don't exist.. what a shame.

Fatmad, I am so very sorry about your Mom. On April 8 it will be 1 year that I lost by baby brother to melanoma cancer, he was only 49. I still can't believe he is gone.. I still cry over that..

Well, one day at a time, right?

Hang in there everyone,
Toby

Hi fatmad, I am sorry for your loss. You really are brave and determined to be sticking with this through all that.

Also Toby, sorry about your brother.

thanks everyone for your condolences. I want to be careful to stick to plan even with my grief. In reality, **** is just going to happen to each of us periodically, and I need to eat right even then or I will always have an excuse to eat poorly and stay fat. Last year I was really stressed when my father got sick and we almost lost him, he was in ICU for 2 months, and my mother was going downhill at the time, and I gave up my weightloss efforts and stopped exercising, and look where that got me, fatter than ever and pre-diabetic.!
So learning to cope with stress without comfort food is going to be essential in my recovery, I mean my weight loss.

fatmad - I can relate. I lost my sister 14 months ago to cancer - she was my best friend. Emotional eating sunk me too. She made me promise to take care of myself and I am finally ready to do that!

so sorry fatmad and fatbgone.....losing a loved one is never easy.

Jason...I'm glad to see you are hanging in there! I had movie popcorn and stayed in ketosis...I just didn't allow myself any other carbs that day. Looks like your body is loving Atkins! keep up the good work!

Condolences to everyone here who lost family members. I lost my youngest son (was 17) five years ago.....but I couldn't eat at all and would vomit every time I even tried to eat. All this food went to waste...as I guess it's a tradition that people bring you all this prepared food. I think I dropped about 10 lbs. in a week......but shortly thereafter was put on medication that caused so much weight gain.....and is why I had to do Atkins Induction again after having maintained for 12 years since the last time I'd done it to lose the weight from my pregnancies.

Toby, do you remember back then when they would have those little refreshments walking and dancing across the screen at the drive-in? Like a hotdog, a container of popcorn, a soda....all with faces and marching across the screen and/or dancing, etc.....to tempt you to "go to the snack bar"? What was great too was that you always saw more than one movie...it was usually a double or a triple-feature.

Hi Deena,

I read before that you lost your 17 year son, how devastating.. My heart goes out to you. I never had children (tried but it wasn't in the cards for me) so I can't even imagine what you must be feeling. I know my Mom is going through a difficult time as that was her baby.. He was truly an angel of a person..

And to everyone else, my condolences.. When I lost my Dad I cried everyday for 3 months, yes, we were that close. That's when I went off Atkins.. I lost more weight back then as I wasn't facing menopause plus the metabolism problems back then. At least I am not gaining weight.

Anyway, yes, I do remember those refreshments dancing across the screen and I remember caving in sometimes and begging my Dad to get me a hot dog! My Mom didn't go with us to the drive-in but she made the popcorn (which got cold) and all kinds of goodies for us to take with us. We brought lounge chairs, pillows, we had so much fun! My Dad loved the drive-in so much that we even went in the winter time (if they were open) and sat in the car with the heat on!

And of course when I became older that was a cool place to go when I was dating in my teenage years!

Did you ever see the movie "The Cider House Rules" and McGuire went to a drive-in for the first time? That was a great movie, not my all time favorite but a very good one..
